Thread: CL taking the fun out of rangering?
It was the veeeery stupid aggro avoidance thing they added to the level system.
Which also broke Camo / Mask Scent, and replaces them to some extent at this time.
Yeah, something is wrong there. On my MCH/MDancer, I get more wild ag than I want most of the time. On my cl 0 GM Ents and Ent/Crafters - I get even more, lol. It's odd that the more you like combat, the less encounters you are given. The less you like it, the more you are given.
I understand the concept of "health" and "combat prowess" and all that - I also get the concept of keeping "low level" chars out of "high level areas" - but it doesn't make much sense in play for the game world we have.
Ag is too hard to avoid for CL 0's because there aren't clear "low level" areas - the game world just wasn't made that way. There aren't enough "high level areas" either for those who do want that kind of play, because again the game world wasn't made that way.
CL 0's need to be given safe passage to carry out their non-combat gameplay and elite combat players need to be given challenges and danger as they carry out their regular play - the CL system is not working out for either ends with the game world's legacy set up.
I also think that the CL granting skill boxes should have a separate skill point pool, but the way ag is handled based on CL needs to be looked into anyway - as well as normal environments and travel in between them for each of the playstyles. Where we play in the game world and how both need to be considered and supported through the mechanics -Combat Levelsdon't need to be stopping play goals from being achieved as they currently are. They don't in real level based games. ![]()
Critters are dumb. Dumb and mean. (Even if some of them are really smart...)
They don't look at Joe Commando strolling across the landscape and think, "Hey, we better leave him alone, he's CL80 and we're only CL15..." They're supposed to think "Hey, look, that looks crunchy, lets chew on it and see...."
Kreetles are SUPPOSED to be a pain in the bahookie. They're a pest. It's what they do. Now? They're just another blob of mobile scenery.
Don't even get me started on NPCs....
oh, okay, since you ask!
CL1 TUSKEN???? ZEALOTS???? I've seen scarier Girl Guides. Even at the bunker they're clearly monged on Prozac as anything over middling to mediochre can just swan into the bunker, steal their sandwiches and give the old King a good slapping round the head.
I went out last night, did the Syren's quest. Dark Sun Initiates... CL17??? What? These are supposed to be a gang of vicious cut-throats only intent on ripping the heads off passers by and selling their skulls for use as nightlights. THEY WERE SAT MAKING DAISY CHAINS AND CRYING AT SOME OLD CARPENTERS SONGS.....
gaaah
I found some Krayts. Yah know, big old dragons. CL82. Double chevron. Scary as heck... Yeah, right. Walked right in among them and put a freaking tent up... (Okay, so they ate me about 10 seconds later, but c'mon...)
I used to love getting chased across Corellia and Naboo by the big cats. They used to outrun my speeder... now they just lie in the grass, eating frogs and belching.
Seems these days that the only things that aggro on me are the ones I choose to annoy by throwing traps at.

That one was almost as good as your last CL rant (clicky). Pure genius!

I want to have to fear for mt life on Dathomir (which is actually pretty high CL, from my limited experience there)
I mean, that was literally the only "survival" content. Not pissing the entire planet off and having it engulf you in a metaphorical "Red Tide."
Then they took that away from us, gave it to everyone, and remembered that we used to have it.

The new system with Combat Levels is dumb. I still don't get what was wrong with the old system. It was sophisticated, complex and realistic. You could fight mobs that were red to you, as long as you went about it with some common sense.
I guess that's what madethemwant to change into the new system...
The old one forced you to have skills you maybe didn't want to have but needed. So you could be out there relatively unharmed, even as just a crafter. The old system forced you to think about what you were doing and how you were going to do it. The new system doens't require any thought. Just bash what's in your CL range... Fire and forget.
*shrug*
I'd take the old system back anytime. That system was fun, because it was complicated and sophisticated. But by all means not hard. You just had to use your brains more... And I happen to like that.
I remember being on Endor or Dathomir once, under the old system. Those places freaked me out and I was sitting in front of my computer, being actually scared whenever I ran into creatures. It made me hate those places and made me never wanting to go there.
In fact, all creatures on all planets made me apprehensive as long as I didn't know how to handle them properly. They were dangerous and could hurt you if you weren't careful. That is gone now, like you all said. The various planets and creatures aren't realistic anymore, they don't instill the proper fear and respect anymore... I miss that. I also miss no longer getting any XP from killing any creature below your CL. The XP you got for killing acreature, regardless oftheir CL and yours was way more realistic, IMHO...
Okay, this is hardly the place for an anti-CU rant, soit's not ![]()
I'm just acknowleding what you say. I used to do a lot of scouting before I went to the HAWT side (
) and I loved it (am in fact reconsidering taking it back up).

Also, just too darn sophisticated and complex for all those PS2 kiddies to deal with.
