Last week our town was duped by a guy pretending to be a noob. We set him up with a house and a discounted speederbike. I've always been friendly with new players and have offered them all the help and assistance they ask for. After placing the house for him and transferring the structure, he promptly redeeded the house. He then said he couldn't find it in his inventory. Having never redeeded a house without enough maintenance on it to reclaim the deed, I wasn't sure if what he claimed he did was possible or not. Giving him the benefit of the doubt we placed another house for him. This time I threw a couple k in maintenance just to be nice. Well, he did it again. He claimed he didn't like where it was placed. I wanted the deed back and claimed I would place it in a better location, although I had no intention of doing so. He refused and then made clear his agenda. He started laughing and swearing. Said thanks for the deeds and the bike and ran away. I don't really care, it's just a game. I just hate to see it played that way. I ended up getting a house back after I filed a CSR ticket, but I just wanted everyone to be aware of jerks posing as new players.

eek! I'm sorry that happened to you... you should try to warn other mayors on your server (perhaps not on the forums, maybe an in game email), in case that guy tries to pull something like this again

While our citizens tend to help out new people and the city welcomes them, this is the exact sort of thing that prvents me from offering incentives to move in if you need an incentive to move i then you prolly should look elseware for residence. Our incentive to move in is a nice place to live that is located right next to ft tusken nothing more. I do keep a couple spare small house deeds in stock but I dont just hand them out I make certain that the person wanting to move in is not going to pull what that guy in the orginal post did. Sorry to hear that you were griefed. That sucks.

well, you want the other guy to look like the jerk, not you... and it might be considered griefing

I'm sorry you got played, but truthfully we mayors should not have to resort to handing out freebies to meet our citizen quota... it's just sad.

I agree- ethics has a place even in game- I know of a guy who was frauding people and SOE dealt with it harshly, if SOE cannot or will not, I think we as the community should.

I would use pets, the new droids with barker module and every person willing to add this guys a thief to their house name.

It will stop fast

Our city is situated very near Keren, Naboo, and we get a lot of new players who are out running around and exploring. If they are looking to settle down with their own house, or like the idea of staying in our town to up their characters, I don't mind tossing a small round Naboo house (style 2) their way, with 1 month's maint. Total cost: 15k (including house). Sure some won't stick around, and I'll have wasted 15k, but so far 5 players whom I did this for have stuck around and become productive and fun-loving people within the game.

Even if they didn't stick around in our city and stay as residents,I hope I gave themthe leg-up they needed to get into the game further and have fun. That to me is worth more than the measly 15k I initially spent on them. My only admonition to them is to pay it forward.

sadly these people exist. I use to offer homes to people (acutally I still do sometimes hehe) usually small since I can take a loss.. anything larger they would have to pay (at least my cost on it so at a very discounted price)

out of 50+ I offer I probably lose around 4-5 homes (small ones) due to these kind of people..

Providing houses to new players has been commonplace in our city since its inception. Its not a ploy to artificially inflate our city's population (we rarely worry about ourcitizen count), but rather its how we like to welcome people into the game. It provides them a place for their items, and an incentive to log in and out of our city each day, and it reassures them that we are here to help them with the frustrations the early game of SWG can sometimes throw at a newbie. About 95% of the time it is very rewarding to both the recruit and the citizens themselves.

Does that mean we never get burned? Nope. It happens once every month or two. While a lot of people play a game like this to interact with others in a positive way and have fun doing it, there is a very annoying minority that play simply to unleash their inner a__hole. It may irk me for a moment, but I usually console myself quickly with two thoughts:

1) As I was taught by my father, never lend anything to anyone that you are not comfortable with loosing.

2) It was worth the cost of whatever was lost to get rid of a player like that.

I can not say I have ever lost two houses on the same person (editorial note: someone should seriously spank that brat's inner moppet), but I'd have to say that if two houses and a speeder got rid of him, it was worth the investment. In fact, I'd say you got away with a heck of a deal there.

oh don't get me wrong... if someone did that to me, i'll make sure he either pays me back WELL, or the entire galaxy will know about it (TC or Ahazi), but pets might not be a good way to go. most people might ignore them, and/or they'll think you're just nuts... chain mail works better

Heh, I'm actually surprised to hear of a town that doesn't give away free small homes to new citizens who need them. After we get ourselves moved around and readjusted I plan on running a bunch of those NPC missions and hiring a chef for some fruit on top of the small house deed to get a real gift (woven)basket going.
