Thread: mounts and rangers

classic rpg always had the mount skill as something the ranger was just good at. Sure you could have your mage summon up a floating disk to throw yer loot on, and your animist could summon wolves to attack stuff, but ranger was the guy who got the horses.

Who all here thinks that rangers should get, and by get I mean become useful, the /mount command? All of the supposed mount animals are BE craftable, and and all but 1 (dewback) are Non CH tamable. Put the skill in wayfaring, its our travelling skill after all.

**edit** no edit....

Anyways, maybe rangers could have the ability to ride any mount and have some sort of bonus. We could leave the taming to the creature handlers, and would have to buy the animals from them, but would still have an advantage over non-rangers. Also a bonus to riding would cool, like +20 Mount Speed.

Actually, this brings up something I've been wondering about--what good is terrain negotiation if everyone can ride a fast mount? It's great that everyone will now be (more) able to venture far from civilization, but wasn't that the ranger's purpose?I hope that the devs use terrain negotian skill as a factor in how fast a mount can travel.

I think if a Ranger is the leader or maybe even in your group you should benefit from his terrain negotiation. After all you can show them the easy routes up a mountain and what not. Even give the scouts this ability but Rangers would even be better at it.

This is a rather odd thread as everyone will be able to use mounts.

From the Stratics Dev Chat:

Blair - Will you have to be a creature handler to have a mount.
Blair - NO!

Yeah, but what I think is being gotten at NRass is that Rangers are supposed to be the ones with the terrain abilities, the speed, the power, etc. Hopefully we'll get a bonus when we are using mounts?

"Hopefully we'll get a bonus when we are using mounts?"

That would be sweet....

The problem is we have little information on how mounts will be implemented.

  • It is quite possible that climbing speed of the mount will be based on Terrain Negotiation as well.

Other than climbing speed, what are we losing with the addition of mounts?

It would be nice to have a bonus for using mounts... But what would that bonus be?

all of these are wonderful pipedreams, but the facts have shown that the rangers get screwed all the time, terrain negotiation should be far more advantagous to rangers, rangers traps and camo should WORK EFFECTIVELY AND PROPERLY, the camps should be better, the areatrack should be more effective, they should have agreater benefits against creatures, should have an innate advantage overall non-chplayers with handling animals, hell we can find out things about creatures teh creature handlers cant b4 taming. I bet having mounts will simply screw over the ranger prof even more because they NEVER think about that prof until later, and YES creature mounting should be a ranger skill, but instead they're going to give it to CH which already has a wonderful cashcow thru selling pets, so i wouldnt be too hopeful. ok, now to put out all these flames...

Yes, it is kind of worrying that our terrain negotiation is made less useful if everyone can move at burstrun speed.

Can our dear correspondent check if there's anything being considered for rangers in this department please?

"How about the ability to use special attacks while mounted?"

Interesting...

It may be the case that they are limiting special moves to givean advantage to the unmounted player.

  • And giving them to us may be far too unbalancing...

----

I will note it...

Though I'm apt to wait until they release the initial version of mounts, before pestering the developers on something we know nothing about.
