Thread: Template advice ... is Master necessary to track and harvest?

I'm putting together a ranger to help jedi friends find quest items and generally hunt and harvest creatures. This toon will not do any pvp. So do I need to master ranger or will field bioscience be enough?

Please let me know your thoughts.

I don't believe Master gets any extra tracking bonuses above the 4th tier in that tree, but it does get a useful harvesting bonus.

If you don't want to master Ranger and don't care about camping or trapping, then 4-0-4-0 is pretty good.

Really you dont need to do any Ranger past tracking IV. All of us who go master, like myself, are mostly masacists who have a self professed love for the profession. But to get the most out of the profession, unless a rifleman, just do 0/0/4/0

If all you are going to do is track things for your friends, go 0040 ranger. Master Ranger only offers another +10 to creature harvesting which brings your total up to +100, I believe. I'd have to check.

Is that extra +10 worth it? Not really. Why? Because I'm working for Master Ranger because I want the title and the Dathomir camo-kits. I had a harvesting droid that was +93 to harvesting. One of my guid mates bought 2 thinking they'd help him with other resources other than hides, bones, and meats. He is a scout, but he's giving me the other one. The harvesting bonus on the droid? +103. Granted, it was an expensive droid, but you can make that up in avian meat for doctors and Endor Wooly Hide for armorsmiths.

Now, if you want the ability to /conceal on all the planets except Dathomir, go 4040 ranger. Here's one thing though. Jedi are gonna be on Dathomir a lot: those Dathomir camo-kits you get as a Master Ranger might save their behinds on occasion. Plus, I'm sure non-friend Jedi (and other players) would be willing to pay for a /conceal for Dathomir.

hehe ...

Well I'm thinking about a template that involves master carbine and ranger and looks something like this:

Master Carbineer

Artisan 0004 (survey)

Ranger 4044

Its an alt toon and really just want it for the ability to go harvest and survey (My regular toon is very competent for PVP and high end PVE) ... and I like the idea of roleplaying a ranger ... maybe even hiring myself out like kit carson.

Any thoughts on species I should make him?

Advice is appreciated.

Hmm... Well, carbines are all about states, and that pretty much makes the Ranger traps (AoE stun/blind/dizzy) pretty redudant... Unless you want to be able to use the trap mods to land scout traps more effectively -- and I could think of a few that would really help a carbineer. (Stink Bombs lower state defense, Phen darts snare, Glow-Juice take down ranged defense, etc.)

I played as a Carbineer on TC back when the character builders were up, and it was a lot of fun -- very unconventional though, but they're not nearly as bad as most people will tell you (for PvE anyway; don't even attempt PvP unless you have BH carbs and a little pistoleer, lol). What's fun about them is you have to use all your specials to cripple with states, plus your KDs and posture-downs to kite the creatures. Get them every state on them, KD, and then cripple shot, and you can do some big damage. Hmm, I never even thought about trying Ranger with Carbineer -- that might be kind of fun. Has anyone tried it?

Anyway, withmy very limited experience with carbineer, I think it could work. I'm not really sure you'd need wayfaring unless you were a rifleman or want to go unbuffed a lot. And the *scout* traps could be really useful, but carbineers can blind/stun pretty effectively on their own already, making the tworanger traps a little less useful-- however, I do believe the extra skill mods would make those scout traps land more on the targets.

As for species? Any. You said you like to roleplay, so whichever one you'd have the most fun roleplaying with.

First of all I want to thank everyone for the advice ... why is it all the rangers I've met have been cool, laid back, friendly types.

I changed the template a bit ... I was thinking carbineer because I had another toon that was carbineer and am SET for weapons. Decided to switch it carbineer to TKM instead though ... I really like the ability to field heal without medic ... especially those nasty diseases/poisons I'll be picking up in my hunting.

So now its:

Ranger 4042

TKM

Artisan 0034 - survey and sales of all the hide I'll be collecting.

I see him as a hunter and miner who can also help jedi/hero questers

100% pve

Actually you can /conceal at Wayfaring I on all planets, you just can't make the kits yourself. And you'll have better luck with /maskscent since your Camo mod will be crap, but you can still use it. It is nice to be able to assemble your own camo kits though, then you can engage in the new past time of /concealing AFK NPC Killers, special thanks to JBMat for that wonderful idea. But as has been said above if you're just out for trackin' and guttin' all you need is 0040. Those of us that go for master are usually the type you see posting about WALKING to the edge of the maps, staying out there for days, not seeing another person, and having a blast.

Because we are just like that. Prolly because Ranger doesn't attract too many powergamers as we aren't a great PvP profession. You'll find similar attitudes out of Creature Handlers and other non-PvP professions.

Also, because we are rare. So, the few of us there are tend to form a band of brotherhood type relationship. We might bicker and argue amoung ourselves, but once you're in the lifestyle we won't let others put you down.

And because we are just plain cool.

Sword is better than tkm for killing critters because you can focus on the mind pool and have blast as well as kinteic damamge.

Amida, if you eat veghash, your harvesting capapcity gets a boost and the droid uses that boosted harvesting capacity as the baseline for applying its bonus. Provided you keep yourself up in veghash, the droid harvests that much better plus the little extra from its multiplier.

I can target and of the HAM bars as TKM. But you are correct with the damage type. Kinetic only gets old fast...
