This is to provide a counter point to Calc's post about combat specials while mounted on a creature. Rather than doing that, I think a more basic and less controversial move would be to allow us to throw traps while mounted.
So feel free to give arguments for and against, and at what point this skill comes in (novice scout, master scout, novice ranger, master ranger?).

Well adhesive mesh is kind of sticky when your boucing around on a Cu'Pa it would need a 1 in 100 critical fail affects your mount thing

I figger if a cowboy can throw a rope with great accuracy from the back of a galloping horse, space cowboys like us should be able to lob some random gizmo with fair accuracy from the back of a stampeding bantha. You can even write a macro that ends with /spit to simulate real-life tobacco action!
And yeah, I have actually worked cattle before.

Was that a serious answer?

Well I 'sposeif we can shoot from mounts, we should also be able to lob a trap easy enough, though it should probably have an even smaller chance to affect the target if we are still in motion.

Was that a serious answer Dave?! Coming for me you would ask that? Its a game why would a trap incased in metal and plastic (polymer) be sticky? I was kidding jeesh

I'll throw in my support (not that THAT in itself means it's worth anything, I'm not even at master yet
). I think Dave's idea is actually quite good, doesn't really unbalance anything as we can't use traps against PCs or NPCs anyways, so it's still just keeping us Ranger vs Critter.

Why should we?
Before mounts we were - and are - the masters of terrain negotiation. After mounts, we still are the masters of fast running and speed crawling. Doesn't affect (or is it effect) our mount's speed or hill climbing ability. Nor should it. It's like saying the Lance Armstrongs cycle ability will translate inherently into his motorcycling ability... both are two wheeled vehicles.
Ever tried shooting from a moving vehicle ?(and before you ask, yes I have - was a silly school Uncle sent me too once upon a time) Unless you are using full auto (rock and roll, spray and pray) you ain't hitting squat. Newton's Laws of Physics and all that stuff.
Being Rangers gives us no special abilities using mounts/vehicles. I have yet to see a cogent argument why we should.
This from a guy who takes his swoop to get from his house to the shuttleport, but who tends to run on missions... go figure.

Personally, I'd rather see traps work against Players. But only at the Ranger level, not as Scouts.

Because it's a natural progression, as will be alaborated on below.

The subject line says "Why should Rangers be able to throw traps while mounted on a creature?". It is not about X34's or Swoops. Anybody can currently fire a weapon while on a creature mount.

If you are talking about the game, yes I have and have made many kills doing so. If you are talking about real life, well then yes it is certainly harder, but it is not impossible. Since you want to bring physics into this, I've got a first class Masters Degree in physics, so if you want I can do the maths for you to prove it's possible. However, we're not talking about real life we're talking about a game in which shooting from a moving creature-mount is already possible.

Here's the simple case. So far, everyone can fire weapons whether they're on a creature or on their feet. While on our feet we rangers (and scouts) can throw traps as well as use weapons, that's our ability (well to be exact, it's our chance of success which is our skill). So I'm saying let that translate through to when we're on a creature too. If you really think about it, it doesn't make sense that we can't.

I agree, I don't think it makes sense that can only use them on wild animals. I think we should be able to use our traps against everything, just with varying degrees of sucess. However, this is a seperate issue to what I asked about, and it's probably more cotroversial too.
