I think we can all agree that /areatrack is pretty much useless with the addition of all the vehicles into the game. Now after you read this solution I want you to put aside your initial reaction and think about it for a minute. When you think about this you will realize that this doesn't really impact the game as much as it might seem at first.Sowith thatin mind here are three simple rules that willfix this problem.

1. If you are mounted and traveling faster than /burstrun speed then NPC,Creatures and players do not show on radar.

Justification: When traveling at high rates of speed you should not be able to visually identify targets as wellas when travelingslower.

2. If you are mounted and traveling faster than /burstrun speed then your character is ignored by thedynamic spawn system.

Justification:When traveling at high rates of speed you will be seen and heard by creatures long before you see them and they will avoid you. Inaddition this has the added benefit of possibly reducing server load.

3. When you use the /areatrack command and select a target, a waypoint is generated to the target location. This should work just like the /survey skill.

Justification: When combined with rule 1 and 2 this will allow Rangers to use their tracking skill to lead other players to creature herds and lairs.

Calc,

Yes I'm sure your right that my idea would not be well received by the rest of the community, my goal however wasto correct the nerf that occurred to Rangers when they implemented vehicles. I doubt if vehicles were originally designed to be used as a hunting platform and indeed you cant hunt from them. All my idea does is put things back the way they were before vehicles were implemented but at the same time letting us keep the vehicles that we all love.

Cableguy,

Yes I'm familiar with the way JB feels about waypoints and I can see his point as it pertains to the current system. My reference to using waypoints is only if my idea were to be implemented. As its stands right now I don't think we need waypoints.

I see your point.

Basically, while mounted on a creature or a bike, then there are no spawns as you fly by, in so doing, this would fix area track.

here is the first issue i see to this idea.
1) Just the other night, I was hunting Fambaa on Naboo. I had 2 missions and I was in an area rich in random Fambaa spawns. Before I had even got to my missions, I found 3 lairs via /ar and 2 lairs just flying by. I actually enjoy the randomness in the dynamic spawns that sometimes gives me exactly what I am looking for.

2) This, I dont think, addresses the /ar 100 meter blind spot inherent in the game.

3) Nor does it address the ghost issue. How many times have you tracked the elusive peko albatross only to find that its not there and was only there as a ghost.

4) I would see a sortable menu by faction/ creature type/ npc as much more useful than a waypoint. Im naturally against a waypoint...I like the challenge...in RL, I can use a compass and find my way across complex terrain using nothing more than a map, compass, pencil and a sturdy pair of boots.

5) Lastly this doesnt address the bugs of tracking critters in mountainous terrain.

These are the issues that I think would make tracking useful again...although, your points have merit as well. In my opinion, we have different /ar priorities

thanks again BaneShee

A couple of comments:

a) the system already kinda does what you say. Often times if you are moving fast on a swoop you'll miss a lot of things. Heck, sometimes I'll plow right through buildings on a swoop because I'm past them before they are even rendered.

b) If we feel that the only way to make one of our core abilities useful is to nerf everyone that doesn't have it, then we'd be better off just getting rid of that ability and replacing it with something that actually is desirable in and of itself.

c) I agree with JB. No need for a waypoint. Waypoints feel less "rangery" and we all know our N-S-E-W.

My thoughts exactly, I just didn't have the monkeys to say it.

Agon,

Your concern about missing the random spawn is justified but we cant have our cake and eat it too. Actuallyin your example, once you reached your target and slowed down to /burstrun speed then the dynamic spawn system should kick in and start spawning again. In additionif /areatrack were working correctly and as intended then when you use /areatrack it should spawn a heard or lair for you.

Agreed this doesn't fix the bugs in /areatrack thus my topic is a little misleading but it does rectify the nerf to Rangers and as far as I'm concerned one good nerf deserves another.

If you can't read a compass and guesstimate distance, go bea freaking Image Designer.

Tell me the use of a waypoint?

Right, totally useless. Animals move. Minerals don't. Artisans get them because their stuff is invisible. We can see our animals.

How bout we fix areatrack and getit working as advertised instead of trying to bastardize it with waypoints and times spawns do and don't work. /ar is broke, let's get it working before you start screwing with it.

Once more, with feeling - NO FREAKING WAYPOINTS.

Keep in mind that anyone who still wants to hunt can ride a vehicle to a certain location and then run around looking for random content just like they always could, this doesn't change that. All this does is prevent vehicles from nullifying the usefulness of /areatrack. Who knows maybe they can even have a need to set up a camp where they can park a vehicle in safety while they go out looking for game.

JB,

You need to take a figgin chill pill and read the whole thread before you start running off at the mouth ... Once you do that then post.

Your words, as cut and pasted.

Waypoints can be seen by one person, that would be the Ranger. Hmm, animals are visible, as are lairs. Real tough to miss usually, so why the waypoint?

I say again, if you can't read the compass, there are many publications to help you. Or go be an image designer. It's not like we are going 500 klicks, its at best 500 meters, thats less than 20 secs on a swoop. You get lost in 500 m, give it the freak up troop and go be a Dancer.

Now, let's stow the stupid crap and get areatrack fixed before you start borking it up. It plain does not work in most terrain and we need it fixed.

We need waypoints like a fish needs a bike. We do need /ar fixed. Let's get the stuff fixed and working.

JB

btw, I can read a compass, really well

JB, Read the whole threadnot just the first post. You missed my response to cableguy .... You may be able to read a compass but you dont do very well with threads ......

I think the point is this; We don't need waypoints. If your system were implemented, we still wouldn't need waypoints. We will never, ever need waypoints with areatrack.

I'm with JB on this. I'm just as vehement, only less rude in my communication. But then, if you've been shooting the idea down as long as JB has, perhaps there's reason...

I'm also strongly against the waypointing for /areatrack, even if they increase the range. It just wouldn't be nearly as much fun. I like having a skill that makes me think. It even helps me realize when I've been playing too long (how many ofyou have ever gone NE instead of NW or something similar by accident? And then wondered why your target kept getting farther away?). Waypoints might be needed for /track as the only other way to implement it would be a dynamically updated system message telling you where to go and that would probably be much harder to code in. Even so, I'd much rather have a more organic system (you sense your target towards the west...you sense your target to the north... ...). BHs get waypoints. I want something that lets me think a bit.
