Thread: we do NOT want carbines
There are many arguments in this thread for ranger to be an elite profession, and the same goes for it being a hybrid profession. Personally I lean more towards the elite profession argument.
currently ranger is a stand alone elite profession. Many of us who have argued for change over the years wanted to see ranger stay an elite profession that allowed the player the choice to be a ranged ranger or a melee ranger. We have come to respect that this is the one profession which ranged and melee player alike can play and even have fun with.
I've read every augment posted here, and even posted my opinions here as well. Many have a passionate reasons forfeeling the way they do about the changes, be them for or against.I have one question that I have yet to see anyone answer.
Why can'tranger be one profession in this game which has a combat aspect to it (demolitions)but does not favor, nor require, a ranged or melee skill?

Carbines, rifles or pistols dont suit ranger at all simply because whatever the weapon they have no impact what so ever on our ranger skills. Thats why we shouldnt be weapons specific and rather RS4 andTrappingExploration 4.
Hit that one right on the head. (edited for fixing)

As things are, the devs want to push/gate us into being Carbine users, but they aren't going to give us any special skills to use with a Carbine.
Inevitably I'll draw a comparisson to Bounty Hunters; they have a line for each type of ranged weapon. Each line has several corresponding specials. That makes sense, but what's being suggested for Ranger doesn't make sense.
FWIW, my personal choice for prerequisits is:
Ranged Support 4 + Hunting 4.
Despite that I hugely enjoyed the lone creature hunter role, I like what has been done with the Ranger revamp, although I'd like hunting viability to be retained somewhat in the New Ranger. So I think taking the Hunting line from Scout is a step in the right direction for doing that (I'm assuming all the harvesting skill mods will be in the hunting line of scout). Next on the agenda will be making New Ranger traps work on creatures!

I can't understand the Carbines requisite at all. As far as I'm concerned, it makes us worse off. This apart, I think this revamp should be warmly welcomed. All for it and have said as much across the way on the main in development thread but surely this issue of what weapons we use is entirely up to us and shouldn't be a pre-req at all.
If it stays, I'm a Master Rifle at present so I can just about live with it (but wouldn't be happy) but if I was one of the Melee guys, I'd be seriously hopping at the moment. Ridiculous idea. Can someone explain to me where it came from?
Scout Traps and Ranger traps are two comepletely different things now and considering the fact that you'll most likely need the Scout trapping mods from Master Scout to trap CL 80 creatures, it's not an option in a Ranger template, now that Rangers are geared towards NPC/PC combat.
Hunting is completely out, now that Ranger is in no way shape or form connected to tracking, hunting or harvesting creatures.
Trying to hold on to old values will only "gimp" us in our new role.
I'm not too fond of the changes myself, that's why I'll use the extra SP to get my FS slot and start a Master Scout, to continue my "Ranger" playstyle in SWG.
NO CARBINES. That will just mess me up and I will have to give it all up.
Even as a hybrid its still likely to be possible to do master ranger and master scout and some other combat to be an effective hunter, it all depends on what you want to do with your ranger.

Exploration is the only pre-req from Scout that's suited for Ranger.
I disagree, exploration does us absolutely no good at all, since we're getting TN from our ranger trees.

They might operate in different ways but the argument is that you are learning about their construction and theory. Its like learning to build a knife before you build a sword, for us the difference is the same linear teaching.

NO no Carbines! i thought we where hunters, who hunts with an Mp5? heh.. unless there trying to turn us into "army rangers"
but whats the point? the GCW is dead anyways cus if all the stinking jedi!!!
Your partiall correct we are being turned into Sector and Antarian Rangers.
Hunting and PvE centricbeing movedto Scout.
Exploration IV and Ranged Support IV are the best choices, however the overlap with BH prevents this from being an option. Maybe Bounty Hunters should be changed to Hunting IV ![]()
Exploration IV and Trapping IV work nicely but prevent us having any justification for Accuracy or Speed mods. And the trapping makes less sense when you consider that Ranger traps will work in a totally different fashion (they will be placed rather than thrown).
Ranged Support IV and Trapping IV fail to explain the Ranger's mobility and stealth.
Any suggestion for a floating prereq is non-viable, SOE has indicated that they won't recode prereqs.
Ranged Weapons vs. Melee Weapons is a 50/50 pick I suppose. No matter whichone you pick, you alienate the other side. However game precidentindicates thathaving Accuracy and Speed modifiersrequiresprereqs in Marksmanor Brawlerdepending upon if those mods are ranged or melee. To have both would require a Marksman and Brawler prereq.
This leaves us with Unarmed, Pikeman, 1-Handed, 2-Handed, Rifles, Carbines and Pistols as options. No matter which one you pick, you annoy the others.
I am currently Rifles/Ranger. I could say they should pick Rifles as the prereq because it benefits me. However, I am capable of being objective and I see that what benefits me is not necessarily the best option nor does it necessarily make the most sense.
Didn't the devs already say that the new Ranger traps will work against creatures?
If so, then why not give us the Hunting tree in scout as a pre-req?
