Add harvesting and you got an avian-collecting machine in the works

That's my favorite way to hunt the little creatures around the galaxy, from the back of my spat Woodstock. My droid follows me and harvests when I need him to. I can chase down the distanced ones and don't need specials to kill anything with. Fast way to collect hide and bones for camps.

Now, how is it we examine the ground from the back of a speeder/mount?
Oh yeah, I remember in Butch and Sundance... no wait, the tracker was on foot. That time in True Grit... no, on foot again. Help?!?
Come on y'all. Anyone who has ever tracked anything knows it is tough enough on foot, never mind mounted.
While I would not mind tracking while mounted, the dismount, track, remount, go... takes all of what, 2 extra seconds. Unless we can track while moving, which is insane if you think about it. But hey, let's make the game easier instead of more realistic.

next, waypoints, and a mommy to guide you to what you found, and she has freaking milk and cookies for you to eat while she kills what you found. Alas, you will have to harvest it yourself, or have your one trick pony droid do it.

I feel the same way but I didnt want to be 1 starred.
Tracking is about following marks on the ground. I know our animations been screwed up since day one with us searching the skies for that elusive footprint! If you track on the move your distance to target and direction will be off. To understand surveying from a mount is easy its mechanical. Areatracking is about knowledge of an area and what you are looking for.

I disagree.
To me rangers have the eyes of an eagle and would be able to spot a broken twig or out of place mark from even the back of a mount.
The only thing i do think should remain is that the mount must be stationary. I dont see a problem with a ranger looking at the ground, but more importantly the horizon for critters.
Perhaps it the areatrack animation was like forage (actually searching the ground) i would agree, but we dont. You put your hand to your forehead and scan the horizon. I dont see being able to do this from the back of a mount a problem in the slightest. Aslong as we cant track on the move i dont have an issue with it. Infact id go as far as to say it would make better sense (the higher POV would enable you perhaps to get a clearer scan of the wilderness, such as looking over the tops of the grass etc).
All in all though, tracking from the back of a mount doesnt fuss me in the slightest, the animation suggests we just scan the horrizon and we would be able to do this from mountback.
Anyway, those are my thoughts on the matter

Well if you want to use the argument thats its a matter of scanning the horizon then i have to agree with you. Personally I hate the /combarea animation for tracking but then i like to roleplay my Ranger so im not normal. From what i have heard the surveying is working from vehicles as well as creature mounts. Do you want to see this limited to creature mounts?
And can you keep us informed on what the devs say back to you on this. Because i think a lot of us would like to hear there logic on this.

Agreed with Calc, as long as we're stationary, I don't see a problem. We could see just fine from up there.
And, like I've said before, I'd much rather be able to maskscent and camo while mounted. The macro's fine and dandy, but I'd rather not have to stop at all.

Well, I like the areatracking Droid idea myself. If you look at R2-D2 in Empire Strikes Back, he had that little scanner deal that he was using from the door of the Hoth base to try and spot Luke. True, he did get caught off guard and eaten (temporarily) by a swamp monster a little later in the film, but he did have area-track capability. If I could have an R3 with that module and some Harvesting modules, I'd be a very happy Dewback riding Bothan.

Being said this way though it would seem that realism would include the fact that a tracker could not ID everything within 500m. (sarcasm off)
But to eliminate this we should have a master ranger perc to use a special scouting droid that would track beyond any humanoids ability.
Just because a ranger knows nature doesnt mean hes using leaves to wipe and twigs to floss.
ie: I am an avid outdoorsman and I myself use everybit of new technology that will make my life easier.
(edit
I just wanted to add while im on it, I HATE HARVEST DROIDS!!!
worst idea ever (well at least for us)
WE ALL WANT SOME LOVIN,
but as rangers, do you really think we'll get it?
