Thread: Ranger as a businessman Has no one done this?
The Antarian Rangers on Valcyn have also been doing this for about a month or so. It's a pretty profitable business for us.
Kharr Khomak
Master Ranger
Master Creature Handler
Pretty similar to what my partners and I do, although we throw in resource mining to add to the profit ![]()
Between the three of us, we can pull in a very large amount of a given resource in a short period of time. We all play on a semi-limited schedule, usually about 3 hours a night. The last good Endorian wooly shift on our server saw two of us gathering 30k of the stuff in 2 nights. When the person buying this stuff is offering 35 or 40 cpu, that's a nice little profit.
Yes, there are serious opportunities to bring in cash as a ranger/scout. You just have to go after the stuff that's good. SWGCraft.com can be a very valuable resource if the people on your server keep the stats updated. And the galaxy trade forums are a good place to check to see what's in demand. Once you can survive on the advanced planets and hunt effectively, you can really bring in the harvests.

I started playing about 5 months ago, and while all my other RL friends chose professions like commando, TK, and swordsman - I thought that ranger was the most appealing. Over time they changed to being miners, architects, and other money generating professions. I was stuck poor trying to find hunting groups that could help me gather organics as 2/0/1/2 rifleman wasn't that solo efficient. In fact the only real money I ever made was when you could still solo pubam lairs by burst running circles around them then running from the pubams. (before the lair hp patch)
Anyway I quit for a while, frustrated at being poor and just bored.
I came back a few weeks ago with a business plan and some rich friends to help invest with my project. The idea was simple .. gather a few other master rangers and go to town on the best organic in the current shift. From there I've come up with many other ideas.
Why wasn't anyone doing this? Most rangers I knew were gathering solo or on hunting trips for their PA docs, armorsmiths etc. Yet there is such a HUGE demand for organics and so little supply (at least on starsider it seems this way.)
Basically the business is structured like this:
- The core group -
This is the group that goes out almost every night, stockpiling whatever is the current best resource available. Eventually I hope to have 2 or 3 of these going after avian, wooly, herbivore etc all at once.
- Soloists group -
PA members, people who play in their spare time, etc. I email them whats currently best in our galaxy and they can offer it to my vendors (up soon) whenever they want.
From these groups I have planet reps who check for resource shifts daily, look for tipoffs on whats available, etc on every planet.
Everyone is an equal partner, and this is not a PA. Its not faction specific (however if there are ever problems it will become reb/neutral only) Everyone gets 100% profit on what they bring in. While I am the leader I get no special perks, I merely organize and manage our customer contacts and look for more people for the group.
I plan on making enough contacts to have group perks such as free buffs for all members, crates of foods or drugs (pick your poison) available for free and other things in the works. So far I haven't had to charge a membership fee and even if theres only two of us working on a given night we both make over 100k.
And finally as far as sales go its somewhat of a first come first serve basis. I'm already getting constant tells of orders for 20k, 50k, 100k avian meat and can't keep up with it. I use volsted's pricing guide, and only add 1.5x or 2.5x modifiers if its hard to get stuff (like the talus avian currently available ... good 'ol song rasps, fynocks and gulginaws lol) At this point it looks like I'm going to have to set up auctions between doctors, I simply can't get enough for them.
Anyway I'm not trying to sound like some genius businessman, I just wanted to share my currently working business model. There are probably people doing this, but I've seen nothing of the sort on starsider. And most importantly it makes ranger fun. If you're on starsider and are interested, whether it be as a ranger or a customer ... send me a tell or email anytime.
Oh and as of right now the business name is "Rangers Organics Collective" - ROC. lol.
Our AR group each have out own businesses but we support each other. We go out and hunt together and if anyone is short on an order while the rest have an over abundance, we help that member complete his order. We are Rangers....not mercenaries...so there is no reeason why we should be cuthroat and even more reason why we should support each other.
Welcome back by the way.
I have been doing this on a guild only basis for a while. If any guildies need it, they get it, either free (for future consideration) or at minimal costs, like to cover my bus tickets to the other planets.
I also have harvestors. I sell this stuff or give it to guildies.
End result, a lot of money in the bank, more than I can currently spend.
And this is working alone mind you, and not doing it full time, nor advertising.

If I were on Starsider, I would be with you in a second. Congrats.
This is a very nice business plan you have going, if I knew of such a thing on ahazi i would join in ![]()
I have only recently begun paying attention to where the better resources are and what is in demand and while much of my harvests go to the guild for free (well, in exchange for free heals and buffs :smileyhappy
i can sell the rest easily. For the first time since the game started i can actually see myself maybe having more than 10k on me at a time. Truth is, i never really cared that much since i only need money for weapons and travel, anything else is a bonus.
Life is good ![]()
I've done this on Corbantis with my business O'Reilly's Organics and am doing very well. In fact, as ironic as this sounds, I gave up all my ranger boxes (was a Master), took up Merchant skills for the vendors and I'm just as good a hunter now as I ever was as a Ranger AND I have the ability to run my own business and supplement the hides/bone/meats with organic flora.
Makes you wonder which Ranger skill it is that actually helps you as a hunter doesn't it?
"Makes you wonder which Ranger skill it is that actually helps you as a hunter doesn't it?"
The one that does not exist yet... Yes... That one. ![]()
Aye, I do business usually alone. My guild leader/mayor/friend has scout skills and harvests what he kills and passes it along to me, as he won't ever use his extra materials. I thank him for the help.
Seeing as I'm a loner Master Ranger, just a guild man out on his own a lot, I sell to usual buyers if I find them or if it's just not good to whoever I can. I'm not in need of cash as much anymore so I just harvest large quanity, set a price and sell to whoever /tells when I advertise. Nowadays it's easy to sell it to either hologrinders or master docs. Meat-wise. I sold under like 20k of hide/meat a few days back for 101k.
All comes down to what you're willing to do. If I visit a planet that is soloable, I'll harvest at least a few k just to sell it later, but it all depends on what free time you've got. Things come up, you've got to travel around, still manage to sell what I don't use on the bazaar for 3pu. All in all, if you're in it for the money, follow the shifts and find out what is best when it's best and grind-grind-grind till you can't grins no more. I'm unable to do that, but if you can, go for it.
Thehermit Rangers out there can make just as much money as the cooperative groupedRangers in time. ![]()
I hunt with a core group of friends; while I'm the only ranger, the others have at least novice scout. Once we hear of a great spawn (Naboo avian was the latest), we jump on it and start stockpiling. After collecting everyone's share of meat or hide, I then sell it to those offering the most cpu. I then tip the rest of the group, equitably sharing the profits. This system works very well for us.
Currently, I have over 500k in the bank. I would have more, but I'm now the primary investor in a start-up tailoring enterprise (read: my secondary character).
I'll be dropping to 0/0/4/0 ranger soon tsion. While I still have hope for the profession, and plan on getting master back right away if there are any positive changes, its just not worth it right now. Last night a master BE asked me to accompany him trying to sample kimo's, ie .. to conceal him .. he had camo BE clothes on and everything .. and it broke right after I put it on him 4 times. I know they're kimo's, but the thing is he then just maskscented himself and got 2 samples.
Fun stuff.
