Having been a Master Ranger for ... A very very long time, I am often confronted with training requests. There are two that are actually rather rare, and after I talk with people and tell them what I expect in order to train the positions of Master Scout and Master Ranger, well … I have been laughed at, and more often then not the answer is thanks but no thanks.

I thought I would share my trials, in case anyone found them interesting. It is my little way to make the Ranger place in the universe more than a grind and a tag.

Note: My home is on Endor so most of the trials are based there. Some of this information may be out of date due to changes in the system.

Enjoy!

Master Chrachiir’s Trial: Master Scout

Before the trial, the candidate is to collect Avian Bone containers of 1000 units from Naboo, Corellia, and Tatooine; a Jar of Foraged Berries (for the tester’s lunch, I like berries); a Blue Fish (whole); enough resources for creating traps (don’t get caught short); getting missions for a Forrest Gurreck lair (may require a group to get it) and a Squill Prong lair; the coordinates of the Gungan Shield Generator on Naboo.

For the entirety of the trial, the Candidate my not use armor. A single weapon of choice is permitted.

The Candidate will go to an agreed upon location, set up a multi-person camp and wait for the tester. Upon the tester’s arrival the bone containers, the fish and the berries will be given to the tester to validate the contents. It is there that an interview will be held to determine the reasons for seeking the title. Upon completion of the interview, the trials begin.

The Candidate and Tester will go to the Gurreck location where the candidate will milk the Gurreck. The milk will be given to the tester to validate the results.

The Candidate and tester will then go to the squill prong lair. The Candidate will attack the lair with his fist. Using only traps and without burst running, the Candidate is to evade the combat. Killing the creatures results in failure.

The Candidate and the tester then travel to the smuggler’s outpost. The candidate runs from the Smugglers Outpost on Endor to the Research facility in under 30 minutes.

From the Research outpost, The Candidate will be given a set of waypoints. The candidate is to travel to each waypoint in sequence without using Mask scent. They may use traps to assist in evading difficult situations. Death equates in failure.

Upon successful conclusion of the route, the title of Master Scout is granted.

The Master Ranger Trial

During the writing of this I came to the realization that, much to my dissapointment, many of the aspects of this trial must be reworked because of new game features. Recommendations are greatly apprciated. I haven't had to run a Master Ranger Trial in over 6 months, so /shrug

The basic tasks for the trial:

Tracking: Man Hunting (find the target in limited time: /findfriend has made this too easy. Needs to be reworked) what it use to be -

The Candidate will inform the Tester when he is on the planet at the Smuggler’s outpost. The Tester will then arrive on the planet and begin traveling. The Candidate will then attempt to track down the tester. The Tester will be on foot. The Candidate will have 30 minutes to find him.

Survival: Create the High Tech field base kit and hold the interview there

Exploration: What is the name of the Dowkuwah alone on his island (it's an Endor thing)

Hunting: Gather 5000 units of designated resources that are very difficult to get (eg. Endorian Wooly) from Dathomere, Dantooine and

Endor (been a while since I have gone resource hunting. I am just not that kind of Ranger, and i am a poor one because of it. I need to find the challenging ones. Trying to force hunting groups)

Camo Kits: Guide three members of a group who will not use Mask Scent safely along a route designated by landmarks instead of way points. Route will use references that can be found using Tracking when getting close enough (ewok villages etc.)

Sweet! Sounds like fun (though the Scout trials are harder than the Ranger trials). I would assume you only attarct the RP crowd, but it does sound fun . The find friend thing is avoidable by removing the candidate's name from your friends list.

This is how Mastering a profession should be, not the horrid AP system!

This is some really creative stuff. I've always felt there should be a themepark type adventure given out to achieve the master title (offered by the appropriate guild hall perhaps). Things like this make learning the profession and participating in it that much more fun.

Great work, I was thinking of something like this (though not so in-dept) to help noobs learn the game. Fantastic work!! They should make trails like this if you want to get the last skill in a tree, so that you can show that you really understand it.

The Ranger Trials are admittedly incomplete and I am reworking them. They were much harder early on in game development. The scout one is the only one that hasn't needed to change. If I ever put together a full Ranger test, then I will make sure to post it.

But like I said, too often I get the response of "um ... no thanks".

In order to make this work, a community would have to be started cuz the average player will always say "um, no thanks." U need a group of dedicated Rpers to do this.

Starsider: Blakk Star (Lost Child of the Ras'ka)- Master Ranger/TKM
Ahazi: Kojo Anonkye (Master of Ras'kan Martial Arts)- TKM/Stickfighter(Master Fencer)

Love it. Something like this really adds credit to the "Master" title that's given out, basically, freely. This is how master should be attained instead of spamming a Teaching XXXX macro. I'd search you out for teaching if you were on my server.

Keep up the good work. To those that shy away from it, that's their loss as you're doing a great service to the community by educating up and comers and not just passing out titles for XP.

Trash AXP and go with "Masters Trials."

Chrachiir,

Had the pleasure of meeting you last night. You trained my character in Advanced Trapping IV. I would be more than interested in sharing a right of passage experience to Master Ranger.

It may be a little more time, currently my character is 4/1/4/4, and I do not like "grinding" camping. I camp when I need to, when it is fun and when it makes sense. But I'm planning on spending some more time on Tattooine now and leading some more hunting parties to make it a fun experience.

I'll keep you posted on progress and hopefully we can make this happen, sounds fun!

Okay, folks. I need some help on this. The Ranger Trial obviously needs some help. I want it to be as challenging for a Ranger as the Scout Trial is for a Scout. Gimme some ideas. The following things need to be tested:

1) Exploration (grid coordinates of very distinct, hard to find locations on all of the Adventuring planets. Coordinates that are not easily available.)

2) Trapping (probably something like the Scout Trapping excercise but with much meaner beasties, recommendations please)

3) Camping (set up the HTFBK)

4) Hunting (Need creature resources that will push the limits of the Ranger's hunting, almost inevitably forcing a hunting party. Need the rare harvests. Any suggestions?)

5) Tracking 4 (need a really good and imaginitive test here. This is one of the identifying aspects.)

6) Land Navigation

7) Escort duties (combination of rescue and camo kits? Camo kits will have to be on Endor of course.)

To give you an idea of what I am looking for:

eg. Combine Trapping/Camo kits/Rescue by having one of three escorted people attack a lair alongalongescortjourney. Without killing the creatures and while keeping the escorts alive, evade the combat so that all are safe.

I would really like a lot of feed back. That way I can pick and choose. ideally I would love to have "you will be tested on 5 of the 15 following tasks". I can do it on my own, but my imagination is limited.

Any ideas?

For trapping, try having a buffed and armored player attack a rancor lair (or something similar--big creatures but not too fast) and have your trainee /rescue them and escape the agro with traps.

For hunting, maybe something like a 1k stack of Tat avianor similarhard to collect resource? It's not hard to kill the stuff but it shows dedication (and it doesn't force the Ranger to have a combat profession).

The escort might be a fun one. You have a person walk unarmored and unbuffed in a straight line for something like 5k. If they die, the mission is failed. You can add limits to the skills used by the testee but it's probably not all that necessary.

I might consider combining exploration and tracking. Give the player a region name (like the dune sea) where they have to find another player. This shows that they know a little bit about the game's regions (or know where to find the information) and that they know how to use tracking. You could just make them track a rare spawn but that relies on the spawn system cooperating.

Another possible test for exploration: Find a point on the map that is at least this high or low (where this is the height of a tall location you've found on that planet). This is something that is unlikely to be listed anywhere. It might be a bit hard to find a tall enough spot (and I don't envy the person looking for the tallest spot) but it would require people to go out and explore the planet a bit. You can use the ctrl-shift-g ui item to tell you the height at the position you are standing.

Personally, I'd recommend keeping the tasks on the simple side. You want people to be able to achieve them even if they only have Ranger 4/4/4/4 (i.e. no combat profession) and are on a slow internet connection. They should show knowledge of the profession anddedication to it. You don't want to make it something along the lines of "Trap a krayt dragon while unarmored and unbuffed and you can't let him kill you."
