Thread: Rangers need a weapon in skill their tree... The Bow!
If memory serves - (got to stop watching the food channel)
The Bow idea was thus -
At novice Ranger, you can gather the material to craft a bow, and have one or two arrows you can craft which do damage, like bleed. Nothng great, nothing to make the other classes scream, after all, it's only good on animals - well, maybe pets later on.
At each level of frontiering - making it useful again - you get another arrow type. The types have been discussed ad nauseum - figure they are like attacks but only good on creatures - blind, dizzy, stun, etc. At the Master level you get two "area" arrows.
Essentially, we get our traps in arrow form, plus a couple of new skills, like bleed.
I was against this originally, but the more we talk about it, the more it seems to fit into our roles.

One problem with this, and i can some it all up in one word..... RANGE
For the bow to be any good at all its going to need to have stats allowing it to be used and hit acuratly at least 50+ meters, The range we can walk to under maskscent and not get aggroed. Now i can live with a bow firing 50m but that makes rifles a bit naff as they can fire just 14 m further than a sodding bow?.
Combat ranges would need to be vastly changed to allow this item to have its place, and aggro ranges.
Point blank range 0-3 meters, for swords, brawlers
1-5 meters for pikeman (its surposed to be a big pointy stick)
0-20 meters Pistols (accuracy after 20m should drop steeply, and 30m should be impossible to hit a moveing target)
3-60 meters Carbines
2-50 meters Ranger BOW (personaly i think 30m should be max range on this but current camo and aggro ranges need sorting)
5-125 meters Rifles
most of the commando weapons should be 5-50 meters range as they are surposed to be close support fighters.
Probably not a popular post as it goes against the thread, but don't see the bow as the weapon of a high-tech ranger, who uses force field generating high tech camps (well at least if you look at the graphics), high tech camoflauge and electronic traps etc.
We do need moe clout in combat though; for instance taking the fairly useless +25 accuracy bonus that we get currently get to base range attacks only and make it apply to:
- Specials
- Melee attacks
- Ranged accuracy whilst moving.
Some defences so we dont instantly disintegrate if a critter does get to us (again mainly a problem for higher level critters that are immune to traps andstate effects and can keep up with burst run) would also be nice, but no holding my breath for any of these.

I like the idea of a ranger specific weapon, but the WS should craft it... not us
Reading through this discussion and the different ideas for damage types, I keep flashing back to the comic book hero Green Arrow and his slew of special arrows (i.e. Net arrows, gas Arrows, boomarang arrows, bolo arrows, etc, etc, etc....). I just hope we don't have to wear green tights if we get the bow. LOL
I understand we want something to set us apart, something that is uniquely ours, but I'm not sure the bow is it. But it's better than anything I've thought of lately. Part of the problem with us finding and fitting into a role is we practise a craft that at this time and place should be non-existant. Synthetics should have all but replaced naturally harvested materials. Droids and Starships full of sensors should be able to track anything almost anywhere. We are very much antediluvian in the SWG universe.
Maybe if there were certain areas where technology didn't work as well, or at all, we would find ourselves of more use?

If we were to get something like this, it should be a Weaponsmith who crafts it. Rangers, while self sufficient, cant really make complex weapons.

First of all, a bow is not a complex weapon.... that's the point.... the only two simpler weapons are (1) a rock or (2) a pointed stick. Why not say, only archetects can make camps (or field bases.... having archs make field bases is as, if not more, reasonable than having WS make bows).
Second, I like the idea.... add POISON arrows..... dip your arrowtips in some loot that drops from a posionous animal..... get health posion arrows, action posion arrows, and mind poison arrows.... that would be kinda cool.
