Thread: The Camp Question...
Alright, we've been at this awhile now...
Modular camps:
I get the feeling that we'll never reach a satisfactory conclusion within any reasonable amount of time. And even if we did push for the modular camp system, we would need the backing of the other two professions involved.
So my questions for this thread:
Is the modular camp proposal too ambitious to push at this time?
Would pushing for this plan simply overpower all the other requests on the table?
What is your boggle?

Ok... But can we pull it together by next week though? With support from Scout and Squad Leader?
I would like to have this proposal signed, sealed, and in the developers in-box by early next week.
Give me the skinny people. Should we do this? Can we do this?
I think we should have a serious priority check here and Modular Camps would be at the bottom of my list of everything I have seen in Nraas' Outdoorsman document.
"Ok... But can we pull it together by next week though? With support from Scout and Squad Leader?"
I would think the Scouts would be ecstatic. The Squad Leaders are another story depending on really only one thing. Frankly Machs and myself, as near as I can tell, are two of thelone voices opposed to the modular camp proposal as it exists now, i.e. giving the Squad Leaders the Fortifications mentioned. To me it basically gives them Frontiering I-IV with no effort whatsoever. I am adamantly opposed to this, as I stated in the modular camp thread.
However, if Machs and I are the only dissenting opinions on this, Icannot possibly see what objections they (the SL's) could have. N'Raas has done almost all of the work on one of their major proposals by himself. If the majority of the Ranger community is for the modular camp proposal as is, it should have no problem gaining the support of the others. Finally tweaking on the proposal as is could be wrapped up by the end of the weekend. There only seem to be a few differing opinions on the proposal itself which we should be able to work through.
Thoughts?
Now that I actually got around to reading the modular camp thread(Now I wish I did much sooner) I would have to say no. The only thing lacking in the camp department is fixing the current bugs ( Camps not repelling agressive creatures as they should, things ofthat nature) and giving the Ranger the ability to fight or leavethe camp without it disappearing.
For field base kits I agree with the popular idea, that they should be quasi permanent. As log as the ranger doesn't log off or disband the camp it should stay put. These are bases, why can't you leave and come back? With the camp being quasi permanent, the ranger will not be able to deploy another camp until he disbands his current one. I mean really, camps aren't very broken to start off with. For a lot of rangers, just being able to fight, and leave a camp without it disbanding would be perfect.
So once again to recap, no modular camps. You're trying to create a co-dependence between professions. A ranger should be able to create a camp to repel aggressive creatures. Who else knows creatures better than a ranger? Certainly not Squad Leaders. So why should Squad Leaders be able to deploy reinforcents and things to help protect the base from aggressive creatures?Just doesn't make sense.
I like the idea, but I don't think we have enough of a consensus to be giving something this big to the devs by next week. We still aren't sure exactly what we want. Once we've really decided, you have to figure that the SL forum is going to need at least a week to come up with their own suggestions. Then we'd have to argue with them for a while longer than that to hammer out the details. After that, NRaas would need another few days to write the proposal, which we would have to review ourselves for another couple days. Realistically, we need at least 3 more weeks to pull it off properly. We're asking for the total redesign of 12 skill boxes and an entire game mechanic.
Just my opinion.
One suggestion for Camps may be to make it so that vehicles can only be launched from ranger 'field bases' and not scout camps. As is, any entry level scout can launch vehicles, which is just one more thing that could be special for rangers that is taken away because the scout can do it.
Another suggestion is for the devs simply to increase the timer on caps so they stay longer. I do not need them to be permanent, as I do not stand in once place for a day at a time. I may however hunt in an area for an hour at a time, and an hour long timer on a high tech field base would be nice and seemingly easy to code, just changing a timer.
I think the other classes would definately be on board, if anything they may say we aren't giving them enough.
It is very ambitious? yes. but unattainable? NO. I just read Thunderhearts post on the comming combat revamp and part four of it is more definition to the different professions. He used the words "flesh out the professions." it sounds like the devs have large ambitious plans themselves. They sounded like professions won't get attention till the other things like combat and ham changes do so we are looking at 2-3 months till they are ready to "flesh" out the professions.
So it looks like we can do one of two things, give them nothing right now, and wait to spring this more ambitious plan when they are ready for it. OR give them all of this now with the notion that we are patient and don't expect it all now, but we hope to have it all eventually. And we will continue to tweak it and mold it until they are ready for us.
I vote for the second. that way they know that we know what we want, and we know that we will wait as long as it takes for them to give it to us as long as they can agree that it is possible. The can go on fixing their weapons and combat system and when they are ready they'll already have an idea of what to expect from us.
The module camp system that you have outlined is very good in my opinion. I have resolved my issues with a few of it's origonal points and I think that we should definately work with what you have layed out rather than scratch it and start over.
"He used the words "flesh out the professions." it sounds like the devs have large ambitious plans themselves."
Now you understand why I am pushing for this to be complete very quickly.
- If we aren't quick on the ball, we'll end up with whatever the developers have decided to do.
Mind you, I am sure it will be amazing (I wouldn't expect anything less)...
- But we should make sure they understand our position before they go too far down their path.
Why include anything for squad leaders?
Cannot rangers be viewed as the stealthy vanguardforce that sets up fortifications for others, including the squad leader and his group, to move into on a battlefield?
Rangers are already the masters of field construction - we have camps. That does not mean we should be limited to just hokey tents. Why not small fortifications...
I guess I'm in the camp that doesnt feel like sharing this important skill (field construction) and see the ranger skills even further diluted by similar skills being in other classes.
