Thread: Hmmm... Did I do the right thing?
I recently started a character, planning to be a master Ranger, but after checking out this forum, it seems like ranger skills aren't as useful as they appear.
Does anyone have any advice? Is it not bad? Is it terrible? Is it worth it?
I thought trapping at master Ranger would be really cool. I mean by successfully trapping very high level monsters with awesome traps, but it sounds like that's not the case. Area track sounds bugged and not too useful. And apparently camps aren't as valued as I thought they were.
What should I do?
Well, if you just started a character, just do scout first.. and hopefully by the time you finish that we'll have a better idea as to what will be fixed/improved and by when...
But yes, it is true, at the moment the ranger stuff leaves much to be desired for.. on paper we have some neat things, but they don't really work out quite well. Check out the "Outdoorsman" thread and read the proposal. That document will be sent to the devs... if you like what you read there, then stick around.. if not.. then do something else and check back later
Ranger Traps suck.. but the +trapping you get as you go up the Ranger tree makes your scout traps stick better.
Ranger Camps are impressive.. but not particularly useful unless you are on a big hunt and nobody on that hunt wants the camping XP.
Tracking can be a very useful skill, if you understand its limitations.
Camo does work now on many NPC's, even though its not supposed to, and I camo my BE buddy all the time while he samples DNA.
Rescue can be a useful skill, if you understand its limiations.
Master Rangers DO harvest a LOT more than Scouts.
Most of us agree that the points spent on Ranger are a lot for what you get.. but we stick with it for various reasons. For my own part, I really can't think of anything better to spend the points on. I am a Master Rifleman so any other weapons skills are pretty much useless to me.
Sure I could get some hand to hand combat skills like TKA or something, but quite frankly I don't need them. Using my head as a Master Rifleman lets me kill anything I want on most planets.
CH pretty much blows unless you get Master, and I really prefer not having to bother with a pet while hunting anyway.
Artisan or Entertainer?? I think not. Let me buff my own mind and I might consider it.
I suppose I could up my medic skills.. but what for? In most cases, I can kill the MOB on my hunting partners faster than I could run over there an heal them. I use tactics, skills and traps to keep myself from getting into too much trouble anyway and I find it more exciting hunting when there is some danger involved instead of being "uber" and "untouchable".
We all do it for different reasons, and for me, I use skills that work, I skip the ones that don't, and I can't think of anything I would rather do.
It kind of depends on your play style I think. Ranger is a good supportcharacter for large group outings I think. The ranger tents (3 of them) are cool if you have a large group, and useless if you go solo. The /conceal ability (if it worked well) could potentially be useful in a group outing, but again it's useless if you go solo (since masked scent seems to work better and is easier). The ranger traps (all 2 of them) have some usefulness if you're being attacked by multiple creatures, since it affects an area of them, but the effectiveness of the traps seems very low (I have trapping 4 in the ranger tree). It doesn't seem to have a profound affect on the animals, and often times it has no affect at all (doesn't work). Most of the time I find myself using the scouting traps just as most of the time I use the scouting tents and masked scent.
Area track I like, and is useful. It's nice to be able to go finish a mission and scan the area to see if there's anything else interesting to kill. Also it's useful to find your mates if you get separated during battle, and it's also useful to walk into a town you've never been to, and instantly locate the trainers you want to visit. Area track is useful, but not powerful.
My take is that you'll be a lot better outdoorsman/hunter if you get master scout and some really good combat and medical skills, and if you have leftover dabble into the ranger tracking/hunting line. Since the rest of the ranger line has a neglicable effect on your ability to survive in the wildnerness and hunt, you're better off making yourself better at defending/healing yourself.

I'm getting orders like this but find myself in a catch 22, I have a Doc that wants Herbv meat from Endor, now I have visited twice and twice have been spanked from every which way. I simply lack the combat skills to keep those **edit** Bols from wearing me down to the point that I have nothing left to fight my chosen prey.
So, form a group of fighters to take with me - thats proved to be much harder than I thought, what's in it for them is the question they ask. Gits..!
Even with a group formed, I did manage it eventually, you really do need to take a Doc. Finding a doc on the Farstar server who will do anything other than sit in the med centre healing tumbling players in Coronetaint easy either. The furthest they will fenture is a Snarf hunt South of Coronet.
So (its getting tedious even writing this now, I feel for you reader..!) I tell the Doc that wants the stuff that if she ever expects to see it she will need to come with me and help. Her, and 3 Rangers set off to Endor and we do manage to get what we want. She later tells me that she used more stims keeping us alive on Endor than she can make with the resources we harvested.
Bah....! Catch 22....
I return to hunting Kadus on Naboo, my poor combat skills can just about deal with them....!
When I'm done grinding, I'll be going back to heavy swordsman - 2handareahit3 is superb for dropping loads of mid level mobs, so it's great for getting avian meat on Talus - someone tried to sell me a bunch at 80 cpu, when I can jump a shuttle for a few hundred credits and slaughter them myself, why would I pay that ?

In moving up the ranger skill tree I have read in other posts that it is good to have some medical skills. What medical skills/tree would be best to add?
Hah, youre not kidding matey.
I have Pharma II - for the B stims. Thats about all I have.
Yes, you only need Novice to use stim B's. I have FA1 (gives a little help when using stims and healing wounds) and some stim B's a doc experimented up to 398. I can heal most of my hamin 1 shot.

I play with my ranger tag on. I've gotten a total of 1 tell asking for organics in like 4 months of gameplay. That's not to say I can't sell what I harvest, but people don't exactly beat down your door or seek you out. 99.9% of the tells you get as a ranger are from other rangers asking for free training.
