Thread: Here's how slow the Frontiering tree is...

Saturday I activated my 2nd holocron -- Master Tailor. I'd just finished Musician, Dancer and Entertainer, and decided to become a Ranger again. I'd been a Ranger before, but dumped it in protest after the Mask Scent nerf a few months back.

I went to the Ranger trainer in Coronet, and trained back up to Ranger 1101 using the excess XP I had left over from before. I then crafted a couple of high-quality camps and started my Tailor grind while sitting in camp. I replaced the camps every 20 minutes, and crafted a replacement camp each time I set a new one. When I reached Frontiering2 I replaced the high-quality camps with field camps. I even logged my brother's account to sit in the camp with me for additional XP, and to train my Tailor advancement (ashe's Master Tailor).

Here's where things get wonky. I managed to grind the entire Tailor profession -- including the Artisan requirements -- in the time it took me to advance all the way through Frontiering 2 and midway through Frontiering 3.

Think about it. That's an entire elite crafting profession, and its starting profession requirements -- a total of 848,900 general and Tailor crafing XP -- in the same amount of time as it took me to advance 70K through the Ranger's camping tree.

Either Tailor's too easy to grind, or the Ranger's Frontiering tree is too slow. I'm not sure which.

Apologies for this appearing twice. The first time I submitted it the Forum cleared the editing box and left me on the editing page. Sigh.

Wow. All I can say to that is congrats. I grinded fieldwear 2 just so my armorsmith toon could make panels. I found that grind to be the worst one yet. And you did it sitting in camps. Congrats again.

What's funny to me is both your approach, and your comparison.

First off, a little background. I have one toon who is a tailor, and then me, I'm a former master ranger. The tailor tree takes a long time if you "play" as a tailor. I did some grinding (no macros), but mostly just played, and it took me 2 months to reach master tailor. I can honestly say that I had every bit as much fun as a novice than I have (6 months later) as still a master tailor so I was in no huge hurry, but it was my only toon then, so I worked at it a *lot*. There's also nothing I hate worse then people who used macros and such belly-aching about how "easy" it is to become a master tailor But that's a topic for another discussion.

Then I made this toon for variety, and play this one kind of "secondarily", but just in the normal course of hunting, I was able to reach master ranger also in two months. The only difference was that I had the other 3 sub-branches done within a few weeks of just hunting, and to get that pain in the butt frontiering tree I had to do a lot of fishing, and camping every time I had a hang-nail that needed attending to.

The punchline of all this though is that you seem to have gotten very good at grinding in practice mode. You must be very efficient at it. However, you've failed to realize that the frontiering branch can also be ground out in the exact same manner that you used to reach tailor. That's right, you can use your macros to craft tents in practice mode and rocket up that tree also provided you are sufficiently bored and have sufficient resources to do so. Heck, if you try hard enough you might be able to craft tents while in camp, and fishing, rofl.

So honestly, as one who has done both, I think advancing in tailor is a *lot* more time consuming than advancing in ranger. If you just "play" both, you'll master ranger first, no question. If you grind both using the "best" methods available, you'll also get master ranger first also, no question. If you grind tailor very efficiently, and ranger very inefficiently, well, there you're on your own.

If you still need to finish off the Frontiering tree, you should grind it out on camps. Especially since you must have a high tolerance for grinding! Grinding camps is the fastest way through.

Thanks devs, now you can grind/play frontiering by crafting camps (and traps by the way).

Old-timers remember that originally the only way to get through frontiering was to actually sit through the camps, preferrably with a group. Good luck soloing.

Although tailoring was also different - there was no practice mode originally, you had to periodically dispose of what you crafted. So no way you could run macro unattended for long time, you would fill in your inventory space pretty quick.

Just remembering "good ol' times"

I'm probably going to be a copout and grind frontiering when I get back to master. But at least I did it once the proper way. I think that entitles me

Yes, Frontiering is slow. I started Novice Scout and Novice Brawler at the same time and was sure I would be a Master Ranger way before mastering Teras Kasi. I had been using a camp just whenever I needed to heal myself or others. Now that I have Meditate 4 (TK) I don't even need the camps to heal in, so I guess I'll have to just sit in the camps for the last 7k of xp I need. Seems like a waste.

Ok, now I'm pissed.

I was sitting my camp while I wrote my last post above and disbanded after 39 minutes and all I got was 140 xp! **edit**! I will never be anle to get 7k xp at that f---in' rate.

7k?

That's nuthin. Seriously. Craft camps in practice mode while camping. ~100xp per camp.

I did Frontiering 4 in 3 days (about 6 hours total).

As you progress, make sure you start camping in the higher level camps. You'll get there quicker camping in a Field Base camp, rather than a Basic camp.

Good luck.
