Thread: Poll: The Ranger Profession
greattings all, i'm doing a little research and i was hoping i could get some feed back from the Ranger comunity. i myself really cant say much about the profession because i only have frountering 1 and im going to have to dropthe hole thingsoon.
Are Rangers happy with the current state of your profession?
- are you content with what you have but still want to see more added inteh future?
- are you disapointed and feel you waisted your time training this profession?
- do you feel you are an importaint element to the SW Galaxy or do you feel usless?
please feel free to submit any comments you have, i just want a general idea of how you think your profession has turned out
are you content with what you have but still want to see more added inteh future?
I'm reasonably content. I'm content because Rangers have more than they used to, and I see it as a good start. I would, however, still like to see more things added in two ways: 1. More things to make Rangers unique and useful as a class, and 2. More things related to content, but I'd like this to happen for every profession at somepoint ![]()
are you disapointed and feel you waisted your time training this profession?
Not in the slightest. I personally am a large-investment-dabbler; meaning I like to pick a profession and master it, then after being a master for a while find something new to go after. I'm very glad I chose to try out (and master) this profession. After I try out and master many others this one is definitely on my list of ones to come back to!
do you feel you are an importaint element to the SW Galaxy or do you feel usless?
Currently I'm still living off the money I made as a Smuggler, so I don't feel the need to sell Hides/Bones/Meat to make money. If I did sell my harvest then I would probably feel useful in that area. I'm not sure what else to say about this. I don't feel useless, but it's possible I would if I didn't have my Pistoleer skills.
Yes I am somewhat content.
Are you disapointed and feel you waisted your time training this profession?
Oh h3ll No!!!
Do you feel you are an importaint element to the SW Galaxy or do you feel usless?
I feel that I'm an Important Element to the sw galaxy. With Harvests I can keep many of the crafting professions happy.
Tracking Is a Service, both for Baby creatures and Tracking down players/npcs. (Its not perfect, but better than nothing)
Fronitering Line, while offering not much more than eye candy over scout camps does offer a quicker auto heal rate. Well worth the resources In My eyes.
Trapping I won't go there.

You get some people that piss and moan about how ranger sucks. Others are just tickled pink with the profession. For what its worth, just Enjoy.
If you enjoy it thats all that really matters.

In short, yes. My functional skills are great, and I look forward to seeing Tracking & Camping modified, updated, etc.

Disappointed? Nope. When I started down the ranger line, it was very empty. The improvements to-date have enriched the profession into two or three times what it was... and more is coming. Its been a slow process, but I'm the patient type.

Important? I'm certainly a part of the economy with my harvesting and selling of hides. As for group encounters, its all about perspective there... some people appreciate the things I bring to a PvE group (tracking, camo, creature info), but others could care less. Beyond tracking, any PvP group will find my ranger skills pretty useless.

It isn't enough "bang for the buck." It is a 140 skill point allotment, so I feel some people get a bit dismayed when they see the actual skills in action. There have been a lot of improvements promised for the future, and those look very nice.
One of the biggest "issues" I see is the definition of ranger to begin with. Are we PvE only? Are we PvP? The ranger community is divided on this issue, and our class skills don't provide a definitive answer either. You'll see this debate pop up a lot here (I believe N'Raas is actually polling the community even).
I see us as a mix of both... strategists, guerilla fighters, who are best in "wild" settings. One thing most Rangers do agree on.. we aren't designed for the city. As a class that supports and enriches other professions, I believe we should have functionality on both fronts.
I could say more... like most rangers, I like debating and discussing the class... but I'll spare you!

No I'm not content, and yes I'd like to see a LOT more added to this profession in the future: mainly the things brought up in the forums already, such as camps work as their description implies (e.g. repel aggro), more/different traps that really trap, conceal that really conceals, etc.
- are you disapointed and feel you waisted your time training this profession?
No, I don't feel I wasted my time on this profession. If I did I would've dropped it by now. Having said that I do wish to see some improvements/fixes/additions made within the next month or two. At least one of the "top 5" issues needs to be dealt with in that time frame.
- do you feel you are an importaint element to the SW Galaxy or do you feel usless?
Thats an iffy subject. The one really unique ability Rangers have, namely /areatrack, makes us useful in some situations (looking for babies, krayts, etc.). Other than that, people don't go looking for Rangers to group up with. The primaryreason is a preponderance of Scouts running around. So many people have skills in the Scout profession (all BE, CH, BH, & SL require it and many others take some in it anyway) and Scouts can do many of the things Rangers do. In my case, I'm probably most useful as a dedicated supplier of creature resources to Bio-Engineers, Doctors, Combat Medics, and sometimes Armorsmiths. That's most often what I get queried about. I'd like to see more unique Ranger abilities that help both solo Rangers and Rangers who like to join big hunting groups.

I'd like to see us truly live up to our description: "The Master Ranger is unequaled in outdoors skills. They have traveled to many places and encountered many strange beasts along the way. They are an unrivaled explorer and trap maker."
I'd like to see Rangers become as sought after as Medics are on big hunts. I'd love to see people asking Rangers to group up because of our traps, our concealment abilities, our tracking, and hunting prowess. Master Ranger: Never leave home without one.
I am sort of happy with the profession.
I like the profession a lot. But since it is a support position and I solo alot I need to make a choice: either start hunting in groups where I would be more useful, or try a different profession.
I'm sure others are happy with ranger, but I quit 2 weeks after achieving Master -- and oddly enough, nothing about my gameplay changed. Okay, so my camps have less eye candy but that's pretty much it.
I kept the tracking line since that's usefull from time to time, but other than that, everything else about the profession was disposable and never missed. Theabilities I picked up by applying those skill points toward pistols and heavy swordsman, however, are quite valuable.
I'll probably come back to ranger when they make it worthwhile, but that's probably many, many months away.
I'll play along:
1. Are you content with what you have but still want to see more added in the future?
I am somewhat content. It depends on how you define a Ranger's role in this game. As a Master Ranger, none are better than us at killing and skinning beasts, but to me that's a chore, not a fun element to being a Ranger. Much more needs to be added, especially how faction Rangers need special treatment, so we can actually benefit the GCW.
2. Are you dissapointed and feel you wasted your time training this profession?
I am dissapointed. I do not feel it was a waste of time though. It is a fun climb, and I enjoyed it immensely, and continue to very much enjoy being a Ranger. It seems to me it would have been better if I had not taken part in the GCW though, as it makes no sense right now to be a Ranger in the middle of the war.
3. Do you feel you are an important element to the SW Galaxy or do you feel usless?
Important element? No. We get slightly more than the average scout on harvests, but still nothing much seperates us from Scouts. Camo kits work great, but not like I thought.
I do feel useless for what I really wanted to use my Ranger skills for, and thatis to add benefit to the Galactic Civil War as a Ranger. I want to be able to camoflauge myself, and become invisible to Overt Imps. I want to have something that makes us feel we can add value to the chosen faction. Right now, for me to participate in raids and PvP and PvE battles, I feel Ranger was a waste of a lot of skill points.
Thanks to the Rangers of Bria for adding much value to this profession as it stands, but I must be honest and say my days asa Master Ranger are numbered.I am not much for dabbling, but I got used to getting from point a to point b faster than most people. I say most, because human Bounty Hunters and Trandos and Bothans outrun me as Scouts.
So, maybe it was my fault for choosing to beZabrak Ranger. Who knows.
I don't feel like going in detial, but one of the main things I've seen is people stating that they are not happy with the way Rangers fit into the GCW. I have seen the oppisite with my Ranger. When we have word on a raid coming to our city Haven a Ranger is the first to get called, well one with tracking IV atleast. We are the first line of information. We can get numbers and distance of the coming raid and plan accordingly.
Rangers arn't meant to be the 'go kill them' type but the type that is able to get information fast from this line, and get it out fast enough to allow a defense to form for the size coming. The camo kits have worked wonderfully for me, except on Lok. I am able to take a party to any planet and get us to what we want to hunt quickly with minimal aggro.
The camps work great as well. I can get them up and get everyone healed faster with a Ranger camp then say a scout camp or no camp at all. The only downfall of this is the GCW. If we hit someone and have to set up a ranger camp they are easily spotted, which ins't that bad becuase most are healed by the time they hit. Also the crafting stations in the camps are great for when your healer, or combat medic, start whining about running out of stims and such.
Traps.....I hate this line. Traps rarely work on high level mobs. This line needs some working on.....able to use on PC's would be great.
That's all. ![]()
Most definatley. Though we have come a long way in the class, we still need, and ill push the old debate again...HTFB needs a cloning center, we need to go into the tents...the Traps should work on ch animals, we need a /track command, not just /areatrack, we need to get some clothing change for the camo kits, we need some ranger specific weapons, we need specialized PvP traps...
are you disapointed and feel you waisted your time training this profession?
Well, to be honset, not really yet. But if we dont get the changes most of us want, yes, I believe that many rangers will drop this profession if we dont get the changes we want.
do you feel you are an importaint element to the SW Galaxy or do you feel usless?
Personally, I do /areatrack hunts. The camps dont protect you from wild animals, the traps are worth less on CH animals, I stink at PvP(only at block 2 of 2 handed) so i cant do much there(not like Ranger gives me much to do in PvP), Camo kits take tons of resources and for what? A little protection that breaks every 4 mins? Come On! So, to sum it up, I have a job, a small job, I want a bigger job...I WANT A RANGER PROFESSION THAT WORKS!!!
