Thread: Would you still be a Ranger if...
...vehicles and mounts had been included at launch?
What reason is there for us here?
Is the abilities granted at Ranger worth the skill points?
Did you only move onto Ranger after Scout because you could?
Why are you still a Ranger?
Just a few simple questions. I think the primary one is what we should dwell on more.
I got ranger because I thought of doing it since they announced the profession during beta. Same with scout. I like the idea of it, although I was thinking it would be more of a military type ranger, but I liked it as it was anyway. I have had lots of fun with it, but I have to admit, a lot of the changes going on, both in the game in general and in different professions, are truely making me rethink it.
I have a truely sad feeling that if they don't start making some "smart" changes in ranger in the next few months, I will start dropping it. I have lots of other professions and combos I want to try, and I have wanted to keep master ranger. We shall see.
My answers and I am taking time to think about them:
Probably not, as I didn't even look into Ranger until I got midway through Scout.
We should be the safe haven away from civilization for hunters and combat troops. We still have some of that ability, we just need it buffed up a bit.We should be what all Armorsmiths and Tailors and Chefs are looking for when it comes to their creature materials. We are a supplier of materials for other professions.
Yes.
No, I moved on as I enjoyed what Scout brought to me, and I liked the idea that I could progress farther and deeper into this mold. I didn't have to become a Ranger, but I did and I am enjoying my time with it.
Because it makes me feel important. It allows for me to self sufficient if I need it, while also allowing me to be an asset to my friend who just dropped all his scout skills to become a doc. He is more a PvP player and I am more a PvE player, yet we do nicely when combating either. I do think I am in the rank of Master Creature Hunter, but I think I am much more than that. Also, I feel more respected by other players when they see me as I am a Master Ranger. (besides who doesn't respect someone who spent all that time camping, ![]()
Even after I master scout i didnt notice that there was a Ranger profession, like most people when I first started playing, i wanted to be a Bounty Hunter. But I had a friend who starteda month before me, and just got Novice BH... he told me how hard and kinda awful the grind was. Then a friend of mine was telling me about this tracking skill he saw in Ranger, we tried it out, and I fell in love with the profession. I didnt master it till just after vehicles came out.
I like the ideas and rp'ing more than being uber so Ranger hasnt let me down yet.
Hologrinding it.
Will make my pass through as fast as possible.
Then on to other things. Thanks SOE for making me drop all the professions I really like.
I planned my template out before the game was even released. I was really looking forward to making master ranger. I would have wanted to be master ranger even if vehicles etc. were in game at launch.
Sure I have been bummed about some of our less than useful skills. But I still do enjoy the profession. I am looking forward to upcoming changes.
I really enjoy having Master Ranger as my characters title profession. I love making camps, and can't wait until they will be made more valuable and are wanted more in groups. I love using traps and would be thrilled if there were improvements there too.

Follow your heart.
Ranger Traps suck.. but the +trapping you get as you go up the Ranger tree makes your scout traps stick better.
Ranger Camps are impressive.. but not particularly useful unless you are on a big hunt and nobody on that hunt wants the camping XP.
Tracking can be a very useful skill, if you understand its limitations.
Camo does work now on many NPC's, even though its not supposed to, and I camo my BE buddy all the time while he samples DNA.
Rescue can be a useful skill, if you understand its limiations.
Master Rangers DO harvest a LOT more than Scouts.
Most of us agree that the points spent on Ranger are a lot for what you get.. but we stick with it for various reasons. For my own part, I really can't think of anything better to spend the points on. I am a Master Rifleman so any other weapons skills are pretty much useless to me.
Sure I could get some hand to hand combat skills like TKA or something, but quite frankly I don't need them. Using my head as a Master Rifleman lets me kill anything I want on most planets.
CH pretty much blows unless you get Master, and I really prefer not having to bother with a pet while hunting anyway.
Artisan or Entertainer?? I think not. Let me buff my own mind and I might consider it.
I suppose I could up my medic skills.. but what for? In most cases, I can kill the MOB on my hunting partners faster than I could run over there an heal them. I use tactics, skills and traps to keep myself from getting into too much trouble anyway and I find it more exciting hunting when there is some danger involved instead of being "uber" and "untouchable".
We all do it for different reasons, and for me, I use skills that work, I skip the ones that don't, and I can't think of anything I would rather do.

I made it to Master Ranger and enjoyed it very much until the reality of it set in. When I looked and saw that if I kept Master Ranger and mastered a combat line, I would only have 18 skill points left. That's hardly enough to even pick up a novice profession. By getting Master Ranger, I had used up 56% of my skill points. I simply could not see any way that I was getting my money's worth out of my skill points.
One day, I may return to being a Master Ranger. Like the Bounty Hunters and Commandos preach about, skill points spent in a profession should translate to usefulness. It just does not translate in our case.
I'm afraid I'm only a ranger until I master it, like Tenn I'm afraid I'm just hologrinding it, sorry.
Ranger never really appealed to me, like squad leader, it's an awful lot of points to spend on something that really doesn't do all that much, I tend to prefer playing doctor characters, so once I've got this grind out of the way I'll pick my doc back up -doctor/master ranger doesn't leave ANY space for combat skills. I'll be going back to master doctor/master melee next probably, I've done swordsman, which I really liked, but I might do fencer next (unless I get a 'cron in the meantime telling me I should do something else).
Tracking might prove interesting, but to be honest, I'd rather dump all my scout as well and free up a load of points better spent elsewhere.
