This would be so awesome if we had this ability ! We would have a use in pvp other than spotting the enemy and mobile buff/heal stations.

This has been discussed before and it really comes down to even if you werent on radar players would just use a 3rd party app to sniff the packets coming into SWG and it would just code in a blip on the radar that equals you. Thats why SOE decided to put the radar in in the first place. They knew that pvp where surprise was an issue people would use 3rd party radar apps.

Would be nice but very unlikely to happen.

right.

while a darn good idea, and one that I would support, there are numerous hacks and ways to go around this.

Also, with ranger... even if we get the first strike, we dont have the ability to finish the fight with so many skill points invested in ranger and 1 weap profession compared with a combat stacked character.

There would be too many people using hacks to sniff out concealed players so there would be no point.

The radar should of never shown players from launch. It ruins pvp and makes everything a simple tale of follow the red dot.

They should of made it only work to show npcs and creatures. Then i may actually get 'jumped' by a tk in a back alley, may actually use tactics to kill my enemy, actually give a crap about where i go and what towns are 'safe'.

RADAR RUINS PVP = No stealth, no sneaking, no supense, no jumping out your seat when someone jumps you from a back alley, no secretly and quietly infiltrating opposition towns

Fred must be sleeping...Check out the stickied "Stealth' proposal at thte top of this forum . It is a very well planned idea that almost takes care of all the issues the devs would have with radar removal.

This would be a huge boon to Rangers, who like Creature Handlers and Squad Leaders, are needing a bone tossed their way by the devs about now. This would suddenly make Rangers instantly popular again, I'd think. It would give pvp players the ability to actually sneak around, instead of being a huge red blip on their enemy's radar, and would also make combat much more frantic and strategic than the old 'look at radar, spin around and use /tab lock-on, annihilate Ranger' that we're used to.

Seems all they give a damn about these days is marketing the game by pumping up Jedi and ignoring the rest of us.

Fred? Is that you Fred? Have you resorted to creating additional forum accounts for this proposal?

I had an extended weekend and I'm a little slow getting the fog out of my eyes. Also: they gave me actual work to do.

Ranger is not a profession. It's a lifestyle.

I love this idea. Right now, I feel our primary purpose is to gather meat for crafters and to point out critters for hunters - we have no real use in the GCW. This would allow us to provide tactical advantage for large-scale assaults (and defense, for that matter.)

Imagine the delightful horror when that "empty" base turns out to be loaded with defenders, /concealed from sight...

The only modification is that you aren't removed from the radar of other party members, if you're in a group.

Huh? That's against the ToS, right?

Yes, it is against the ToS but it would happen. Players would validate it by saying they cant compete as well as others in PvP since they "know" are using it. It would be a cheat and if caught their account would be bannable. Thats why they went ahead and included the radar from the get go. They just avoided a cheat by including in the build of the game.

I'm curious, then... if this game is so security-less, why aren't we seeing/hearing about more hacks all the time? Hacking into the combat to substitute a third party program in in place of radar would be *easy?*

If hacking's A) so easy, and B) so versatile, I'd expect it to be a huge problem. So why isn't it?

To easy to get caught. One of the other online games i played had a speed hack problem. They could find the players using it and ban them. The advantages are worth being banned in most, not all, players minds

I am speaking from my time playing UT-UT2004 and my knowedge of secure games and hacks may be wrong. If anyone wishes to correct anything I get wrong please do.

One of the main ways to hack a game is alter your game files client side but just enough so that the server you connect to doesnt recognize it. But, with the way SOE updates so many files so often makes it tough for anyone who does hack this or that in the files since they would constantly have to go back and recode their hacks. I have no clue what could be hacked in this game so I could just be talking out my butt.

Now, if this game was twitch based(like JTL will be) you will find people might try to hack with something called an aimbot. Pretty useless in SWG since we autotarget anyway. I dont know how they actually work but they do all the work for you. In something like JTL they would autotarget(where autotargeting isnt allowed) and they would fire automatically. Relieving you of all need of skill, speed and tactics.

Another way that people cheat in online games are 3rd party apps that break SOE's ToS. There are apps out there that will "sniff"(ie. decode all incoming packets for game related data) that your pc receives. If coded by a talented person this will yield an onscreen radar showing where your opponent is. Very nasty for folk who play First person games where surprise attacks are highly relied upon for easy frags.

So, "if" SOE had decided to not utilze a radar ingame they would be found everywhere for download. Also, with this comes the shot of people getting their CD-Keys and usernames/passwords stolen since hacks are a common form of virus/trojan carriers.

So, A)Hacking is not easy. It takes a very fairly informed knowledge of the game in questionto do so. Its not common because SOE updates files nearly every week. Other games only send out patches everyfew months orso until they do cheats are given time to be built tested and used against enough people to get popular. B) They arent quite versatile but there are ways to make your game easier. I wont mention names but there are already programs out there that wil do all the work for you when it comes ot crafting. If you want to Master any Crafting Prof all you need is the supplies listed by every profession so grinders can concentrate on it and be gone. This little app just moves the mouse around the screen for you and does all your clicking. This too is a cheat and a break of SOE's ToS but it happens.

Due to frequent updates this game has few cheats to my knowldege. Thats why you only hear of exploits instead of cheats.
