Hi there everyone. It's me again.. the kind of new, kinda not too new Ranger.
So, I've been doing my thing.. practicing trapping, camping, talking the heads off people who haplessly wander into my camp. When I finally get enough experience to get some more skills, I try to find some other rangers to help train me (because as you know, finding Ranger trainers is very difficult). So I use the nifty player search tool, and boom, find a "Tracker."
I say to myself, "Tight! Now to get some training (because I'm sure this guy's got it all)"
I say to myself, "Tight! Now to get some training (because I'm sure this guy's got it all)"
"Sorry, I'm only ranger x/x/4/x." I make a really dissapointed face
. This happens to me a few other times, and I get tired and go to a player city who has a ranger trainer. When I ask them if they are going to get any of the other skills, I get a, "No, that would mess up my template." or "2 much sp" or something else gay like that. Am I allowed to say that?
I've just been noticing a lot of people doing this... mastering scout, getting only some ranger, but still toting around that nice ranger identity. Anyone else pissed like me?

It's never bothered me, but with the harvesting changes, we're going to see more people doing it. While I'll still train and support them with a polite smile,I just have a hard time being warm and fuzzy about their 0040ness now. /shrug

Mastering Ranger is a big skillpoint commitment. I can understand why someone wouldn't choose to walk the entire path. I can respect those who don't master. However, I will admit that I respect masters a wee bit more.

I couldn't give a monkeys whether someone is 0040. I only care that I invested the time and effort to get Master Ranger. If someone wants to play a different skill set, thats fine, its their game, they do whatever they want. However, don't come crying to me when your maskscent breaks and you have no camo to apply while hunting on Dathomir

Since I am even worse - Ranger 0030... er... nope, can't say I mind.
I was Master for a while. I was sad to drop the title, very sad, but effectiveness and fun gameplay won out over pride. Right now Maaster Ranger does not have much going for it (after yesterday it has more, but then there are still those other three lines...). You shouldnt Master something you dont enjoy - and a lot of people don't enjoy the skill points used up in trapping and frontiering. When I enjoyed being a Master I was a Master. When I stopped emjoying being a Master I stopped being a Master. On my main character at least. Its all about what is fun for you.

I'm currently 1034 in ranger. Plan to master because i find it fun. I get a kick out of it. Plus I like being a rare profession. Since a created my character a few months ago I haven't had a tag up. The first will be master ranger.

My only problem with 0/0/4/0 is that no profession should give all of a bonus set in the same skill branch. Just as combat skills were moved around to prevent defense stacking templates, I feel other professions should be given the same treatment. A dabbler should never be almost as good as a Master in anything, even if it is just one skill.
Personal viewpoint, however.

Here is my connumdrum.
I'm currently:
Master Rifle
4040 TKA for Mediate and Area Spin 2
Ranger 0020.
Smattering of FS skills.
For me to do Master Ranger, I'd have to drop all of TKA, all of bralwer (the unarmed tree).
I would need to be the following:
Master Rife
Master Ranger
maybe novice medic
smattering of fs skills.
for me it would mean maybe +80 creature harvesting. Don't get me wrong, I'd love the bonus and I'm thinking about it. But before there was no need. What is the diff between 0040 ranger and master?
You get traps? come on. As a master rifle, I wipe all of the normal creatures out in less then a min.
You get Camps? Whats the difference between the novice ranger one and the maxed out one?
You get Camo? I got mask scent up the yahoo. I got +25 clothes, BE enhanced Jawa, and the +10 stims. I only need it when i'm at the village and my buffs wear out of whatever. I still have to worry about the NPCs anyway.
I hunt. I like to hunt. I make a fine living in game hunting organics. With the new bonuses, I may do master ranger, but I'd hate to give up TKA.
Alas, +80 from where I am is sweet. Plus I bonus my friends an extra 10.
hmmm.....

Well, as of yesterday I'm Ranger 4040 (keeping that first line cos I like to be able to beat feet out of trouble once in a blue).
Why drop MR? Well, I needed novice medic back and I've got points invested in merchant so I can keep a couple of vendors up.
I've carried the tag, with pride, for more months now than it's been really useful to me but eventually you've got to weigh up what you've got invested with what you're getting back and consider where you want to be effective.
I've run with a Novice Marksman tag and clothes for the past couple of months as I got tired of a) the d00l me d00d brigade, b) the ooh rangers are useless in PvP brigade and c) the tell hell that goes with having tracker or MR up. I can still do my cammo, tho not on Dath cos I forgot to do a factory run before retiring (doh!) and at the end of the day I'm happy with the direction my toon is taking rather than being stuck in some dogmatic "gotta keep the badge" rut.
Just one thing, before dissing folk as being 'ranger poseurs' for only having 0040 make sure you read their bio, you never know who you might be writing off as a one liner.

No, it's their decision... and I respect that.

Yeah, I was Master Ranger for quite a while but found I never used camps or traps so I dropped those lines so as to try new things and experiment and have fun. Tho, the big camps I do miss dearly I found I missed the Master Ranger tag more.
When in reality more bang for your skill points is jsut to get 0-0-4-0 so you can harvest and track. Its a big money maker. Mask scent at that point is fairly good in its own right.
I tip my hat to every Master Ranger I see tho.
