Thread: Is Ranger worth it?

The only thing to say about it Rizzaka is... give it a try, if you're lucky or it's just your style you hear "the call" like some would name it and just get addicted to this profession. Think you can't choose Ranger to become powerful or rich or on a most rewards per skillpoints base right now, cause to be honest most of the skills arn't worth the investment.
I think our greatest bonus is atm that nearly every Ranger you meet is dedicated to this profession and this is reflected in the ingame and the forum behaviour of most of em and we have a great correspondant in Nraas, who's just doing a great job.

As to the weapon atm I'm using the nice Ranger/Rifle combo guess in combination with a bothanian race you can't choose better even the Terrain Negotiation bonus can be useful as Rifleman (just love to crawl camoed and covered between some nasty enemies and using concealshot to get everything down without ever being noticed) and it's very Hunter/Ranger like.

Carbineer knockdown is broken atm, but in a good way. It kds 100%, even when it fails! And it has a funny animation... reminds me of rescue, except you are running right at the animal. I hunt with a carbineer a lot and she's a riot.

The only bad spot about Carbineer is that you really do need some medic skills. Those HAM costs! Ouch!

Ranger is more religeon then "template" to quite a few of us here. Sadly, we probably cannot justify this profession with a direct question like that. A better question would be "Would I like being a Ranger". You would, as an adventurer type. Not in the strictest sense as a power gamer type. That is the short answer.

Pros are some increased movement, tracking, camps (soon to be nerfed) and camo (has been or soon to be nerfed). Cons are 120 skillpoints (if you master it) not helping you in battle and to get master you need good combat skills. You will have to choose how you level the combat side carefully, there are some combinations that are non-viable at low to mid level. There is a thing called High Tech Field Base that will be the envy of your friends and has 2 public crafting stations (for now) and heals the same rate as sitting in a city hospital. The additional traps you get are AoE traps but none root or otherwist hamper movement so any ranged ranger would not like them, but a melee ranger would draw the whole pack to him (potentially). Area track is nice in a pinch and can guide you to already spawned mobs but the server can "add" things on the fly so you have to be mindful of that.

Best things out of the mix is you can make a good living selling harvest with a supporting caste of hunters with you. You might also want to look into Antarian Rangers on your server if you choose Reb or Imperial Sector Rangers if you are an Imp (there might be a Dark Rangers PA out there too, I have not heard of that name yet tho). As for AR on Eclipse, we hunt **edit** near every night someplace ( where ever the "good stuff" is ). Many novice like us because they tend to level 2 to 4 boxes each night

Ranger is not a profession. It's a lifestyle.

After Fencing i was thinking either Carbaneer or Pikeman

I highly recommend you avoid Pikeman, at least for a while. Like I said, I'm a Ranger/Pikeman and I find my character almost impossible to play (so I've been focusing on an alt on another server until there are some changes to P. and R. professions). Totally go Carbineer, that sounds like a blast. Save Pikeman for later, after the big Combat Pass.

If you don't trust me, go read the Pikeman forums.

i just expect to help out friends that pay way too much for resources.

You will totally do that as a Ranger. And who knows? We're all working our tail ends off to improve the profession, by the time you've mastered it, the Devsmight have improved the profession lots.

Hi all, i'm only a scout 4-2-4-2 at present. I took up scout to become a bounty hunter, but i found that i really enjoyed being a scout. I'm sad i know, but i get such a buzzzzz when i sell some of my hides, meat and bone on the bazzar. So now BH bah! no way, RANGER all the way man. If you like exploring and hunting then ranger is for you. Like all professions in the game they have thier bugs, so you just have to put up with it. Hope the dev's will sort them out soon though. So far i have not gone down the path with the holos, maybe one day but not yet. I'm also doing ranger because i want to, not for a holo. This forum, and this thread has been a great help for me for when i become a ranger. Thanks to all of you. And is ranger worth it, can not say at present as i am not one yet. But if you can enjoy what it has to offer, and not just grinding for a holo, then yes it must be. Looking foreward to when i become a ranger. Also i just got a job selling all the herb meat i can get to a group that make top of the range stims, wound packs etc. Don't you just love this game.

Don't forget that with the chef revamp you willbe able to consume food that will give you (from master scout) the equivalent of 3 boxes of ranger hunting now, maybe even more when bio additives and primo materials are used.

So pop one immediately before you start harvesting during a Big-Game hunt. As with all things, it's a matter of timing.

As for the original question about harvesting...it is definitely worth it when you are group hunting bigger kills or can solo big creatures yourself. I don't understand where some of you get your numbers on harvesting. I am a master ranger and I was hunting with a master scout the other day, we were simply hunting forms of kaadu for avian meat. I was pulling 19 pieces off of the kaadu males and my friend was only harvesting 13. That's about 35 percent less than me with him being a master scout.

I was recently out hunting with another friend who is a novice ranger and we were hunting huurton matrons. I was pulling 98 pieces of meat, he was harvesting about 55. That's almost 45 percent lower than me.

Harvesting is based on percentages that are based on your harvesting skill bonuses. The bigger the animal, the more of a gap you're going to see in harvesting between the masters and the novices.

Well, it will last for 20min with no bio additives. That's good for a couple of lairs. Also, this food item is very low down in the chef tree and doesn't require a lot of materials to make, so should be very inexpensive.
