Thread: Is there any reason to get the Trapping or Camping branches of Ranger?
Am I missing something? Are those skills more useful than I realize? I really like the idea of being a Master Ranger for role-playing reasons, but if those points just get me more of the same as what I get from scout, then I'll spend the points on something else.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Nope. No real reason currently. imho currently: only reason to be a Master is the RP aspect (that would be me
) or to be able to make Dathomir Camo Kits. You can instead buy those from a master and free up the top 3 boxes of that tree as well.
Up to you. You could hang out with us and try to make it worth something, however (also, that would be me
).
Get all of the tracking and that /conceal comand and the rest is pretty much fluff. Not exactly encouraging is it?
No reason whatsoever. I've been a 4/0/4/0 Ranger for about 6 months.

lol, i AM a chick, so I don't need to impress anyone with the size of my camp.
I have read the Outdoorsman proposal. Sounds like alot of good stuff in there. I especially like the idea of having lures to attract certain types of animals in the trapping tree. That would make high-level trapping worthwhile. Set out your bait and wait for your shot. Also, it would be nice to be able to engage in battle from your camp.
Thanks for the input guys. I still have a long ways to go before I get to ranger, but I'll definately keep reading the forum.
I saw the highest level camp once. I was stunned. For that reason only I would advise the camping line. I'm only a novice, but foraging looks to get alot better in later levels too.
I'm becoming Master Ranger because I want to be able to have that tital. It doesn't matter if the skills gained are usless, it just doesn't feel complete without the Master tital. Trapping is pretty useless though. The devs may change it in time.
depends on your other skills as well
You won't be able to trap a Krayt Dragon or an Ancient Bull Rancor without Ranger Trapping, if you don't care about that, don't bother, but I can tell ya it makes a big difference if you do. Free state effects and downed melee/ranged defense while slowing them down significantly.
Then there's the camping tree, if you're a CH, you'll appreciate the succes rate of having foraging +100 rather then +50, since you can use that to feed your pet. And I agree with the above poster, people dig the base ![]()
Then there's the comment about 4040 being unnessacery, 1040 being enough. /conceal skillmods really do mean it's more succesful. You can apply a purchased dathomir conceal kit with /conceal +30, but you'll be discovered a lot more then if you were conceal +100.
Again for CHs, the terrain negotiation is good. See, rancors tend to discover you if you're very close, unless you go prone. If you crawl toward the rancor group and attempt a tame on the rancor baby, it will likely wander off a little. Without extra crawl speed, you won't be able to keep up with it, it will get out of taming range and you will fail. To avoid that you'll have to stand up and walk or run, in which case you might be sniffed out and attacked. With terrain negotation, you can crawl fast enough to keep up with the baby and tame it.
If they would just increase the distance we can throw our traps I would be pretty happy with them. OR let us lay them out to actually *gasp* trap a creature. Why the range thing? I'm a rifleman, like most real life hunters.
It's a shame that the closest thing I can get to a real trap is a Crustacean/Shellfish harvesting tool that any shmoe can use as well as a person who is supposed to be a "master of the wilderness"
All complaining aside, I love being a Master Ranger.
I have an Alt that is a master droid engineer. Go read their boards and you to will LOVE being a Ranger. Man, DEs are getting shafted. Droid Invasion, my eye. Droid Evasion is more like it.

That's a good one. I noticed that there was nothing in there that I could use. Exploding droid... ya, sure. but then again, this "balancing" of the combat classes... maybe they are trying to tell me something... ![]()
I am sure it was built on the Grenade system, and therefore all the had to work on were getting the states to stick, rather than on the mechanics of trapping. Just a guess, tho.
