Thread: Survival Exp Should Be Based On Distance From Civillization!
The changes coming up that allow folks to make camp right outside the city line got me thinking. Think about it....it's called SURVIVAL experience, not CAMPING experience. It means you're skilled at living out in the wilderness, toughing out the elements, braving the roaming creatures. Setting upcamp right outside the city limits is not what I consider roughing it.
The way it should work, is the rate of survival experience gained would be affected by how far away you are from the nearest city. If you are lazy and choose to camp right outside the city line, you would gain survival experience pretty slowly. 1,000 meters out, you would gain it at about the same rate you normally gain it now. But travel waaaay out to the far corner of the map, a long journey that requires you to dodge aggro redsperhaps 5,000 meters or so from civillization and you should gain survival experience like crazy for camping out there.
Right now, most scouts/rangers simply want to get the survival experience as quick as possible so they don't care how silly or stupid it seems to be gaining something called 'survival experience' 5 feet from the city....I'm sure if they changed it so you could camp and gain exp in the city itself they'd be all for it. I'm sure if they just added a button that gave them 10,000 points of survival exp everytime they clicked on it they'd be all for that too. But personally I'd rather have a realistic system in place rather than an easy one.
Also forgot to add....the rate of SURVIVAL (remember folks, it's called 'survival' exp, not 'camping') experience should basically double on the advanced planets compared to the starter planets.
So for the absolute quickest rate gain, go to Dathomir and run as faaaaar away from the outpost as possible.
Anyone who camps way out there deserves to gain survival exp 10X quicker than the lazy folks camping a few meters from the Bestine cantina.
Good idea.
Makes sense to reward the folks who are in the middle of the map on Lok surrounded by tons of aggro beasts moreso than the folks a couple feet from the starport.
After a few seconds "check the edge of the world, there are hundreds of them" someone shouts back.
Yeah... I don't want to go to 0,0 and see a tent city...
I'd much rather like a change in wilderness xp related to quality of the camp.
Besides... its not like the camps are useful... if they really want to make wilderness xp work.. just make camps more useful to what you do on a regular basis... this is why the offensive bunker/camp ideas are so good because it would allow us to make small camps for fighting that people would WANT to be in.

As far as the problem of everyone making their camp in the same spot far from cities, I don't think that would be a problem.
First of all, the maps are huge and there is a ton of open land far away from the cities.
Second of all, it wouldn't be too smart for everyone to put their camps next to each other as the game's dynamic spawning engine will spawn more mobs depending on the number of people in a given area. If everyone makes a camp in one spot, the game will spawn a lot more mobs in that spot. And of course, we all know that the farther you are from a city the bigger and tougher the mobs are that spawn...specially on the harder worlds. I would think people would tend to look for an open clear area to place their camp. Any 'tent city' on the edge of the world is going to get overrun with red aggro mobs.
And as far as people looking for a camp to heal....honestly when was the last time you were camping out in the wilds and heard somebody shout looking for a camp to heal at? Especially since 50% of the players have some scouting skills anyways. In all my days of camping I've never had somebody seek out a camp, unless it was to pull out a pet which takes 5 seconds. It's always the other way around, with a scout/ranger shouting and asking people to come over to their camp.
I always got the impression that most of the complainers about no-build zones were Novice Scouts. As a scout and now ranger, I find myself 1000s of meters outside cities more often than not. I never had much of a problem getting out ofa no build zone
The only enhancemt I would have liked is an anouncement when you entered and left a no-build zone
I would be happy with a 500m limit. Yeah, it doesn't make sense to camp RIGHT next to town. But on several of the secondary systems like Endor or Lok, you find yourself in the thick of things 100m away.
I don't think the idea of the game is to allow a ranger to trek off into the middle of nowhere and set up camp to gain his xp. Like it or not, the camping feature of the Ranger is meant for groups. And more often than not, groups don't wander out to 0,0.
