Thread: Visitors to the Ranger Forum

Yep I know what you mean. There's a certain 'vibe' around the ranger boards lately, and I'm not sure if it's reflection or defeatism.
It used to be really exciting to read this forum - there was a dedicated group of players who really enjoyed the profession and it showed. Ever since launch, this profession has been beset by a long list of negative mythologies (ranger not worth the skillpoints, traps useless, camps useless, harvesting broken, trapping borken, everything broken, devs hate us, mods out to get us, ad nauseam, ad infinitum....), but whereas before the old-timers would go out of their way to debunk these myths (or, at the least, point out that things were not as bad as the myths supposed), now we are beset with posters for whom these myths have taken on the aspect of religious truth. Generally, they fall into two groups:
- martyrs to the profession of ranger, enduring misery after misery after misery in the name of ranger (and reminding us of this in post after post) in the hope of some dev-bestowed reward with which the have already decided will not be 1% of what they had hoped it would be. You can recognize these by the "I'll never give up ranger mantra."
- exiles from the promised land of ranger, forever yearning to cross the same tired mythical divide that they themselves keep widening in post after post. You can recognize these by the "I'm just stopping back in to confirm that things are still exactly like I expect them to be" posts.
And there's really no countering this soft of miserable fervor because both of these factions have such a fanatical stake in ranger always being broken that they will never admit that things are not as bad as they would make them out to be. I mean, you don't make much of a martyr to a torture that you enjoy every now and again (that's called S&M) and an exile that you can come back from on the weekends just doesn't seem as compelling (that's called a job).
So for me, its much more worthwhile just to log my ranger in, take her out into the wild, and enjoy the things that drew me to this profession in the first place then to come in here and try to carry on a more or less coherent conversation about the benefits of our profession with the martyrs and the exiles. Of course, I do stop in every now and again to torment the martyrs (isn't it funny how they can be so persecuted by the forum mods but at the same time so quick to run to them for help in extricating themselves from whatever corner they've managed to argue themselves into) and generally up my post count by recylcing the same tired old master baiter pun....

So Iseult, *stifles giggles*, was that last part for my benefit because I reported you for trolling one time, or do you get reported a lot by other people too?
As for the dichotomy of rangers you painted a picture of, I'm not sure who you're putting on each side of it, since even our hard-working correspondent speaks of the problems with our profession, in a hope that the devs will one day address them.
1) old-time venerables
2) martyrs
3) exiles
4) post-count uppers and general passive agressive-exploiters of the same tired old puns
Owen has definitely earned a place in #1. As for you, well #1 is definitely out of the question (lack of reading comprehension skills sorry), and you need to make a lot more "poop" comments to join me in #4....

"poop" comments are good, but I'm enjoying taking the high road in fanning the flames on the "bugs v leexards" front as well... heheh
Man, burstrun is nice, tho those darn leexards LOVE their dang knockdowns, don't they...
I'm afraid what you see as a lack of reading comprehension is actually a simple lack of interest
Don't take it seriously, it's just funny watching you trying to wind me up.
Anyone else notice how Iseult side-stepped the trolling question?
*snigger*
Don't mind me, I'm just in a slightly hysterical mood today.

There's no denying that the mood in this forum took a nosedive just before the CU hit, and has yet to recover. The fact that the old guard doesn't put in as many appearances hurts this place even more, but you can't blame them for backing off a bit. Meanwhile, those of us that specialize in light, breezy posts have little to work with-- it's too easy to spiral into cynicism when there's never a bit of good news coming our way.
Then again, maybe it's this growing sexual tension between dave and iseult that's throwing everything off. What's up with that? Anyway, like my dear old grandma used to say, "Nerf the non-jedi!"
I'm very tired.

In all seriousness, I suspect that Owen et al, who have been doing a lot of work behind the scenes are taking a well needed rest from "save the ranger" campaigns. I think that the combat revamp (still can't use the 'U' word there) has been demoralising not least because of the really poor communication from SOE.
JB has been working his buttocks off IRL (ghastly how life requires you to do that once in a while) with odd days off.
And he is also tired of people whining about trapping xp. They should pull their collective heads outta their 4th points of contact and use traps while hunting starting day one. Hence he will not post in those threads.
Oh yeah, he has been playing more and posting less, he likes Kashyyk.
Now if he would only quit with the annoying third person stuff....

On the one hand, I'm sick of people complaining about all the broken stuff in Ranger. And I'm VERY sick and tired of the 7 page, 2000 words per post threads dreadging up the same stuff over and over in the hopes that a dev wants to curl up by the fire with the ranger forum for the rest of the winter and wade through it all (I can get bored at work, but not THAT bored). I'm also really sick of people playing the part of Ranger Martyr across every other profession forum. And finally, I'm sick of posts like the one I'm making right now. Posts where people complain about the Ranger forum - as you can see, this makes me a big fat hypocrite.
On the other hand, ranger (although not quite as hard-done-by as some would like to belive) is in bad shape and does need attention.
I wanna be in-game more than on the forums, but hey, gotta make a buck. I've been having TONS of fun in-game lately and arguably the most fun I've had in the game EVER. So while the forums may be dismal at best, I'm having an absolute ball in-game.
See you in the woods!

lammergeier has also been seen posting in the third person.
he blames the 'rush of power' that he feels whenever he sees his blue name, and the 'lammergeier tracker' in his sig.
also, there are reports from unreliable sources that accuse him of heavy drinking. he insists that his work schedule, and his new allergy medication, are the culprits for any errant behavior of late.

You may enjoy fanning the flames of me versus the Leezards, but just remember that no matter how you slice them, Bothans will always be lower on the totem pole than rodians, and no matter how you skin em, the Leezards will be below rodians too.

Weel, for ME it's I have a 5 month old daughterism and I just moved into a new houseism. Beware, I will be back in full force, soon!
