I find myself really aggravated sometimes that when I want to hunt anything I have to go get buffed and armor up. Then I think of when JBMat talks about how he rarely wears armor and doesnt worry with buffs.. if I am remembering right.

I want everyone to share their tips on hunting when not buffed or armored. What foods/spices and tactics you rely upon.

I am a Master Rifleman and I rely on brandy, canapes, muon in emergencies and stim-b's. If my concealshot fails I tend to be pretty much screwed unless I run like mad.. lol.

I have Scout 4-0-4-0 and have built a macro that keeps me constantly maskscented. I also use a harvesting droid to up my points abit. Never used veghash with the droids since I never did figure out if it works with them or not.

My human mind pool is set to Health - 750/400/400 Action - 750/400/400 and Mind - 1100/600/600. I have 3 pieces of clothing I wear to make my maskscent/camo effect as high as I can.

So, if we cant get a revamp to make us a lot more independent in our home.. the wilderness. Perhaps we could build a tactics guide to help all Rangers become more independent.

I use bleed shots and surounding wildlife/NPC's to help in un-Buffed un-Armored fighting. You have to pick you targets accordingly but getting a Nightsister Ranger/Elder and an Anchient Bull Rancor to duke it out, sneak in few bleeds to them both and watch the show. A low level pet or good defences should allow you to finish of the winner without much dificulty.

Is there any special way you go about getting the Nightsister and Rancor to fight eachother? Most of the time when I try to do something like this, they walk right past eachother and don't do anything at all. Is there something I'm missing?

I'm CH and Rifleman and this really work well for PvE where I want to pull one out of a pack (like get one Stormtrooper away from the rest)

1. Get at max range from target
2. Do a mind shoot (one shoot, get that bleed going)
3. Run back & peace.
4. After a min or so or bleeding they will come after you. This pulls thom out of the pack
5. close to max range send in pet
6. Finish off with Head Shoot from max range

Good Hunting!

Hi

I seldom use doc buffs, as I am too cheap to spend 10-12k on something that may last 3 hours, but I will use for maybe an hour or two at best, before I have to do real life.

rule 1 - Examine the target, what weapon will work best. Mynocks on Lok are in mixed groups, and one type is 100% acid resistant. Wow did I feel dumb shooting them with acid. Find he lowest resistance and use a weapon of that type.

I do use brandy and accaragam...something, buffs action. I have on mod'd clothes, no armor. +4 melee/+17 defense against stun duster, +15 camo/maskscent pants, +15 defense against bleed shirt, boots. I have found synsteak is ok, just wears out too soon. Some pastry thingus gives me +32 accuracy tho - citrus cake??

I use power ups on my weapons, for damage mainly.

If I am in a hurry, I use a combat droid. If not, just me and traps.

Get to the lair. Buff up- such as it is(btw, I have two missions, both same direction). Maskscent. Healthshot 1 (pistoleers bleed, works on health), HS2, stopping shot --- peace. Move back. Critter aggros, usually alone - if not - go to Plan B. Solo creature - pdart at 50 m- move. Shoot at max range. Glow wire maybe - move. Shoot, move, shoot, move. Dead. It, not me.

Plan B - oh rats, here comes 3 white cons - run. Toss pdart at #1 as he is bleeding. Change to #2 and bleed, pdart, run more. Change to #3, bleed/pdart. By now, #1 is no longer tranked - pop him. I use multi target or fanshot if they are grouped, I can hit a bunch at one time (12 Fed dubs in 3 shots in fact). Use the terrain, find a hill, get up, run the ridge, get down, run faster, find another hill. Somewhere in that mess, you have dropped something. Switch and take out another. Keep moving.

I also use stim Bs to keep me alive and moving.

If I am using the droid, he tanks and fights, I use specials and drop the target beforeit messes up the droid.

Current target du jour, avian on Lok. Sigh. But I just made a half million on the first load and am going for more.

Remember, use TN, traps, and your weapon specials. Use food buffs if you can afford em. A droid is nice to use as a tank. And most important -

EXAMINE THE TARGET - how many guys have gotten no XP in a group, as the target was resistant to their weapon?? Besides me??

With Master Rifleman, you don't even need the bleed to pull. Just attack the closest target from at least 40m (50+m is safer) until they start coming after you. Rifle concealment chance is a great skill.

As for killing stuff, a rifleman just needs to keep the target far away. Lots of Riflemen like killing the creatures before they agro (either with prone/concealed headshots or with concealshot). I found that boring and so I used a much different method (not nearly as safe but a lot more interesting):

1. Single pull using rifle concealment chance (autoattacks used for everything unless specified otherwise).

2. Suppression fire used to keep the creature at distance.

3. Keep shooting at the creature (run away from the creature as you do this--you should stay at optimal distance for your rifle as much as possible).

4. Use warning shot (and peace) when necessary to slow them down and possibly turn them away.

5. Use suppression fire whenever possible to regain distance without needing to peace (there is a timer on this skill).

6. Do not let the creature get within 30m unless you are sure you will kill it before it reaches you (specials like strafeshot2 can be used to speed it up). Once the creature is within 30m, warning shot and suppression fire fail too often for safety (if it fails before 30m you can still retry. If it fails at 15m then you are very likely to get hit).

7. As the creature is about to die, bring it within 15m. Harvest as it drops.

As you can probably guess, this is not an easy or straightforward method of hunting. Traps could probably be used but they stop you from moving and are usually more hassle than help. I had Ranged Support 4. This does not really work without some ranged support skills (threaten shot might work but I'd recommend at least having warning shot). You are very likely to die while trying to learn this method but it is possible to solo creatures like Ancient Bull Rancors with it without any sort of buffs or armor (not even brandy is necessary but you do have to be very careful when hunting like that).

Edit: BTW, most of what JB said still applies. I just found that warning shot and suppression fire were much more useful to me as a rifleman than Phenacine darts. Freezing me in place wouldn't be a problem if I was sure it would hit. But, given that it freezes me in place and is likely to miss, the special attacksare much more useful. I can use warning shot or suppression fire at least3 times for every trap I throw. And they seem to hit more often. As for damage specials, they are not essential but they are very useful. The main problem I have with them is the high HAM costs. A Rifleman can't easily spam specials without buffs (at least mind buffs, i.e. brandy).

I used to be a pistoleer, and I knew the single pull tactic for them (/healthshot 1 or 2, /peace), but now I'm working my way up fencer, and I have no idea how to single pull social creatures. Anyone have any tips for me?

I find myself using /concealshot as my bread and butter. Even hunting Rancors I can go through a lair pretty quick. Just gets tricky on tapping that lair the second time.

If I know the distance/area is right I will go straight to /mindshot2 and then headshot 3 til they get to me. Then I harvest. I am still learning when I can and cant use strafe2.. hehe. I forget that that shot just keeps going. lol... I have accidentally aggro'd so many things its not funny. lol I find myself rarely using suppression fire. Perhaps I need to really go through my specials and learn how to best use them.

Also does anyone know the command for self healing? I hate having to untarget to heal myself. Is it something like /heal damage self?

If they are agressive, try this. Take off maskscent (make sure they haven't checked against it already), walk close to one of them, get them interested in you and then move out of the area (as long as you don't hit them the friends don't seem to join in--peace yourself while pulling them). Also, if you can find a nice bleed CDEF (you want a high potency)then you can use it just like the healthshot tactic above. Single pulling non aggressive creatures is a bit harder as you need some way of getting them to agro you without you attacking them at the same time. I don't think any melee attack lets you do this although intimidate might do something (as it has a decent range but doesn't cause damage). It might be worth trying to see if intimidate causes the creature to come after you. A bleed weapon combined with a camoed lunge might also work but I'm not sure if lunges let you hit the creature without it "noticing" (I'm not aware of any other melee attack that would have a chance, though).

Another nice trick when taking down a lair: If you attack the lair after having damaged it (even out of range), you can pull the creatures to you. It saves the hassle of running over to all of them. But they do have to be close enough to you to notice (I think it is something like 40m).

For me, I use Bofa Treats (small health boost but last for 30 minutes), Brandy, Foraged Foods,Stim Bs, Pixies, Pets (1/1/1/1 CH and a crap probot (post-nerf pre-pub 8)) High Kinetic Mabari ( I can get 24% kin a full suit for like 10-15k), and my 2-hand weapons (0/2/1/1). The key is fight single foes, makes a nice 3 on one. If mutiples show up I pop a pixie, I never have used doc/ent buffs and High Comp was way to high a HAM cost. I can normally take out a few Plains hunters or a full pack (6-8) of Tusk Cats. I refrain from heavy creature fighting till I can get a better pet, a better pet, and better weapons...

I have very little combat. Master Ranger, Master Creature Handler and Pistoleer 0 0 3 0.

I do pretty well but it's so slow.

Things I don't leave home without:

AuKuan Ring (doubt that is spelled right)

AuKuan Shirt

AuKuan Belt

Imperial Medallion for service to the Empire

Padded Boots for service to the Republic

Republic Signet ring

Various bio-clothes including maskscent/taming

Great power-ups

Synthsteak

A level 66 pet.

Ohh..and camo on occasion (I never give up hope)

Ipick my place to attack carefully and hover over /burstrun

Too lazy to buff my armor collects dust at my house.
