a little while ago i asked a ranger for some hide prices, what he sent back nearly gave me a heartattack. for example i asked for a price on 10,000 lokian leathery hides with no oq requirements as they where for practicng and gaining xp and was quoted 400,000 credits. To me this seemed like he was trying to rob me so with a friend i headed off to lok and we spend 3 hours doing gurk missions and harvested the 10k of hides ourselfs while also gaining about 250k weapon xp and about 80,000 credits each.
When i sell resources my price is based on the statistics, when i craft something price is based on the ammount of resources taken to make it. Taking resources for instance, the highest oq,sr and mal steel to make the best armour sells for around 4 cpu so my question to rangers in general is was this price a fair price for what i was asking and if so how do you justify it?

HIGHEST OQ selling for 4 cpu?? LOL
please, I can sell any over 900 OQ avian meat with anything over 700 PE for over 100cpu. I got quoted 150 cpu one time for that stuff.
Leathery hide from Dath with good stats was selling like crazy on my server. I sell to a guildie for 14 or 15cpu, but I saw prices ranging from 50 to 125cup being shouted.
If you're selling for 4cpu for good stuff, you're getting the Royal Ranger Developer Treatment(aka screwed). I suggest you put good stuff on the bazaar as an auction and see how high it goes.
As for low stats, I sell for around 3-10 cpu depending on how low it gets. I won't sell for less than 3 cpu...maybe one of you didn't understand the order/price and thought he was charging 40cpu??? I don't know. But if the stuff was any good, you shouldn't be suprised about a 40cpu price, especially if you don't know the guy.

okay and here's how I "justify" my prices:
First of all, supply and demand. There are less people willing to go out and harvest since you can't AFK hunt, and few people are willing to spend the skillpoints to become really good at harvesting.
Secondly, time. As I said, I have to be at the keyboard to hunt. That's time I could be spending doing other things, and you're asking for a lot of time to get big creatures. Especially Rangers, who spend massive amounts of skill points on non-combat profs, we can't "stack" combat skills, so it takes a while for us to kill stuff. Artisans can just put up a harvester (or a LOT of them) drop some power & creds in the machine and say goodbye
Third, my expenses. I also need armor to hunt big creatures, buffs, weapons, food and drink, sometimes spices, cloning, insurance. There is a little less risk for an Artisan.
That's about it. As you can see, it's a little harder than simply point and click to hunt. Yes, it's a good XP grinder too, but what if you're a master already? You can't tell me that simply because I get XP means I should drop my price. Nor can you say that me getting missions means you should pay me less. Basically I look at it like this: Missions help me get my orders done quicker sometimes, but I take that money as my "extras money" meaning that pays for the aforementioned items. The contract pays for my time and energy as well as for the rarity of the good resource. You're paying so that you can do other things while I grab hide for you. That's why great stuff, which can be stockpiled, goes for so much.

I agree with phenix completely. The time invested in order to provide the supply to buyers especially on things like avian meat at times is ridiculous. Avian's for example have some of the lowest creature levels in the game meaning the lowest harvest per which in turn means the most amount of time invested providing to our buyers. When you take into consideration the key factors for harvesting
- Time
- Food
- Drink
- Armor
- Droid Management (annoying)
- Creature level of requested resource
- Quality
These are the main factors I take into consideration when I set a price for my clients. I would much rather sell endor wooly hides that have amazing quality for 60 cpu when I can harvest 300 per from screechers and get upwards of 2500+ harvest per lair than to sell avian meat for 70 cpu when it takes me a full day to amount anything I would even consider sellable as a stack. The price needs to reflect the time invested and the difficulty to harvest, not the quality.

Here we go again!! First I must say everyone good points, but the market will decide its value everyday of the week!!
I just finished a contract for a long time customer for 10cpu.
I am going into contract for 30 cpu tmrw.
But, I just made 3 million off AVIAN on YAVIN in 3 days! 100 cpu!
And I have made up to 150 cpu!!
I have a client base and I charge them what I think its worth.
I am MAXED out so ther whole XP doesnt matter!! I am doing it because I like it!!

I agree totally with what was said, and I would like to stress the point that we need to be at the keyboard to get our resources. This is a painfully slow process.
I'm also a Master Doctor, Master Combat Medic on my other character. What do I need to do to make a lot of items? I throw them in a factory of which makes my components for me. Really good Stim Bs sell easily for 125k on my server. I craft the schematics, put them into the factory, let them grind - ding they are done - take out, remake a new schematic, and put back into my easy bake oven. About a day later, I have a good 300-500 Stim Bs, which relate to 6-10 crates, which sell for over a million.
What did I use for resources? Stuff that's taken with my harvesters.
Meat and hide are harder to come by. Right now, on my server, the best meat available is insect meat on Rori. You ever hunt on rori? There is nothing that gives a good amount of meat. We are talking at most 30 units per kill for a ranger. It's very time consuming to gather this by the thousands upon thousands.
I hope that reinforces what was said by the others here.

thanks for all the replies, just like to point out that i was trying to find out if this was a fair price not to come onto your boards and have a go about pricing. what suprised me was the difference in price between high oq mineral prices where i have just bought 100k of steel with oq, sr and ut over all over 900 for 400k then comparing to 10k of hides with an oq of about 60 for same price. never having bought hides before this way i wanted to check with the guys who do the work on what they thought was fair and why.
well you answered my question and im gratefull but got to admit i think ill stick to hunting it myself for a while as these priceswould considerably increase my pricing structure but i now understand why u charge so much.

The key factor is time.
Unlike artisans, who can load the factory and go do something else, we have to be harvesting to get anything. And there ain't a macro for that. Take avian for example - a doctor wants some to grind with. We have to kill hundred of animals on some planets to geta decent stack, and that takes time. Whatever the stats, you are paying for my time.
I don't take orders - period. If a good resource spawns, and I feel like hunting it, I do. If not, no loss to me. Yes, I was on Lok hunting avian. No, I will not go to Yavin to do the same (I freaking hate Yavin).
40cpu for decent quality leather off of Lok is not that high. You said you wanted whatever, but we are stuck with what has spawned. Regardless of what you want it for, if it is decent stuff, you are paying decent stuff prices. You are the one stuck with the component requirement, not us.

Garb, you say that you will stick to hunting to get the resources you need, but if you bought the resources, you could focus on making more items for sale, thus you would sell more items, you could even reduce the margin you make by selling at the prices you do now and due to the increased sales still make as much profit over time, and possibly a great deal more.

I have only ever quoted a price to a potential client once, and that was because he wanted something I was alreay harvesting to fill a different order, and I told him what the other guy was paying me. It isn't unusual at all to see people offering 35 cpu for pretty good hides, sometimes bumping it up for exceptionally large stack (example is a contract I have now for edor wooly, 35 cpu for 10k+ stacks, 50 cpu for 25k+ stacks). One guy who I do a lot of business with offered 60 cpu for insect meat! After supplying him for a while, and finding him to be a pretty good customer, I offered to lower the price in order to keep us both out of the poorhouse.
Personally, my observation is that crafters know what the resources are worth to them. Not every crafter has the same prices in mind, but it usually doesn't fluxuate very much. I let them suggest a price, and then if it is unacceptable, we can haggle a bit.... Most of the time though, a crafters offer is completely acceptable for me.

Everyone, including the originator of the thread, has presented good points.
A similar point of view for rangers like me would be presented as such:
1. I'm my guild's only ranger.
2. My docs and I have an agreement - I go get, they trade/pay me in return
3. I'm spending a lot of time harv'ing for my docs
4. Anyone who wants to interrupt this is going to pay the market's worth
5. Anyone who doesn't like the quote is welcome to turn me down... many have.
6. I've never tried to out and out take advantage of anyone; I've even quoted prices under the market for close contacts.
7. I've unfortunately spend A LOT of time harv'ing for folks who quoted me one price but then suddenly said "oh, that 50cpu isn't working anymore... I can only afford 20cpu... can I still have the 50k units you harv'd for me?" So call me jaded but after a few times this starts to sting...

Just a quick tip if your ever put into the situation where your challenged onyour pricing. I once had someone claim that my pricing was unfair, and rangers like me were to blame for composite armours often large price tags. Gave them one figure that shut them up: at 50cpu, the highest Ive sold wooly hide for, 2000 credits is all that is needed to cover the cost of the hide in a composite armour chest plate. Thats right, only 40 units of wooly hide is required in the making of a chest plate, the piece of armour with the highest unit needs. So if the supposedly high priced wooly hide is playing only a small part in the price tags of composite armour, what is it then that costs so much for the armoursmiths to charge what they do? An armoursmith would saythat otherresource costs obviosuly have a part to play, as well as maintance for factories, vendors and things like critical failiures. What you need to ask is does that really amount to what armoursmiths charge? Go to www.swgcraft.com , check out the skilltree for armoursmiths, and have a look at the amount of resources that go into making a piece of armour, making sure you get the armour layering and like into it. Multiply that by whatever is the cpu on your server for good quality (but attainable through harvestors) resources, and you have the break even value for the piece of armour, minus overheads like factory maintance, so add a couple of hundred credits on for good measures. Now take it away from theprice tag of somehigh end armour, and you should get what mr armoursmith keeps for himself. Im not going to preach on what armoursmiths should charge, as we each should charge what we like, just it pisses me off when we get the blame for composite armour prices. Neither am i going to go on, as I know some very fair armoursmiths, and they outnumber us by a stupid amount anyway. Just rememberthat when thinking why composite costs so much, its got very little to do with rangers. O yea, and its worth checking out what goes into making a enhance pack too, in case your blamed for whatever the docs are charging for a buff in coronet.

do the math he was only charging you 40cpu and although you say you didnt care about quality when you hunted it yourself what was the quality ? if it was even half wat decent id say ya fair price also you said it took you and a friend 3hrs to get what you needed and made 80K well go to dant and spend 3hrs doing group solo missions and you would make alot more at least 500k so the 400k he ask for plus the cash from the missions would about equal out to what he would make on dant for the same amount of time aproximetly so ya it does add up reasonably.
