Thread: Is the new Ranger REALLY based on the Antarian Ranger?
Message Edited by Calculus_Entropy on 10-21-2005 02:22 PM
The Antarian Ranger's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Climb (Str), Craft* (Int), Demolitions (Int), Disable Device (Int), Gather Information (Cha), Hide (Dex), Jump (Str), Knowledge* (Int), Listen (Wis), Move Silently (Dex), Search (Int), Spot (Wis), Survival (Wis), and Swim (Str).
Demolitions, Move Silently, and Hide are well represented. Further info Here.
Coreth beat me to it. But here's a good break-down of the old AR skills from the WoTC game to the in-game skills that Rangers will have.
Climb-- Terrain Negotiation
Craft- crafting traps, camo kits and HEPs
Demolitions- using traps
Disable device- being able to disable traps
Gather Information/Listen/Search- stealing
Hide/move silently- Using camo and HEPs
Jump/swim- no corresponding action
plus, we get the new form of tracking, which seems cool.
I am still not 100% convinced, but that did make me waver a bit
I'm all good with wilderness survival-I plan to be keeping Master Scout anyways, so it fits like a glove. The only thing that still sets me off is the whole "stealing" thing, which was a mistake. If they'd called it information gathering or something, we probably wouldn't be having all these "Rangers = Rogues" bleating going on around here.
Edit: Gee, did I really say THREE traps? There goes my math-boom, flash, ouch-these-sting, and ouch-my-feet would be FOUR traps. My math teacher would be disgusted....

Well, Calc, to be fair, the "Blowing stuff up" is getting more press than it deserves. The explosive is one trap out of three listed in the revamp doc; we've also got darts and caltrops thrown in, as well as a "flash-bang", which really isn't what you'd call destructive power.
coreth beat me again, but that's cause lithium ate my post.
A lot of the "neau-ranger" stuff is getting a lot of hype and is getting focused on too much. The HX2 mine and the "stealing" skill are the two largest examples. People see them, and they lose the forest for the trees, it seems (this is not a jab at you Calc, but a comment in general). If the HX2 mine was did lightning damage like the assassin traps in Diablo II, we wouldn't be getting compared to commando. The objection doesn't seem to be that Rangers can't have damage-dealing ground traps, but the fact that it's called a mine and exploides. Same with stealing-- call it intelligence gathering and the comparrison to theives would pretty much go away, even if the skill stayed exactly the same.
and remember Calc-- being "based on" something doesn't mean a direct translation.
But, SWG has a way of making those big, creative leaps. When I think ofa pistoleer, I think of an old west (movie glorified) gunslinger. That isn't even CLOSE to what is in the game. With the CU, pistoleers were given a crowd control element, but but rifles and carbines would be MUCH more effective in suppressing fire.
So I guess I am saying, the DEVS creative liberties stike again, and I should just get over it
Well the old ranger wasnt AR either but it still didnt stop people from playing one and creating a character around one. I dont think this is any exception to that. It is by no means that pure AR that some make it out to bebut i dont think anyone who took time to think expected that.
A character is what you make of it, our new skill set just allows us to get closer tobecoming a true AR in terms of our overall template possibilities.
The only problem with being AR is the fact we are lumbered with this so called desire to help and aid the jedi scum. Not a fecking chance. If the leet wankers fall down, lets all have a kick and ill be the first one to hand out steel toe-cap boots.

Bloody Jedi
Bingo-Ranger 2.0 may be BASED on the Antarians (loosely, of course), but there's enough backstory to the actual Antarians that would be a straitjacket for a lot of current Rangers (especially, say, the Imperial Rangers). But as far as I know, the Antarian Rangers are the only versions of the SW Ranger that has that much detail to it. So Calc, you're right-the new Ranger is NOT the Antarian Ranger; but it also doesn't mean the new Ranger can't be an Antarian Ranger.
For the record, I would have no issues helping Jedi...too bad I've yet to meet anyone other than these lightsaber wielding wanna-be's (ok, there are perhaps two exceptions).
What I'm kinda hoping for (I'm not getting my hopes up though...) is some kind of quest that you can do to get an "Antarian Ranger" tag to display, and the abilty to help jedi. The last part I know won't happen... but after reading all the links lately about what Antarian Rangers are, it'd be fun if we could....
Edit: I can think of 4 jedi that I'd want to help... all in my guild... all played by adults...

I admit I am among those mentioned. I have a master Ranger and before the CU it was my favorite character. I have taken a few months off and when I returned I read stealth and stealing. I have no interest in playing a DnD style thief (besides those sound more like smuggler skills) and so have avoided playing Ile until the revamp is over and the verdict comes in. I am gunshy when it comes to changing Ranger and I think I will sit this one out and read peoples opinions before I use my respec token and comit Ile to any particular profession.
Pre CU I loed wandering around without armor sneaking past deadly enemies and taking out creatures that even armored and buffed counterparts feared. After the CU I was lucky to live just walking in the wilderness. Now I just want to know what the heck is going on with this profession before I end up commiting myself to something that does not resemble the class I had come to enjoy so much. Until then I can be found in cantinas on Kauri or Sunrunner. Stop by for a break anytime.
