Thread: An alternative method to spamming... (semi-long post)

Hello politicians, mayors, and everyone else! I just wanted to share an experience/epiphany(sp?) I had recently with all of you... (please forgive me if this idea has been posted - we all know how well the search works )

Anyway, while on a quest, I managed to make my way to a hotel in Keren, Naboo. Inside this hotel was an NPC vendor of a type I've never seen before. I looked at his wares to find the strangest things I've ever seen on a vendor! Sandcrawlers, treasure chests, lambda shuttles, factional honor guards, and much more. The prices were very resonable as well! 15k for a full-sized sandcrawler?! Sign me up!

I later discovered that these are all "rental" items that will *poof* after 8 hours from purchase, but this wasn't until after I had purchased a treasure chest and a sandcrawler for a total of 30k. (OMG - items that actually *poof*! Need to get some rental houses for inactive citizens! )

Anyway, my PA and I had been debating on starting a city on Tatooine for some time now, and after seing the reactions of my PA mates to the sandcrawler and sparking treasure box, a great idea occurred to me as to how to get new players into our city!

We bought another sandcrawler, another sparking treasure box, and a group of jawas/droids and placed all of them as close to our PA hall as we could. The treasure box holds 20 items, so we took a collection from the PA members and put all kinds of stuff that was pretty much junk to us, but would be somewhat rare for newbies - swoop deeds, ship chassis (undeeded), weapons, resources, paintings, etc. (Fortunately for us, the treasure box is rigged so that a player is only allowed to take ONE item from the box - further attempts at looting anything from the box will be unsuccessful).

With everything setup and prepared, I had my PA mates wait by the treasure box, then I took a short journey to Mos Eisley and sent an email with a waypoint to the treasure box to as many unguilded newbies as the TO box would allow, and then followed that up with another to a completely different set of newbies - probably about 25 players in total. The email stated something to the effect of this:

"Congratulations! You have been selected to participate in the first Imperium Protectorate [ed: Name of PA] Treasure Race! The rules are as follows: Get to the attached waypoint as fast as possible and get your choice of item from the treasure box! Hurry before the greedy people get there first!"

After sending the emails, I hightailed it back to the treasure chest as fast as I could catch a shuttle and ride my speeder to the waypoint. When I got there - 3 newbies had already beaten me to the chest! They all thanked us for the generosity and were awed by the sandcrawler asking where I got it and stuff. While we had their attention, we politely asked them if they would also like a free house and to join our PA or our city as a founding member...

We had about 15 people that were invited show up to the treasure box, and 13 of them certainly did accept our invitation to join the PA *and* the city! (The two that didn't were rebel RP'ers, so go figure... they weren't so high-and-mighty as to not help themselves to an item from the box though! )

Apparently, the sandcrawler could be seen from quite some distance, so we also had about20 additional people from our neighboring city come and see what was up with the sandcrawler, so I ended up having to restock the treasure box, but hey... it was BIG FUN and sure the hell beats spamming at a starport!

Thank you for listening to my little story.

Good idea!

Interesting about the treasure boxes only allowing a person to take one item from it... I hadn't heard that before, but if it's true, that makes them a ton more useful! Thanks for sharing.

I personnaly set up turrets with some kind words near the shuttle like "the mayor wish you a happy day"....

Automatically remove rebels from sight ^^

I also often set up things like lottery droids. Citizens do love it ! It's another possibility with the loot box.

BTW, interessting point if you can only loot on item, i'm gonna put backpaks inside so that no one will know what they loot

Never hesitate to take decorations and set them up everywhere.
I already rented a NPC actor and an imperial flag. I've set them up near the shuttle, dressed the NPC with some imperial officier clothes and set up the text "remember to vote for the administrator" with a beckon gesture.

Everything that could make the city fun is in the mayor's hand. And those rentals are great to bring some more life and fun.

Some day, the will be configurable with the ability to react to keywords so that it could be even more fun....

Oh, that's a good idea too! Too bad that the backpacks themselves will probably take up a space each, so you'll only get like 10 items in there, but still - that will make for some mystery behind the looting

You guys were correct in that the mayor has all the tools to make the city fun. I haven't toyed with the lottery droids or actors, but I'm thinking that I will now - also anything else I haven't tried out yet. There's quite a few interesting possabilities(sp?) that can be done to make our cities more than just a place to store your stuff and get trained!

Thank you all for your kind responses. I'll post more if I come up with any other good ideas

Awesome idea, I'll have to give this a try myself. I like sending them an email with the wp too, very handy and cuts down on the spam in spatial. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, great ideas everybody! I will definitely try some versions of this at some point! It is all about going the extra mile to make things interesting.

Uhh, but I never heard about all this renting stuff until just now. Are there many places to find this stuff? According to the original post Keren has some, are there other places?

Hehe, I don't know, renting just sounds like too much fun! And since it is temporary, it lends to keeping things fresh and interesting.

Thanks for the ideas and for any further information on where to find rentable items.

If anybody else has ideas or experience using these techniques, please share! it is very interesting to hear what people have come up with.

You can get them from Event Coordinators located in the Hotels of major cities. The Player Events Perks page has much of the information on it. There are more things available now than what is listed there, but it gives you a good general idea.
