Pardon me if I'm missing something from the possible commands that exist today, but I'd be happy if the devs would modify the
/areatrack
command so that you could type
/areatrack animals
/areatrack npcs
or
/areatrack pcs
so I wouldn't have to click in that irritating little box!

cammoflage enable in pvp (like dot disapears from radar till atack or be atacked / discovered), Flaregun (iluminates area for all players for X time),
player enabled traps (slowers movement, lower def etc) find a way to make camps usefull again, and this last one is bold but...factional orientated cover ops extra tree (gives faction bonus in GCW, extra skils, dunno something)

-First off, i havent read all in this thread, so i may be repeating something-
Okay, Ranger..Yes..I can track, i can Camo, i can trap, i can build a camp...What more do you want?
First off, make Camo a bit more usefull..Is every PC blessed? Does they have some sort of sixth sense? I want to be able to turn "invisble" to PCs! Even if it just was on the radar, that would be fine!
Now i like to think of Ranger as a combat unit..
We should be Stealth and Infiltration units, capable of much more than just hiding, building a camp, play around with the animals...
I think in SWG the Ranger have been made into a totaly weirdo thats obsessed by creatures!
Ask yourself...Should we be:

A)A division of the armed forces trained in close-combat and raiding tactics.

B)Caretakers of the planetary wild life?

I would like A...If i was B, i would need a hefty pay check!(afterall, SW isnt know for nice fluffy bunnies...No no, its Rancors and krayts!)

A Ranger should be able to survive out in the nature, but why is it that only entertainers that can heal BF? Let us Rangers be able to findd stuff that heals BF/Wounds(all 9)

A Ranger should be able to use the surrondings for more than just a good hiding place! Give us Cover bonuses! Maybe give an all weapon conceal shot?

Give us weapons that apply states on PCs/NPCs! Forexample, grenades that causes stun/dizy, or KD

Maybe give us Aim and a General ranged aiming bonus!

Thats some of it...ya

Okay okay, i admit it, im a newb! But a rare danish newb!

Oh yes, i want bowie knife and a special silent backstab kill(drain all pools totaly and delives a DB..The knife can be thrown for up to 50 meters and returns to the user)...Okay, joke..
But i thougth off, why not give us a bonus with a knife? People can be as heavy armored as they want, but there are always softspots! So if the rangers could get a weapon that could do pretty nasty things vs. PCs/NPCs in CC IF the target was unaware of their present..That would be fun!

Okay okay, i admit it, im a newb! But a rare danish newb!

I've tried to read all the postings and I'm sorry If this has been stated. Also, hopefully its not to late to post this but here it is.

When I hunt with my firends we hunt NPC people - IE: Black Sun Guards. Well as a ranger I can help locate them but my traps are worthless and camo seems to fail on them a little to often.

** Why not have traps work on people and animals - For example an old iron jaw bear trap will stop a person as fast as a bear. Traps such as a trip wire, spikes, etc...

As a Ranger I should be able to sneak up on any position - scout the location of the target (Highlight it - maybe show them to my group on the radar)itcould give the sniper a modifier because Ive ranged the target for them. Then I would setup traps (like trip wires) and come back to the group. Then someone can 'pull' the camp to us through the traps and the fun begins.

Just a thought and I appreciate your time reading this, thank you

Forward recon is a great role id like to fullfill too. Placing down traps, ambushing, intel gathering all should be viable skill avenues to rangers.

Firstly, to make the use of state effects more difficult to obtain make bows arrows knifes and traps craftable by ONLY rangers, you want a poison arrow for creature state effects or a poison dart for NPC state effects, you need to gather or purchase the resources to make it yourself, Wood for bows and arrows, wood and metal for better bows and arrows, metals for the best bows and arrows, and the poisons for the state effects can be made by adding FORAGED items or looted stuff to the craft. Now we finally have a use for forage, and sarlacc bile and other similar materials can be used to tip your darts and arrows, plus particular traps require particular resources (i.e. Tat leathery hide for nets etc.). Also, the Trapgun itself will be a crafted weapon and the best will cost a lot (as the best weapons do) and EVERY shot fired from it will have a HAM (or whatever special attack cost becomes in CU) cost.

Some sidenotes here. I really like the idea, but I think the quality of the weapon (either trapgun, bow) or ammunition (darts, arrows) should relate in an artisan way. So basic bow and arrow are made of wood. Optional you can use a metal compound. The stats of the resources (bit artisan here) defines how well the item will become.

Same as proposed to traps: better resources (read: stats) to experiment on/with might give higher damage, make state last longer and so on (and a use for the HTBF's WDG station again).

Some rangers might not like the artisan bit in here, but it adds a dimension to the ranger profession. I'd like to say as far as making arrows (in quiver, depending on experimentation: 5, 10, 15, 25, 50, 100 or something like it) in general. If you want it poisoned, do state dmg, you might need to see a BE(? or do it yourself with the FC station on HTBF)with your biles, tooth or whatever you find/buy to make you a fluid that you can use during the crafting stage of the arrows.

And I must say, I like it

I have to say I love Ranger the way it is.

But I would really like to see something COOL about Ranger that people would be in awe at- I mean, I think of what "ranger" means to me, and whatever context I think of it in, it is super elite. Not asking for something with combat, but I would like to see a ranger run in and people say "wow" instead of "who's he". PVP especially. I really like something along the lines of trapping players at the Master Level- but don't know if it possible considering the gameplay. /shrug

Well spoken, CuchulainnDarklight. Some very good points I've been also trying to get across to the Devs. Also, very good job to Owen on the proposal. I hope it finds its way to the Devs at some point. Have you had any feedback on it from them other than "Oh, we'll get to Ranger, some time..."?

Rangers are supposed to be survivalists, hunters, recon experts and wildlife specialists. At the moment, we're not. We're better than a Dancer at finding a Womprat, but then I think it's pretty even. The paltry "Creature To Hit" bonus applies only to basic shots, no specials.

Ranger is a hybrid profession. A hybrid of combat and scouting. Therefore it should be treated as a combat profession. We should get specialised weapons, armor and equipment that makes us able to tackle almost anything in nature (maybe not solo a Rancor, but at least be able to TRAP it). In addition, as CuchulainnDarklight states, a Ranger is also able to use their knowledge on people, so traps should work on PCs and NPCs alike, maybe to a lesser degree in some cases. If I should step in a bear trap, it's not going to think "Oh, it's a person, I shouldn't go off", it's going to take my leg off!

The Devs need to go watch First Blood about 15 times so they can see what a Ranger should be able to do.

I am not a ranger, but I have a idea. What if rangers could make maps of a certain area that they explore? Buildings and NPC's would appear on these maps for a certain range depending on the ranger's skill level. The map would be like a snapshot of the area at the time, so things might not be where they were if you were to check back in a day or so. Rangers could store these maps in their inventory or datapad and sell them to players.

I still say one of the best examples of a Ranger to me is Hawkeye from the Last of the Mohicans novel. So much so that I named my wrix Hawkeye.
