Thread: Getting trapping XP

Ok, so help me, I need to master Ranger (yes, I'm one of those dreaded hologrinders, sorry), I want to get it out of the way so I can get Doc back (Doc is the profession I chose to play, it wasn't a holo prof).

Now I'm just wondering the best traps to use (still a scout at the moment, I've got all the other trees filled, but lacking traps), and about the only thing I could hit consistently with the things was bloody Durnis (after trying repeatedly on bigger mobs).

Now, can anyone give me any insights as to what traps I should be using and on what mobs to try to maximise xp gain in trapping ? I suppose I could buff myself and just throw wire mesh traps at durnis for the next fortnight, but there has to be a better way

As you fill the boxes, you get better.

My suggestion - Go to an adventure planet. Find a group and tell them you need trapping xp, that's all you will be doing. If you don't shoot, you don't mess with their XP, and you can still harvest. Throw as many traps as you can at each target. The bigger the mob, the more xp you get. Works for many people.

Of course, you can try and trap about a million durni, that would work just as well.

But seeing as how this is the start of Operation Kill all Rasps. Go trap them. More XP than durni, and they are a social blight.

Well I have a bunch of mates I go hunting with and we kill everything from Sharnaffs to Rancors, but the problem I found last night was I couldn't hit ANYTHING. Constant trap fails, at what level should I be expecting to hit say Seething Bols and Voritors reliably ? and what traps should I be using on them ?

I feel your rasp pain, I shall do my best to rid us of this vermin tonight

What I did to gain trapping xp was go to Tatooine, and craft a ton of traps, I got myself buffed and found the giant worts, the big ugly bug-eyed frog things that aggro you.

anyway, each hit was about 120 xp and within 30 minutes I went from trapping 2 to trapping 4.

this is the fastest way i think, once you hit ranger, the creatures you can hit get progressively better depending on your skill

I've had a lot of luck with wire mesh traps. Give em a try. They seem to work almost every time so you get a lot of xp. Pick up 4-5 crates of em and go nuts. Other bombs I've had much much much less success with.

I dont think trap success has anything to do with the traps.. but your +trapping skills.

Advanced planets are nice, but if only 1 out of 10 traps tossed sticks, then its a waste of time. You will have to experiment with different MOBs as you move up the tree.

You don't even have to group with people.. just start tossing traps at MOBs when you see people hunting.. as long as there is no one else doing it, you will be helping them and not hurting them. You won't get in there way and they will thank you for the assistance. I still do that now.. I am running along and see some dude standing toe-to-toe with a pickett ... "Need any help?" "Naww, I got it" but I toss a few traps in there anyway. I get big Thank You's all the time and its really quite fun helping.

It's pretty dumb considering the mechanics of it, the glow juice trap basically consists of a canister of glowing paint you throw at something so it's easier to see, quite how you can fail to have a trap affect the target is beyond me - especially if the target is something the size ofa piket or sharnaff, I mean what happened ? Did I miss ? I can hit a durni from the same distance, why can't I hit something that size ?

Anyway, factory is churning out crates of the things.

Well, in my experience going up the trapping tree, I tend to land maybe 1 out of every 2 stink bombs, but probably 3 out of every 4 wire mesh traps, something like that. I've never kept statistics, but no question there is a big difference.

I hope I dont insult anyone's intelligence.. but you do all know that if something is already affected by a certain kind of trap, then throwing the same kind of trap at it is pointless until the effects of the previous wears off.. don't you?
i.e. if something is snared or stunned.. trying to stun or snare it again is going to fail 100% of the time

I only say this because I have hunted with some folks that just throw traps like crazy with no regard for what state effects are already on the animal.

Did trapping over the weekend, just took me an few hours, I was watching football while doing it, so not very efficient.

Basically, I got a doctor buff, made 20 sets of wire mesh traps, put them all on hotkeys, went to Dant., tookpiket missions, killed 3/4 of the initial spawn and sat there and let the last piket hit me while I emptied my inventory at it. Buffs kept me alive while tossing traps and each set of traps gave about 25k xp.

Just sharing the info to help other along. /putsonflameretardant clothing

Since I'm mastering ranger for my holo, all I can say it scout trapping is a little annoying because you tend to fail alot, but I was hunting zucca boars on tat with my cupa, and was getting ok xp from them for each trap. Once you hit ranger, head to dath and hunt rancors. I was getting 787 xp per trap from the normal rancors, and over 1500 for enraged rancors. that's 1500 per trap. needless to say, I maxxed trapping quickly. On top of that, you get as much scout exp from a rancor as you do from one trap. so that mean 1500 scout xp per enraged rancor. Ofcourse, I'd recommend groupping with a master ranger while you are out, because you will max out your skills quickly on rancor hunts.

Sorry, but you are partially wrong. There are three types of traps that can be used over and over and over again:

  • Wire Mesh

  • Glow Juice

  • Glow Wire

You can hit something with a glow wire10 times in a row, throwing them as fast as you can, and probably get 7 or 8 of the 10 to stick. But aside from those three traps, you are correct - the others will only stick if the effect from the last time you threw it has worn off.
