Thread: Need advice on Pistols vs Rifles again.
Few reasons, I know pistols and have a ton of them, some of them came over the CU great and do alot of damage. Like my old acid gun I only used to use to bust lairs. That respeced higher than my DE-10s. Also, I'm not sure if this still applies post-cu, but I liked having several guns for different situations.
There are just too many circumstances where mobs are in your face right from the getgo. I'm sure rifle is still usefull at point-blank range, but I'd rather have my pistol at my side.
I'm finding the new shots available to Pistol pretty fun. Esp. the stopping shot which seems to stick every time and usually gives me enough chance to down a SINGLE charging enemy. If i'm getting aggroed and alone, I'm usually chopped meat.
In the new group-intensive combat system. It's hard to harvest and kill at the same time. With so much going on at once, I like being close to the action as beasts are going down so I can harvest and move on while still combating. If I was a long distance away with rifle, it's hard to get a pause to run close enough to harvest.
Like I said, I haven't tried Rifle like I should and would love to hear counter-arguements or someone pointing out the flaws in mine. I've only really had the last couple days to "play" with my ranger because my doc/mch was such a mess post-cu I had to get her setup first. If rifleman is obviously better, I'd like to find out now and maybe change my mind before the respec period is up.
I was a Pistoleer forever. I mean from day 1.
I had to drop it. The shots work, the specials work well, but the lack of range makes it tough to stay alive, as you are always in the creatures "hit zone". (Murphy's Law, if they are in range, so are you)
I went MBH with some carbineer just so I could get some FS boxes filled. Now I trap and shoot from 59 meters and laugh at Krayts and rancors. Even without the cool specials I can solo the biggies.
I hate to say it, but Pistoleer is not a viable option for solo rangers, even with traps.

My main goal right now is to fill force boxes too. And considering that there's no way I can be both Master Ranger and Master Pistoleer after I get a mere 4 fs boxes filled, what's the point of trying to maintain my template now?, i figure.
Do you mind sharing your template? Did you keep some of your scout/ranger skills? I've never dabbled with bh or carbineer and would like a solid template that I can then customize.
I have to agree with JBMat.
I have been aMaster Ranger/Pistoleer forever and now Ifind it nearlyimpossible to solo level 80 lairs. I use traps and stopping shot, but all it takes is a second creature to aggro me and I am either dead or running away.
Ilove pistoleer and it is fine in groups, but soloing is no longer an option. I love to group, butI also love to solo andI really miss it. I think it may be time to switch to rifles/something else. I just wish the range on pistolswas further than 35m ![]()

BH. For the KD/Dizzy line (I think it's 0040)
and, iirc, that still leaves you 'enough' points to keep Novice Ranger and a few harvesting boxes.
Go prone at 65m, single shot to draw one critter out, phec it, snare it, stun it and phec it again. Whether or not it's still moving after that use your heaviest hitting shot to sap it.
If you are in a group the group leader should have everyone hold off on harvesting till the critters are down. Then everyone harvests at the same time and moves on. That way nobody loses out because they were far out and dealing damage. Anyone harvests before they get the say-so tehy're getting close to 'leaving' the group, possibly when they are surrounded by a bunch of seriously p'd off critters which are suddenly WAY higher than the solo-players CL.
Interesting thread, I'm going through similar debates with myself just now.Although while the respec is on, I'm not doing it with ranger. Obivously I started out as ranger. Master Ranger and Master Rifles to be precise. In this mode I found combat very slow, boringand frustrating. I'm trying Pistolieer at the moment, and I think it's fantastic for inflicting states, IMHO it's doing what our traps should be doing, but aren't.
Anyway, with that in mind, and what some of you have said about the short range of pistols, then I offer a suggestion. You can have the best of both worlds by taking advantage of one of the more vague and silly notions of the combat revamp (no, it isn't an upgrade). Even if you're a pistolieer, you can use just about any other weapon. So say you're master pistolieer, and thus have advanced stopping shot, you can grab a rifle and root something at upto 65m away!
Edited for half missing sentence!
