Im afraid this is one of those issues that every mayor will agree with you on, but the devs simply dont have the time or dont want to do anything about it.
Its a bit like asking who here thinks there should be skills in the Master politician box. Surprise! Everyone does. Surprise the devs are not doing anything about it.

haha too true... that empty box is sad
I just hate having to keep explaining to people the dangers of /grantzoning and why I won't let them have it. The worst part is they don't even want that ability, they just want /cityban for invaders. Too bad the 2 skills are tied together.
Pluseven for the militia members who actually are supposed to help place buildings it doesn't work right. They can grant zoning but are not zoned themselves?? How messed up is that...

Militia is not an appropriate group to have /grantzoning. The militia needs the combat bonuses for fighting in town and the ability to /cityban. They have nothing to do with structure placement. They are there to defend the town.
Please create an additional grouping called “City Planner” or “Mayor’s Aid”. The players in this group would be already zoned and could grant zoning to others (unlike the current system where you can only grant to others but not place structures yourself - truly an awful design). This group can help add new people and buildings when the Mayor is offline.
There definitely needs to be a distinction between the two groups of abilities. Many people in town need /cityban and fighting bonuses. Like maybe 2 people need to be able to place buildings. With the way it’s currently implemented I have to tell people they can’t be on Militia, even though I wish they were for defensive reasons.
Anyone else find themselves in the same boat?

also 24 hours is a bit long, it should revert after a single placement. I also belive they should bring back citywarn, its a griefing tactic, potentially, but then again, its our city, if we dont want rebel coverts in there, we should be able to forceably remove them. If we have non citizens in the city they will get killed, and then decide nto to come back, its not that hard is it.. and htey cant attack until the combat eef is gained anywyas.

Stronghold without Militia is useless.
Militia with /grantzoning open door to city destroying grief
Stronghold is either useless or creates a security risk.
Given that Stronghold is at bast useless andat worse opens the door to the destruction of the city it is something that must change and isn't hard to do.

I'm definatly in the same boat as you. Everytime i add a militia member i have to make them promise not to use grantzoning, and often they still dont listen.

I just don't even use it. After all the work I've put into making sure my city has grown properly, so that everything is well placed and thought out, and so we have a nice big city center, there is just no way I'm going to open up a huge hole in my master plan. Its really a shame too since I also lead the local guild in the city, and I have to explain to my brothers in arms why they can't be in the militia, and then they just think I don't trust them. All of that because of one stupid little goof, courtesy of SOE.

I've been thinking of starting a city, but with all the things I've read recently it seems more of a hassle than its worth. This thread is one of my main concerns. Does that mayor recieve a message when someone places a structure in the city, or if someone is granted zoning rights by a militia member?
If not, that may be the solution, have the mayor recieve a message and would have to authorize the zoning rights.
Is the mayor notified at all? Seems to me that the mayor should know of everything that goes on in the city.

Mayor is notified of every structure placed and removed within the city limits (it's actually sometimes a pain, as every placement causes 2-3 emails to be sent to the mayor). The only exception is when the mayor him/herself places non-deedable decorations (statues, fountains, streetlamps).
