Thread: Ranger Only Zones

Ok from the last thread hearing people’s ideas on how they would like the ranger profession to develop I brushed on the possible implementation of profession specific zones. In this post I’m just going to brainstorm on some possible designs that could be interesting to many professions but in detail on the ranger zone.

I have many different ideas on how these zones could be designed, all of which will be equally as fun but they just vary in the way they are set up and designed.

Most professions are now debating the ideas of zones and areas where either only their profession can access or an area where their profession excels. It is obvious to me that playing to this interest within the community could be beneficial on many levels: Added content to explore, something only a certain profession can access making it a unique experience, providing a meeting place for like minded individuals to talk, trade and even fight.

Restricting access to these zones/areas has a great effect of providing the professions with unique experiences and something that rewards the player ‘after’ he/she has mastered.

These zones would effectively be only open to you if you have novice or above in your profession with different areas within these zones available depending on your progression. You can imagine for yourself the various areas that become available to you as you progress through the tree and the obvious benefits a meeting place has for young apprentices to our respective profession. They can receive advise from the elders of our community and training all in one area.

Extra possible content within these areas could be quest givers, player databases, vendors and even possible housing zones. The Jedi’s get their enclave for protection, meeting areas and extra content. I don’t see why other professions shouldn’t have this type of content available to them.

Discusion point:

Obviously creating a different zone for each profession is an imense task and would not be undertaken however if certain professions were grouped together into one zone then within that zone there are different 'specific areas that where profession related, it would make things alot easier and would perhaps even compliment the community in the 'zone'.

The sort of groupings i was thinking of are like:

Rangers

Scouts

Creature Handlers

You would need to be one of these 3 to access the 'zone' then after that be novice of above in a profession to access it's 'area'.

What do you guys think of this point first?

After ive got some feedback on this point ill add some stuff about possible design of the zones and areas.

In concept I really like the idea. I don't think it is a fair one unfortunately. I could see an area (or an entire planet) where speeders did not work due to atmospheric interfearance, was a tought climb, etc. That would not force the area to Rangers only, but non-rangers might not like it there very much

I like the idea. What about in our case needing to mask scent to get into the scout area and needing to use areatrack to get into the ranger area? I don't know enough about CH to have ideas for that. It would have to be something only a creature handler can do. I think for ease of coding and server load there should only be 1 area for each profession per server. How about trainers giving a clue to help finding the area. Then you get a little something the first time you find it? New skill for a CH, a new area affect trap for rangers, and a piece of clothing with a terrain negotiating skill bonus for scout? Something small and useful for the no-longer-novice, but not too powerful.

I was really inspired by the idea of a 'small forest moon', frequented by outdoors types. A haven for endangered species, any illegal hunters there gain a TEF which means the lands protectors (aka us) can punish their evil ways. Obviously any hunting done by us would be culling the over population .

Seriously though, the ideas piqued my interest, i'll promise to give it some serious thought and not just post some random stupidness.

Good ideas yeah. The zones i was talking about though are NOT planey wide combat areas or anything like that. More like the odd cave here and there where only a certain set of professions can get into.

Something more like a meeting place or hang out place for people in the same profession.

Ive gone into some detail on trying to justify putting these zones or areas in existing towns. Maybe the 'hunting lodge'in a large building inmos espa.

You wouldneed to be scout/ranger/ch to get into this building (maybe through skill means such as camo etc).It means you can hang out with people with similar play styles anddiscuss current events. Within this building then you would have the option to go into your individual zones.

The ranger one for example could be:

Within the hunting lodge you walk down a dark coridoor to a lift area. You enter the lift and if you are ranger you can select to descent to the Ranger Meeting Area.

Once youve used the lift you exit into a large very brightly lit underground cavern used as a habbitat facility, filled with large trees, vines, rocks and non attackable animals. This zone is very beuitiful and has a small pond on the ground with tents on the little beach and chairs so you can sit and chat or rest up. To the left of the facility theres a ramp leading up to an overhead raised walkway. The walkway leeds you on a walk through the trees and through thick jungle type areas over to a make shift, raised open air cantina. There are seats, sofas, tables, quest givers and various npc hunters around.

Obviously im just letting my mind run wild but you get the idea. I wish i was great at art so i could make an image of how i see this paradise lost underground area i have in my head.

Basically the zone (like a building in Mos Espa) would lead you to an area only your profession could access so you can meet up with fellow rangers or scouts, discuss things, prepare for hunts, take ranger questsand generally chill out with your ranger friends.

hehe i cant wait to hear your ideas arillonahe

Ive gotton realy interested in this of even a small area within a city, such as a building could be made so fellow rangers could meet up. Similar to the hunting lodge in KotoR in anchorhead, tatooine.

I like the idea! It might be nice if we were the leader of a group (not just in the group, but the actual leader) we could bring them in? I suppose it would be unnecessary since what you describe would be just a resting place, but ifthe Devs were to do a Ranger-only dungeon or planetary zone, maybe we could bring a group with us?

How about this:

Similar to the DWB, where you need a Tailor/ DE/ Armorsmith to accomplish a task:

The Hunting Expedition
Profession Requirements:
Master Ranger
Master Squad Leader
Master Creature Handler

There are rumors and whispers of a dangerous area in a small uninhabited moon. Here, some of the largest toughest creatures are roaming wild. Normally this is not a problem, however, poachers, smugglers and other criminals are interfering with the area and its up to the adventurers to bring the poachers/ smugglers to justice.

Rewards:
New and deadly baby animals for CH's
Schematic for a Ranger Specific Weapon
Schematic for deadly and vicious traps
Integrated Armor Com-Link SEA/ Schematic for Squad Leaders that add great bonuses to their abilities.
Rare and Valuable Armor/ Weap/ Jedi Components

Opponents
Original and Nasty Critters
(Ancient Sarlaac pit, who reproduces by sending spores out into space, landing in places such as Tat, and Dath)
Nasty NPC Poachers
(Drop Trap Launcher components... Unique Armor, Weapons)
Environmental Hazards
Quicksand

Owen if you want I can easily sketch you a drawing of that idea you had. I especially dig the beach and raised openair cantina. I don't know how to draw on a puter but I can do a good 3d pencil sketch and then scan and email it.

calc...

thats what i came up with in 3 minutes, would you like an expansion? and a new posting... I think this idea of a Ranger Zone is worth developing.

(it may be futile, but still fun)
