Thread: Master Ranger vs. Novice Scout Harvesting (with more concrete info)

Well, I got quite a shock earlier today. I was out hunting on Corellia with a guild mate. They had picked up novice scout recently to test what sort of resources were around. I had nothing better to do so I came along. Luckily the Devs added group harvesting notification or I never would have noticed this. A Novice Scout was pulling AT LEAST HALF of what I was getting as a Master Ranger. This was off the same exact kill with the same resource pulled on a variety of low level mobs while grouped. I don't know about anyone else but I know that at Master Rifleman I can kill a whole lot more than I can with Novice Marksman. And that is a much lower skill point difference (48 or so...). Heck, I can probably say the same thing about Marksman 4/0/0/0 vs. Novice as well. Now I didn't get to do much testing (this was all on mobs under CL 20, I couldn't find anything like a sharnaff at the time) but it is definately worth looking into. I'm guessing the difference will become bigger on larger mobs but only doubling my harvest rate on anything after 125 skill points seems a bit low. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? And please try and do some testing on bigger stuff and possibly ungrouped as well. I just thought I'd mention it as soon as I noticed it.

Were you two grouped? Rember that there is a grouping "penalty". Basically, I have tested out that if I killed some critter solo, I would get x amount of meat. If I killed same critter while in a group, I would end up getting less.

Although, I haven't hunted with a nov in a long time, so I have no info on your origional question.

In a group there is a 40% drop in harvesting rate... If I remember correctly, but don't quote me on that. This was added as it caused a fair few arguments in groups as to who would get the next harvest.

Also there is a chef food now which increases your harvesting rate, it doesn't make much of a difference for a Master Ranger but a novice scout can get near Master scout harvesting rates.... The fact it doesn't make much of a difference for a Master Ranger suggests there is some kind of cap on the % increase. I only ever got 1 to 5 more units when I was testing it out..

Yes, we were grouped. Grouping causes you to harvest 60% of your normal rate. But that applies to all group members (so the relative amount harvested should stay the same). This is something I noticed because of the new grouping system messages. I just thought I'd bring it up as it seems worse than the minor increase from Ranger 0/0/3/0 to Master.

Yes, there is a chef food that helps harvesting (veghash). It doesn't seem to do all that much for a Master Ranger although it does make a difference and different quality veghash makes a different amount of difference (meaning that it is unlikely to be a hard cap). But it is something that would be worth testing.

What I'm begining to think is that they might have the calculation for harvesting amount mixed up (like they did for BH droid speed). I will hopefully be able to test this a bit more later today. I'm just not aware of anyone comparing Novice Scout to Master Ranger harvesting rates and the difference was a bit shocking.

There was some evidence in another post that Veghash doesn't affect the amount harvested directly - instead it modifies your skill, which feeds into the amount harvested. It isn't quite the same thing as there isn't a 1:1 ratio of skill to amount

Yep. It only adds a bonus to your harvesting skill mod. While the harvesting mod does seem to increase the amount you harvest as you go up in it, it seems to get less effective as you get higher (possibly). I really think this needs some testing, though. I just hope I can find someone with Novice Scout to go hunting with me when I get on.

Disband the group, then try. due to your mod, you should get roughly 3x.

I am just curious, what do you base this on?

I don't have anything to back this up because it came to me by word of mouth, but I was told that the best Veghash would give you a 15% boost to harvest rates.

I had the exact same experience the other day. There was a poor lost soul running aimlessly around doaba asking where all the people where and stating that he was a brand new player. I paid for scout and combat training for him, and we went out hunting.

With this new publish you get those messages telling you when someone harvests and for how much. Was really really distressing how much he was getting in relation to me. He didn't even have any hunting skills at all fer chrise sakes.

Yes, more info please. To my knowledge, the group harvesting reduction is a flat 60%. So it should be the same relative amount of resources in and out of a group. And, after disbanding, I make just a bit more than the two of us combined (1.0*0.6 + 0.5*0.6 = 0.9, which is not far off from what I was seeing. Ungrouped, I would get around 26 hides, grouped we got around 24). I still haven't had a chance to test this more (it can be quite hard to arrange for two people to be on at the same time across multiple time zones) but has anyone else hada look? If the next correspondent wants, I can try and log into TC and act as the Novice Scout (you should be able to get Master Ranger from a terminal), although we might have a bit of trouble killing stuff.

Well, I finally managed to get another Novice Scout hunting with me. The results are actually worse than I would have thought. But it might help explain what is going on. OK, here is what I found:

  • The Novice Scout was 0/0/0/0 and a Wookie.

  • I am a BothanMaster Ranger.

  • We were grouped (they couldn't easily kill the creatures on their own so I couldn't get individual results, I didn't want to risk a death).

  • We were on Yavin and killed quite a few giant and normal crystal snakes.

  • Arepresentative sample of a Giant Crystal Snake, scout got 43, ranger got 77, CL 31.

  • Arepresentative sample of a CrystalSnake, scout got31, ranger got 56, CL 25.

  • These numbers are very close to what you would expect if the harvested amount was (1.0 + harvest mod/100)*base amount (novice scout has +15 to harvesting, master ranger has +100, I think).

  • This is similar to what was seen on easier creatures but with a larger amount of total resources making it easier to see what was going on.

  • This would also explain the difference seen between Master Scout and Master Ranger. This would be a 1.5 harvest amount vs. 2.0, meaning master ranger harvest 4/3rds as much as a Master Scout (about 30% more). If this is correct, a Master Scout would be expected to harvest 1.5 times what a novice scout does (50% more).

The above seems like a plausible implementation. I don't believe it is reasonable. What might be an easy fix is to make the harvested amount equal to (harvest mod/15)*base amount. This would give a Master Ranger 6.667 times as much as a Novice Scout. This would also give a Master Scout 3.333 times what a Novice Scout gets. Anda Master Ranger would get double the resources of a Master Scout. The main reason for this suggestion is that it should be a very simple change. More complex solutions might be better but they would involve more programming and processing time. Any thoughts?
