Thread: PvP vs. PvE Does it have to be that way.

It seems to me that some people on this forum hate the idea of PvP. I understand that it isn't fun for all people. Some people all so seem to go into fits when the idea of improving the ranger profession by adding some PvP skills to it. Once again I understand the fear that the ideas for improving PvE would be pushed aside if PvP was added. But does it truly have to be that way? Can't both sides be catered to? We are a combat profession, if I am wrong let me know. But we are the only profession that, on our own cannot defend itself period.

Some say we are support, and I say what is your definition of support? In the military many different types of units support each other. Maybe I just don't get it, but to me it doesn't seem like it is a stretch for us to want PvP skills. Some say if I want to engage in PvP become a BH. First that doesn't seen very supportive of the ranger community, second my idea of PvP for a ranger is not what a BH does. Bounty Hunters hunt people. Rangers don't. Alright I can live with that. But a Master Ranger (that profession on its own not combined) should have some sort of defense and more than just stealth. If I am overt, I should be able to set up traps which defend my camp from the enemy. I should be able set up traps that hurt those that want to hurt me. Bounty hunter traps are for capturing bounty, rangers should get traps that protect them, and allow them to hurt there enemies.

Perhaps what I need is a new hybrid profession, but that is a horrible thought. We all ready have mobile bases, they just need to be improved. We already have traps, they just need to be expanded. It doesn't take much for us to have PvE and PvP abilities. I personally want to engage in guerilla warfare, an I think that the ranger is the perfect elite profession for it.

We can have both guys if we really I want it, and I really think it is absurd to say we are just hunters of creatures. We are masters of our enviroments, and to be a effective combatant in guerilla warfare that is what you need to be. If you don't want to participate in PvP that is fine, but this game does cater to PvP, so we shouldn't deny it. If you just want to do PvE thats fine but shouldn't give people in our profession the choice? You want to make the ranger community a stronger one, add some PvP to it. Even if you hate PvP this is a good idea because it will make us stronger.

i dont hate the idea of pvp. it is just not for me. i'm not going to hender others wants and desires because they go against my own. i may have come across like that and i appologize. all i was doing were putting my opinions out. i also dont mean to seem unsupportive. if you have a dream or vision go for them and stand up for them by any mean you see are necessary. i refered to the bounty hunter issue because hunting humans for bounty is there cup of tea. i wasnt saying you shoudl go bh to be good at pvp. from what ive heard from bounty hunters is that they suck in pvp.

rangers at this point arent a combat profession. we are support. im ex-infantry in rl so my opinion may may be baised, but throughout histroy you have 2 main elements in war/combat. you have your assaulters then you have those that support them. ie cooks, docs, etc, etc. in the current military their are professions that specialize in setting up forward or rear(whatever the case may be) command posts (htfb for pvp). i agree with you that there needs to be an improvement to our camps. even if it meant just amking them defensive like they were meant to be. taking that one step farther it would be nice for out camps to wrok like buildings. that would be ideal for pvp. you go in and you cant get shot at or engage in battle inside the structure.

I agree that we need to look to PvP as well as PvE. If weare going to be an only PvE Elite profession, with the skill points we have to invest, we should be hugely overpowered in the wild, no one should match us.

The dev's have said that PvP traps (if implemented) would be BH only so that might put out that fire. But I do like the idea of working on some idea that help both PvE and PvP together. I hope the stealth idea is something that can be implemented and the dev's are interesed in. If not we need some other way to get involved in the GCW.

Shaw,

If you want people to get behind the idea of PvP in this community it will take some work to convince them that PvP is a viable option for Ranger. As it stands right now, PvP for the Rangers isn't a necessary thing. Maybe you can answer some questions for me and we can see where it is you are coming from. So if you will, please answer these questions.

1. Do you think that the Ranger Profession on its own should be a viable PvP profession?

2. What role do you see the Ranger playing in PvP?

3. Do you believe that the idea of being a creature hunter is the best course for the Ranger profession?

4. If you could design the Ranger profession to be a strong PvP profession, what one element would be at the top of your list to include?

I want to try and work with you on this bud. I hate to break it to you, but you are coming on a bit strong in your posts. The reason some in this community are against PvP is because of the negativity and the block headed people that PvP tends to attract. The Rangers have earned a well deserved reputation for being constructive and helpful in the community. We would all hate to have that tarnished.

So, just tone it down a bit and lets take this one step at a time. If you work with the community and present some creative ideas for PvP in the Ranger profession, I guarantee you that people will help you develop them. They may not agree, and they may not necessarily believe they should be included in this profession, but they will help you. Just work with the community. Not against it.

Your friendly neighborhood Ranger,

\Ran"ger\, n. 1. One who ranges; a rover; sometimes, one who ranges for plunder; a roving robber.

That is one definition of RANGER I dare you to search the dictionary's online, because there are 10 different definitions. So, with that said....I know for me the wandering being one with NATURE works best. For someone else it might be different. I know that in this community RANGERS have embraced the WANDERER kind of attitude. No one ever said a RANGER RIFLEMAN wasnt a great PvP'r. But we on this forum have choosen to take the path we have and so we post on it!! Your opinion is just that and weread it. Im not saying your right or wrong......just not my path...but we must be one in telling DEV's what we want!!

I would love to answer your questions.

1. Do you think that the Ranger Profession on its own should be a viable PvP profession? No, I see us a kind of a hybrid. We should havetraps (I know what the devs say but I don't care) that work in PvP. Maybe trap is the wrong word, I want ground based anti-personal obstacles to be included with our traps. I definetly don't see us as face to face PvP participants but I think we should have "traps" that can hurt players. I think we are viable in PvP because of our camps. They should be mobile bases which we can fortify against our enemies.

2. What role do you see the Ranger playing in PvP? I see us as exactly what we are, outdoorsman. We would effect battles with our recon, traps, and mobile bases. I see rangers working with commandos, we go in set booby traps, disable defenses, do recon. The commando does the dirty work. We build our encampments and place defense around them, we conceal ourselves in our surroundings and tell our groups when the enemy is coming. If we need to we can even launch a sneak attack, as a last ditch effort.

3. Do you believe that the idea of being a creature hunter is the best course for the Ranger profession? Yes and no.I want our hunting skils to be one of our great skills, but it shouldn't be our only skill. All aspects of being an outdoorsman are important to me, but I don't want to say well the devs will only let us be hunters.

4. If you could design the Ranger profession to be a strong PvP profession, what one element would be at the top of your list to include? The ultimate element I see for us to have a strong role in PvP, is anti-personal trapping. Booby-traps, our PvP traps would damage groups and alter troop movements. Enemies would think twice before chasing a ranger, or attacking his group.

I'm not trying to work against the community, I just see that many have abandoned PvP and I don't think that is fair. Thank you for wanting to help me and I hope we can work together.

I'm a master rifleman and 0030 ranger. I created my character to be a hunter. I spend a lot of time hunting creatures for hide and meat. It's made me rich (in-game, hehe)and given me lots of hours of fun.

I don't PVP much, but when my PA's bases are being attacked and the call goes out to man battle stations, I am right there, killing as many rebel terrorists as I can. I don't have a PVP template--that's not what I made my character for--so I usually end getting DB'd more times than I DB. But I usually manage to get some licks in, and frankly, it's pretty fun on the rare occasion when IDB someone who clearly should have beaten me.

My point is, there's nothing preventing us rangers from PVPing when we want to. We all have at least some combat skills. If I wanted to PVP all the time, I wouldn't have used my skill points on scout/ranger. But I'm not going to walk away from a fight, either.

Just so you know, you should be able to edit the second post out (as you are a community elder). It just helps keep the clutter down.

Did you know you can get through all of scout and ranger without having an extra combat profession. I'm in a guild and the majority of my xp for scout/ rangerI gained just by throwing traps and harvesting, while my friends got combat xp.....

Hmmm what does that tell you, while most of us (myself included) have a combat profession as well, there is room in the ranger skill tree for some sort of combat skill. This argument that we as rangers use our brains instead of brawn is valid, except I don't have to be a ranger to do that either.I could very easily be a fry cook and rifleman and do most of the same things that we rangers use now.Ranger as a profession needs some sort of bonus, weapon or whatever for PvP and fighting NPCs. So lets get over the we are better than everyone attitude we have right now becasue we have to use our head, and realize it is ok to have some PvP put into the ranger trees.

I would not mind a PvP role, but I think we should have a bit of both. Hence my stealth in PvP proposal, it brings our abilities to PvP but does not "invent" any.
