Thread: STOP RECRUITING CITIZENS AFTER 85???

So once the big cities hit 85 citizens will they leave the rest of the non-citizen players for the smaller cities can grow too? I mean there will not really be any reason for them to gain more citizens. Although I'm sure a big city would be very appealing to many players...I'm just asking will the SPAM recruiting at major startports let up? It is hard to compete with someone yelling that they already have a shuttleport when some of us havn't even passed the 'outpost' level. I guess maybe we are too picky about who we ask to join but our mayor knows each and everyone of us and she's really cool, I suppose it would be pretty hard to know 85 people really well when player cities havn't been around for a month. Do most mayors make it their goal to know their citizens, or is all they care about growing fast and getting xp?

I predict that most of the large cities and metropolii (a word?) will stop that kind of recruiting. After they are that big interested players will come to them.

Try recruiting someone to Rori when our Naboo has over 30 cities....

Shadow City on Dantooine is at 40 people and we are happy with that. So we don't have a shuttle, no big deal. Vehicles comes out in a few weeks and i am could we know almost everyone really well. We are not in a rush to grow, it will happen when it happens. Better to know everyone then pay and bribe people to move in to find out a few days later thay they are a pain in the butt and don't listen to anything.

we are at 100 and pushing on. However, we are guild only so it will be driven by the size of the guild although a lot more guildies still need to set up there. As the other person says we will be pushing past 200 I would hope which means a much bgiger tax base and income to further improve our city.

The city I live in has never done any recruiting beyond telling anybody that expresses an interest that they are welcome to join us. Heck, spam bots are KOS to our militia. We are not PA based, or faction based. We are not near any POIs, nor really much of interesting. We are about 3k out from the nearest NPC city. There is no central body that brings everyone together aside from the city.

We had nearly 80 people before the city growth. I haven't checked the count as of today. The cantina has live entertainment the better part of the day and quite a few people sitting around and talking.

The only thing we had going for us is we were an established city since the first month of the game. Though as to that, probably less than half of the current residents were residents of our city before. I've been keeping the map so I have seen first hand how the city has grown.

We have never hidden ourselves and have had many events in our city in the past. We were proudly one of the first cities on the map on the planet we were on, the first city on our planet with a cantina, and the first city on our map with a shuttleport. I don't know if that really made a difference, but I suppose it could have. Those that waited until they were level 3 or 4 before revealing themselves may not have as big a pull.

Perhaps you need to look at who your city is and what you stand for, and why you exist, if you want to attract people. And remember, many cities will fail. It's up to you to come up with something to set yours apart from the rest.

We already have 160 some houses placed and are continueing to grow. but then we also have a guild with 350 some people supporting it as well, and everyone wants in.

we will eventually create other guild cities on other planets if we are able to (the city limit may not let us of course)

But then our argument is why are there so many little towns on the map that are trying to gain more followers? If they want to be big they should have formed a PA and started working on this from day one.

they are taking away from us now and then as well, even though we only lose 2 or 3 a week and gain 10. So it is not a problem right now.

Really though, I think 150 or so is a nice buffer zone for a city. you can collect more taxes and balance the budget at a lower cost to the citizens. Plus you don't have to worry about falling to a lower level if too many people leave at once. But why would a person join your city with high taxces and few bennefits, when they could join a big one and pay low taxes and get everything.

I don;t mean to put small cities down, but they don't stand a chance the way this game is designed.

My advice to you is to just accept everybody though and then kick out the troublemakers. it works for us and we are all friends too. although i must admit I only know 45 people at the most. But we have groups within groups and we do pretty much always know what is going on through our 12 leaders.

I don't see how you can come up with the conclusion that "little cities don't have a chance" Sure, 160 must be nice, but in reality you only really need 55 people who really enjoy living in your city. In our city, Gens Urbis on Dantooine we went for a cool location as opposed to a place with unlimited expansion possibilites. We live in a small valley with a lake. About 1/4 of our city area is in the no build zone for the Rebel base! We are growing at a nice rate through word of mouth and have never spammed anyone. I can see a large city having an advantage perhaps when you get a specialization (industrial society or something) but besides that there is NO reason why a city of 55, or even 35 could not be considered a success. If people are living there and enjoying it that is all you need.

I guess I was talking about the financial and longevity of the city.

with small numbers you will have trouble drawing in others since you will eother have to foot the bills yourselves or raise taxes by a lotif you want anything cool in your city. So there is a great chance you will go broke.

second, people just quit playing or move on a lot in this game with no warning and little reason. Therefore, you will not have a buffer of people to fall back on and the game will punish you financially if you fall below your cuirrent level and try to keep you city structures at the higheer levels.

so that is what i was saying.

Plus I really don't like elitist little groups that aren't friendly to anybody except their own. I deal with those people in real life and really really have a problem with it.

I don't know if that is what your group is like, but it sounds like it from what you said about being really picky.

That is why we accept everyone, and also why we don't have to beg for people to join, but why people beg to join us every day. We try to help everyone and work really hard doing just that. we demand nothing and try to give away as much as we can afford. We are in it for the people, and not for the power or the money. Of course it is a nice feeling to accomplish so much.

Bluude,

I was just trying to bring up the counterarguement (sp?) to what you were saying...no need to callus elitist! Sure people come and go, but I know pretty much everyone in town, and none of them would just pack up and leave without explaination. We do accept anyone in our city that wants to come (as long as they are not Imperial ) and offer instead of numbers a close knit community. It's the same reason that in real life some people choose to live in small towns, or small cities as opposed to moving to New York City.

I"m not getting down on big cities...they do offer advantages, like you say. I think that is really what the city specialization is aimed at (and the current costs for doing so). Having a large city IS an accomplishment. However, I don't think it is as black and white as you think. All small cities are NOT failures, and will not eventually die out. If 10 of us in my city spend a couple hours doing missions around town we can make enough to pay for the city for a couple WEEKS. So no, we are not doomed to failure

As Mayor of Avorum on Dantooine in the Chilastra Galaxy I have to ask why on earth anyone would want more than 85 people in their city? What is the point of getting to metropolis in one month after release. I think the Mayors of these cities need some discression, you obviously just let anyone join your city. My city ison the verge of rank 2 and we are growing slowly, as Mayor I like to know each and every citizen and I think it is important to get to know them a little before you let them join. I guarantee all the large cities right now have many many young immature players. And big deal, you got a shuttle port, it wont mean much when flighty players start leaving your city and with all those people eventually someone will want to run against you as mayor.

I think growing too fast too soon is a bad idea, don't expect these metropolis cities you see now to be around for a significant amount time.

Look at it this way. Our city had in excess of 100 people living in it BEFORE the city patch came out. Its been around since the birth of sunrunner and the city facilities are just an extensions to what we have been planning all along.

So I dont see nothing wrong with the way we have moved up the city ranks. In fact we still have about 1/5 of our city not covered in the radius yet and all people living in Ragnaron are TPE members. The city is a wonder to look around and even better to live in.

Your city also needs a "buffer", so that you are covered if any people leave or stop playing.

MMORPG player bases fluctuate, with new people arriving, others leaving, so you need to ensure that your city can survive.

Also, a City of 100+ people is going to be a lot more attractive to visit for variety than one of 55.
