Thread: New combat idea: hybrid power-ups

I posted this on the rifleman forum, but I want to put it here for melee fighters:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is probably a crazy idea with the combat revamp on the horizon.

However I was thinknig a while about some people on here talking about melee attacks for riflemen (with rifle-butts etc). Then I also got to thinking about the "force lance" that is used in the Andromeda TV series.

Which then lead me to this idea: Instead of putting a stat boosting onto a rifle, how about adding a melee attachment (that would wear out like a power up does).

A fine example would be a bayonet.

For those PvE'ers among us, just imagine, sniping a mountain squill (with auto fire), then, when it finally works out where you are, it charges for you and when it's in melee range you finish it off with a lunge for your bayonet equipped rifle.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Conversely, could you put a blaster attachment onto the end of a vibroaxe?

Alternatively, you could do it so you'd need the weapons skills for both. So you use the existing moves/shots with these attachments. Say for the quoted example, you have rifle skills aswell as sword/fencer skill.

What would be even better is if they had never even put powerups in the game. They make no real sense, If teh weapon was actually capable of that kind of damage the the manufactures would just make them that way... I think they just added tyhem so that people would wear out their guns and need new ones faster.

I disagree because there are such things in real life. Laser sights, telescopic sights, all increase accuracy which increases 'average damage'.

Right, so after that digression, back to the original post please

It isn't a precise cross post, this one has more details than the other post.

Personaly I'm finding the off topic replies even more rude

I think this is a really cool idea - especially for those people who DO have skills in two differenct professions but feel like they can only use one at a time. I do think you should need the skills in both melee and ranged. Giving one profession the stats of another profession just makes everything more generic.

One of the most underultilized thing about weapons is the ability to customize them. Everyone seems to do factory runs and everyone gets the same looking, same acting gun. I'd love to strap a knife to my rifle for looks alone lol. I've already had my guild smith make me some really cool looking ones with components I've picked up along the way. Some I use, some are just for the wall.

I like the idea.

Hey Dave - So if I was Pistoleer / Fencer.... oh wait, would only work on rifles? That's not fair.

See the problems you just caused?

Just bringing up a point you may have missed. And FYI, Pistoleers do have a melee move, and our traps do increase it sticking.

Not at all. It's a vague idea so there's no reason why it couldn't be generalised to melee vs firearms. So as long a you have some melee and some firearm skills there could be some hybrid power up available (admittedly I have trouble imagining such a power up to put on vibroknucklers, but that is answered with either being more imaginative than i am, or leaving them out on the ground that TKA's have perks the rest of us don't anyway).

Isn't this just giving more power to pure combat templates? Isn't that a bad thing?

Possibly yes, but I'd certainly consider dropping some of my current skills if I could sticka bayonet onto my rifle

Arg. I am having flashbacks to another post. Was this idea actually already suggested? I remember talking about a small crossbow to strap to my wrist being an extension of a vibroknukler... but I forget when I said it and if I was joking or not!
