Thread: Why this new patch COULD hurt Rangers

First- I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea. I like the new patch a lot. I think it makes Rangers more important in the game and I think it is great that Rangers actually get more harvesting bonuses than non-rangers. this is just thought i had and i wanted other people's opinion on it

Sorry about that i just don't want anyone to get the impression i am complaining with this post, i am not. Now on to the actual post

Ok with this new patch Rangers will be able to harvest a ton more resources. This will flood the market with more organics, so the price of organics will be going down. I believe the days of selling stuff for 100+CPU will soon be gone. This will hurt rangers

However where our price will go down, our quantity will go up. Instead of selling 6k of resources at 100CPU i might be selling 10k of resources at 60CPU. My only concern is that we will not be selling 10k of resources at 60CPU but instead 20k of resources at 20CPU.

In other words, will the quantity of resources harvested be able to overcome the price drop that is bound to come out of this patch? I am not an economist so i don't have any really good answers, but i thought it was a question worth bringing up.

Please add your two cents (and if we have any economists out there i would definantly like to hear from you)

Right now I think organics are pretty darn expensive. Some price decrease wouldn't be that bad.

Also, keep in mind that waaaay back a lot of people argued that allowing everyone in a group to harvest a corpse, instead of just one person, would flood the market with organics. This really did not happen. I don't think we can predict ahead of time what exactly will happen with the market - it depends on a lot of factors.

The demand for resources will still be higher than the supply.... Let me explain why.... Players, hate to hunt. So, we are fine... the prices won't drop as drastically as you would think.

Your concerns are valid, but I do not think the economy will be negatively impacted by the change. It's called equilibrium and all systems reach it one way or another. Our economy is a little screwy right now; remember Luke Skywalker complaining about the cost of a trip to Alderaan? Yeah, try buying a YT-1300 with 10000 credits on your server, even a REALLY used one.

The change will likely result in greater demand for our services as demand for finished products increases because less-well-off players see their limited funds become slightly more valuable. We will get paid slightly less per unit for our resouces, but demand will increase overall and we will more often be called to supply the materials necessary. This will tend to make the fat cats a little less fat and us poor Rangers a little less poor.

Our boots will still be dusty, though.

I'm not too worried.

I think prices could do with coming down - the 100 to 300 cpu bracket that we occasionally see on Farstar is a bit ridiculous and I would hope that if we can harvest more cheaply that there might be a knock-on effect in the prices of goods from other professions although I won't hold my breath.

Ultimately, it still depends on people getting out there and doing the hunting and for a very good spawn in a very good quantity, other professions are still going to pay good prices.

Han won the Falcon in a card game I believe, he didn't buy it for 10000 credits. Luke bought four one-way tickets to ride on the Falcon though, if that is what you meant.

I think this will only fill the Ranger's pockets much more. The Dath carn on my server is going for 30cpu right now, and when I would hunt solo, I was maybe doing 60-80k a buff, if the hunting was good. I harvested almost twice that yesterday when I was with someone, and I have yet to log on and take advantage of the significant increase to our harvesting mods at master.

Ok, so I am harvesting a lot more. The problem that I have seen, as it always has been, is getting people out there to actually do it. It is work, and so many people hate it! I have posted this new patch and my desire to hunt with other guild mates, and I cannot get a soul out there in the field, despite my success with it.

So, I think that docs/chefs and the rest will still have a hard time getting their harvest, especially if they are begging for millions of units, as it is like on Bloodfin.

Yes, yes, in a game of Sabacc from Lando.

I meant specifically Luke's remark, "Ten thousand? We could almost buy out own ship for that."

To which Han replied, "Sure you could, kid, but who's going to fly it for you?" and the rest.

That's a pretty clear reference to the cost of a used ship that would carry four passengers.

I'm working on a Ranger on Bloodfin. Personally this will make rangers become better businessmen.

Think of it this way: Good resource spawning going for 20 credits per unit, however, if you wait until there is no good spawn the cpu will go up. I'd just wait to sell. Besides, there still aren't that many people out there hunting since it is an active profession, you can't just set up harvestors like all the other resources.

I hate to nitpick... but Luke would just need a two passenger. Luke, Kenobi... and store the droids in his datapad.
But I see what you mean in terms of the economy. Waaaay expensive. I wonder if there is a way to track how much money I've spent ingame? The answer would probably shock me.

I now will call you master. I can quote many SW movie lines and my wife calls me a geek (which I venemantly deny) but you would appear to have a much "geekier" skill set than I. /cheer /cheer

On the subject at hand I welcome the greater volume of harvested resources. I run my master Ranger alt almost 100% for my armorsmith and have always been forced to be solitary in my hunting. Now I can hunt with friends and be a valuable assett to them and they to me. In addition, why should the resources harvested cost 50+cpu? I think for the time involved certainly it should be valued greater than an extracted resource, say 15 -25cpu, and this methods seems to bring that closer in line.

Also, remember the spawns lasted alot longer a few publishes ago, It seems that most are now under 2 weeks which can be frustrating to try and pull from. And anyhow, larger quantities = lower raw material prices = lower armor price = lower cost to hunt = same profit margin for hunter. (theororetically)
