I am a CH who will hopfully be labeled a collecter by the Humane Societyof Tatooine one day. Also I am working up the Ranger tree for so I can find really nasty critters and yet not be eaten by them, well not until I foolishly begin shooting at them. And it hit me, "Why am I the only person with pistoleer as my combat profession?" Have Icondemned myself to a life of being stomped on and helplessly running away from the uber beasts while the rest of the ranger/CH community snipes from the comfort of their camps or bashes skulls with their ultra power hammer 3000's{ or whatever they're called ;-) }. I have a thick skull myself that is why it has taken me so long to realize that my pistol has limited damage potential compared with other weapons and requiresme toget really close to hit my mark. Maybe I am not looking at this the right way, but should I got back to basics and learn another combat profession? Cause I really love taming baby squills, just not being gored by mom and pop.

MCH/MR/Pistoleer. I chose it as my combat profession for several reasons. One is dodge for when one does get close. At dodge 3 i have pretty good odds of getting out of the way of the attack. As a CH i want to be up close to heal my pets if needed. And rifle doesnt fit that kind of way of doing things.

ummm...our camps provide no "comfort". They disband once you enter combat (3 or more attack rounds is the standard I believe). This is one of our large community issues that we hope to get addressed. We are limited to whatever combat prof we've chosen. Some take Rifleman, some Pistoleer, some go for the melee profs. But no matter what, camps are useless for hunting since they're just gonna poof when you attack (or get attacked).

Personally, for hunting, I'd say go with Rifleman for the wonderful attacks, or a melee prof. TKA/Ranger works well, though not sure how it would tie into your Creature Handling. Best way to do this is test it for yourself. What kind of attacks do you like? KD's, AoE, difficult to block, etc...whatever feels right is the right prof, since Rangers get no excelllent bonuses in any prof. The only thing we get is a plus to-hit mod...but we're not sure if it's Ranged only or included melee. Just go with how you want to play. If you play smart, a pistoleer can out-kill a rifleman (well, a dumb one, anyway). It's all up to you. But Ranger won't help make your life any more comfortable.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

As no surprise to anyone who frequents this forum - I am a Master Pistoleer.

Here is how to quit being stomped.

1. Maskscent.

2. Get a target that is 50-63 m away.

3. Fire no more than three shots - make sure one is a bleed. Iuse two bleeds - Healthshot 1 and 2, and stopping shot.

4. /peace - move to 70m or so.

5. The creature you shot will aggro once the bleed starts. Usually - key word - alone. At 69m shoot, then throw a Pdart. The shot will hit as the creature is moving towards you, and the delay on the Pdart will cause it to hit at 35-40m.

6. Assuming the dart worked - release your pets, and continue to fire. If you have to, pdart again when you see the "snared" sign over the creatures head. Not normally needed tho.

7. Critter is dead, you are untouched. If he does come in close, use MeleeDefense1 - aka pistol whip, and beat feet while firing.

If the animal brings company, and this does happen - sic the pets on the unwounded one. Pdart the wounded one and take it on solo, move move move. Not too hard.

Been doing this tactic since it was shown to me, then I refined parts of it. Practice makes perfect.

And pistols may do less damage, but shoot faster. so it evens out.

I have played as MRanger/MPistoleer and JB has done a great write up of the proper tactics to employ. I will just add a few variations:

On point 3:
I did a macro with "/aim; /Healthshot2; /Healthshot1; /Healthshot2; ..."
I put as much healthshots2 at the end as I could squeeze in before having to run to >64m.
Even though the bleeds don't stack, the initial damage is still quite a bit. The initial /aim is just a freebie, so there is no reason for not using it. Actually, later I learned that up to 3 aims can be stacked to get even better accuracy.

An alternative or addition to using pets/droids as tanks is using nearby (very) aggresive mobs as tanks. Just at point 4 run to the aggressive mobs "territory" and hide behind them. The aggressive mobs will attack your primary target when it get nearby. This works especially well in more difficult planets as such mobs are plentiful. It saves wear and tear on the pet/droid and if you are careful, you can harvest the other mob as well by finishing it off or putting a bleed on it while they are duking it out.

The reason I dropped Pistoleer was the many non functional specials (e.g. MeleeDefense2), and the slowness of the whole process. The parts that do work, work great.

I was going to suggest waiting for the Combat Balance then remembered it isn't coming soon...

JB's tactics are sound. I used similar ones when I was only a novice pistoleer and could take down most creatures or NPCs without any problem.

I really appreciate the posts to my question. I wasn't at all trying to create an uber character that is able to deal out a lot of damage, and the replies have given me the tactics I can apply toward not having to go toe to toe with my targets. I guess I wasn't considering my traps to be an effective part of my arsenal, just because they didn't do damage. So far I having been leveling up the aiming skills for pistoleer and I will probably diversify my skills in the professions even though I will have to sacrifice an aiming level or two in the long run.

Thanksfor everyones help,

Agias

ps I know riflemen can't shoot from camp, I just have headshot envy.

Ever since a certain FPS came out and first used the phrase "headshot" in a really bad-arse voice....everyone has headshot envy. I was just making sure you knew Rangers couldn't be sitting in camp, having a cup of tea, shooting whatever creatures happened to stroll by.

Rifleman/Rangers can also get stomped on. I know there have been several times where I didn't switch to my closer range/faster rifles and gotten a decent womping handed to me. I mean, camo breaks, cover doesn't always work, and many things get cheesed off if you bleed 'em. I try to avoid all this by using camo, cover, and my creatures as tanks. I get run over less and I can basically walk into the middle of thousands of hostile creatures and tame their children. But keep in mind that your pistol can fire from almost the same range as a rifle with comparable accuracy so don't stand underneath the rancor and shoot.

Rotflol,... Oh my that isvery funny, Actually, Galaxies is the first game where I don't mind dying, within reason. If my character diedwhile I was playing anyother non-mmog in the past it would be load game, last save, enter. But I have accepted that being gored to death from time to time, is cool. There would be no fun if there wasn't some risk involved in whatever I was hunting. And there is nothing more fun to me than cloning, getting the buffs I should have got the first time around, andreturning to the waypoint of my demisebringing blazing vengence on whatever beastie is was that did me in, especially if there was no deathblow and they just incappacitated me too many times too close together.

Hi, I am a MCH and MRanger and I used to be a MAster Pistoleer and then eventually went to 0011 in Pistoleer when I mastered Ch and Ranger.

I have just recently given up pistoleer altogether and started Swordsman.

It is actually more fun for me cause I go into combat with my Gurrecks or Rancors now and have fun. Only been a swordsman for 2 days, but anything to give spark to combat is a good choice.

I would switch to something and just try it, worse case you drop it and go back to pistoleer.

But yes, in my opinion Pistoleer is hurting VERY badly, BUT its one saving grace for a CH is that it does health damage exclusively, which works great with your pets.

I personally just needed a new outlook on combat and said wtheck .

Good Luck and good luck on finding those rares, they are buggers.
