I am a new ranger (Got to Ranger after a long time, not respeced to master) and after spending hours reading all the excellent suggestions in the development threads, there seems to be a 2 directions people want the profession to go.

Some want to see Rangers turn into some sort of roaming law man (Already handy due to tracking) and others want a more Classical Ranger, a woodsman. From where Ranger is at the moment it seems almost entirely to beorientated towards the woodsman. From where it stands at the moment it looks more like a woodsman character (Creature Harvesting, Stealth, Trapping) than a Texas Ranger.

I was wondering where everyone else would like to see it go in this respect, towards a woods(wo)man who is excellent at hunting creatures from the shadows and being able to craft traps to make his/her job easier. Or whether they'd rather see someone who hunts down the bad guys using their knowledge of the land to assist them?

PS. I think Woodsman, with creature to hit bonuses (or something) and all the other improvements people seem to want (improved traps, camps, harvesting bonuses, camoflage bonusesand a better interface for tracking.)

You reminded me to post my thoughts there. That is kind of a technical discussion though. Sometimes it is fun to play comparisons (though I know Phen hates it!), and try to match visions of ranger with rangers in popular culture. I have seen:

  • The Army Ranger

  • The Metal Gear Solid Ranger (similar to Army Ranger)

  • The "Aragorn" Ranger

  • The Park Ranger

  • The Texas Ranger

  • The Crocadile Hunter Ranger

  • The Predator Ranger

I know there are more... anyone remember them? Basically I think the "balanced ranger" that you are talking about is a SWG Ranger that includes the skills to allow a person to role-play any of these types based on on their personal vision. And that would be pretty cool. Personally I would have a hard time deciding between the Aragorn Ranger and the Predator Ranger. I may have to develop a split personality.

The grizzled lone hunter, wild man o'the woods/hills/soggy bottom.

The "wildlife protection game reserve" type of ranger, responsable for keeping creature population ina defined area at a sustainable level, by hunting, and dealing with incursions by poachers by various means.

Oh, if anyone is interested in a link to Tom Brown's school it is http://www.trackerschool.com/.

My roomate went in college (was too expensive for me sadly, and it is a life-altering and perspective-altering experience. To realize that someone can actual track an owl's movements during the day by watching the tracks of rodents and its other prey just blows my mind. Sounds like a storybook.

One trick my roomate taught me was exercises to expand my peripheral vision (and improve actual eyesight). Well, that and how to start a fire in my dorm room using a bow drill. But I only ever got in trouble from that skill.

We dont fall into any of those rangers, especial army rangers. We are more like boy scouts, lol. Texas rangers are not as bad arse as they used to be. Just get on texas highway patrol and on your 9th year go ranger. My causin is one. Anyway, I would like to see our profession go in more of a army ranger/spec ops direction since we are combatants after all. I still want BDUs star wars style for rangers, lol. With night vision, camo that you can see (camo paint and the use of stuff around us to conceal better), and of course ranger rifles/carbines. As a former ranger carried a pistol on SOME missions buts its not a primary weapon by no means. The rifle/carbine (M4 some with a modified version with a 203 nade on it) is the primary weapons. This is after all a very high tech period in time. I highly doubt they would send thier rangers out with a peice of steel or wood to hack at the enemy. Although the M9 bayonet knife does come in handy.

Anyone ever think about the monty python approch of ranager? We could have the "Flesh wound" attack it cutts of the limbs of any foe in a few seconds letting them bleed cheap kechup like blood yelling incredibly funney lines at us. or the "RUN AWAY!!!" command which would make a white rabbit appear out of no where jumping onto our foes biting their heads off seemingly faster then is possible. even better how about the "Fart in your General Direction" UbEr l33t skill of death, which lets out a stench that automatical kills anyone within the huge radius, after applying every negitive stat and de-buff in the game, this skill would have to be used under extreme caution because it makes your enemies mother into a hamster and their father small like rotten berries (you have to have a french accent to use this skill properly). we must never forget the "what is your favorite color?" skill. This would throw your enemy into the pit of death, and make them look like a generic NPC.

This is my veiw of ranger. highly entertaining and strong at the same time.

cheers!
