The Hunting Terminal

(or making explorer terminals work)

Issue: Current Explorer Terminals do not give the user much more than an impossible task. When taking a mission from these terminals a rare creature type is (seemingly) arbitrarily named and given a value, finding any number of this rare creature type has proven difficult to even the most accomplished Master Rangers.

Issue: Mission terminals (which yield a waypoint and spawn site) on many planets default to NPC types at higher combat types. For the Master Ranger / Master Combatant this means that using mission terminals, more often than not, will result in missions for NPC types like Selonians, Mokks, Ewoks etc. The result leaves Rangers, a PvE class, stuck sifting through dozens of pages of missions just to find a viable creature mission.

Issue: Mission terminals do not give rangers "good" assignments. Most creature missions are FAR below the rangers current combat abilities and thus relatively worthless in providing decent harvests.

Issue: AreaTrack, though effective as basically a form of binoculars, does not aid the Ranger in finding rare (high Creature Resource yield) creatures. It's value is simply a sense of the surroundings.

Proposal: Augment the current implementation of the Explorer Terminals to work as follows:

  1. Only Scouts and Rangers have the ability to use these terminals (like BH terms and spynet operatives)

  2. Leave the mission assigments as they are (same requirements, same creatures, same pay)

  3. Upon taking one of these missions the player is given a starting location. The server then randomly generates alair of that creature type within 500m of that location. Using AreaTrack or physically scouting the area will reveal the location of this lair. It should not appear on the map... it should just be a forced spawn.

  4. The Ranger / Scout must then engage the lair tomove towardstheirquota (15, 30, 45, whatever).

  5. Upon completion of eachlair a newlair is spawned within 500m of the previous one, or the original site. Up to 3 lairs of this type will be spawned / mission to allow the ranger to reach their quota.

Result: Explorer terminals regain a more prominent stature in the Ranger and Scout community.

Result: AreaTrack gains a more concrete value in game.

Result: Rangers have a bonus for finding better creatures to give higher yields built into the game system (rather than directly into the class). It is my feeling that the ranger bonus to harvesting really shines through on higher level creatures. A +50% of 15 units isnegligable compared toa +50% of 150 units.

note: These terminals should remain creature oriented and should give rangers and scouts a slight bonus from their current rating to allow them to target spawns which had higher resource yields. There is nothing more frustrating than going to a terminal and getting a mission for dwarf gronda's when you know you can kill those using your weakest weapon and writing a post on the forum.

Hope you all like it.

I like the idea, But it might be better to make it a "Big game" terminal. some "boss" type creature you need to hunt track, and take down.

Like a bounty hunter terminal?

High end BH missions are for Jedi... High end Ranger missions are for Krayts?

That'd be cool... right now I'm just thinking baby steps though.

Yup. I like the "big game" version of the terminal.

I'm working on updating the Outdoorsman proposal right now and this is my version of the mission after gettng some imput:

To add versatility to the explorer terminals, this could just be put onto those terminals.

At novice Ranger, a third tab becomes accessible on the Explorer terminals: Big Game Hunting. The missions would follow a similar format to the BH terminal. At level one, they function almost exaclty like low-level BH missions. You are asked to find a NPC contact who tells you the general direction that you should go. At this level, the creature moves very little and you are forced to fight the high-end creature. These creatures would be VERY rare creatures. It would be nice if we got new creatures to hunt, but that's besides the point.

At Hunting II, you open up larger/longer hunting missions. These creatures are fairly high levels and move around. The contact will give you a town where the creature was last seen (i.e. last seen northeast ofkaadara). You would have to get there and use /areatrack to find the creature. The creature would be limited in speed so that it wouldn't move out of the /areatrack range too fast. However, if you can't find the creature, every city would have a static NPC "hunter" like the BH's spynet ops. The hunters would have unique text: "Well, you'd better move fast son. I have half a mind to head over this way to find the creature myself." Something like that. These would give updates to the creatures location (I'd prefer not to have a waypoint, but that's up to the community at large). So if the target has continued to move away from the city, you'll at least know what direction to go n.

At Master Ranger, you get interplanetary hunting missions. high level, rare creatures that you may need a friend to bring down. At this level, you're given only a general area. "He's in the Eastern Dune Seas". Congruently, Master Rangers should get a larger areatrack range. This would be a tough mission, but they'd have high payoffs. The fact that the creature cannot be tracked with droids make it harder to find, so that's the largest problem with these missions; a mobile target in a large range. That would justif the larger payout.

Of course, you couldn't just have it be a "vicious wrix" name or something like that, because then which one would you kill? In this regard, the creatures wouldn't have regular names. They'd be "vicious creature" "rabid animal"or something like that. Another cool thing would be if there were unique creatures Rangers could only get the missions for and they had loot. Ranger-only loot would be nice. Perhaps it wouldn't be anything too big or too cool so as to not make us some sort of rare loot collectors, but if they don't want to give us taxidermy, perhaps we could "loot" certain skulls of these Ranger-unique critters.

i have to work out the details, but this is the general idea.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

Why cant both ideas be implemented. Afterall....its nothing more than a search form for a database albeit with a pretty face. Just add a tab for boss creatures or big game.

I like this idea. I have always said that HUNTER should be an elite profession unto itself, an outgrowth of scout.

I like it (even if I personally think that this functionality should be given by /track, not by the terminal). I'm not too big a fan of a big game version of this terminal. I would say that /track should fill that role. The big game should be the reward for itself, not any reward a terminal might give. Even if I think it would be a ton of fun to have missions like that (although turning /track into something like that might be fun, with multi planet stuff coming in just by knowing where the creature should be).

Track CAN fill this role also...it just wont payout like the terminal does and allows us to stay out in the wilds instead of trucking back in to the terminal. And maybe.....just maybe...they will make the HTFB terminal work too.....
