Thread: City specializations
I am trying to figure out if any of the city specializations are worth using. They are expensive both in terms of politician xp/skill points and in terms of weekly maintenance. I find the explanations in the manual pretty weak.
- Sample Rich (70k cr/week) Will this spec only affect the results you get when manually sampling for resources? Will it also increase the xp gained when sampling? It seems like a very weak spec.
- Manufacturing Center (50k cr/week) What exactly does it mean that you get a 10% bonus to prototype assembly results? Does it directly increase the product's attributes by 10% before experimentation? Or does it just mean that you have a 10% higher chance of getting a "great success" and/or "amazing success"? This spec looks interesting as it is not that expensive.
- Research Center (125k cr/week) What exactly does it mean that you get a 15% bonus to the final result roll during experimentation? Does it directly increase the product's attributes by 15% after experimentation? Or does it just mean that you have a 15% higher chance of getting a "great success" and/or "amazing success" during experimentation? This spec better be very good in order to justify the price.
- Clone Lab (80k cr/week) The description is pretty clear on this one: cost of insurance reduced by 20%. The question is why you would want to pay 80k each week to give people this reduction? Doesn't seem worth it at all.
- Improved Job Market (80k cr/week) Again pretty clear description: 20% higher mission rewards. Might be worth it if the city is on one of the advanced planets where missions give good rewards. Could also attract more people to your city. I am still not sure if it is worth the price.
- Entertainment District (80k cr/week) Why you would want to pay 80k each week to get 10% faster entertainer healing is beyond me. Are there other advantages?
- Medical Center (80k cr/week) Seems as worthless as Entertainment District.
- Stronghold (150k cr/week) Militia members in a 'Stronghold' get a 50 point bonus to all defense rolls against other players. This does sound good - except for the price. But does this bonus only apply when the fighting occurs within the city? Have people noticed this bonus at all?
Let me know if you can clarify any of these specializations further and if you have any opinions about which is worth getting. I hope the answers will be added to the FAQ.

I've tried mostly all the City Specializations and the only one that I found was worth the bang for your buck was the Stronghold, even though it is expensive.
So can you tell me if the defense bonus only applies to fighting within the city limits?
Research Center improves the result of the "dice roll" on experimentation by 15%.
This is VERY valuable for most crafting professions, particularly for non-masters. In a research center I have observed that experimentation almost never fails (1 time in 20 maybe). Amazing successes are somewhat common (4 times in 20?) and great successes become the most common of all (perhaps 10 times in 20). Not only does this save on "schematic grinding" but it lets you assume you'll get at least a great success and put all your experiment points in at once rather than a few at a time. This significantly reduces the complexity (and the manufacturing time) of the final product while improving the quality.
Also, it will let you feel much more justified in slapping a sales tax on afterward ![]()

I was just wondering if all specializations can be used once you hit a lvl 3 city or if some, like Research Centers, had to be above a lvl 3 city. The reason I ask is that I am currently talking to a guild who is considering leaving thier current planet and city because its pretty much a ghost city now, however, thier only request is that our city become a research center, which is fine by our current citizens and something we were working for anyway. However, with our current population if the guild were to move into the city we would only be a lvl 2 city(with only 2 or 3 citizens needed to hit lvl 3). So if we are able to get the guild plus a few extra people will we be able to become a research center or am I going to have to put the old Fusou charm on and get recruiting to hit 55 people?Message Edited by ScoerFusou on 12-14-2004 08:33 AM
Nope some require rank 4. I know for a fact research center has to be rank 4. Unfortunately as I was posting this I checked the FAQ and it only lists the specializations but not their corresponding ranks.
These are all the specializations from the FAQ:
* Cloning - 80k
* Stronghold - 150k
* Manufacturing - 50k (?)
* Research - 125k
* Medical - 80k
* Entertainment - 80k
* Job Market - 80k
* Sample Rich - 70k
And here are all the specializations from the player cities guide (Notice the two I put in red):
Sample Rich - 70k cr / week Sampling in the city provides 20% more resources and a 10% greater chance of finding resources.
Manufacturing Center - 50k credits / week Crafting done in a 'Manufacturing Center' earns a 10% bonus to prototype assembly results, significantly reducing the chance of failures.
Research Center - 125k credits / week Any experimentation done within a 'Research Center' is enhanced. A 15% bonus to the final result roll is added during the experimentation phase of crafting.
Clone Lab - 80k credits / week The cost of clone insurance in a city with the 'Clone Lab' specialization is reduced by 20%.
Improved Job Market - 80k credits / week Missions taken in a city with an 'Improved Job Market' grant a 20% increase to their rewards.
Entertainment District - 80k credits / week Entertainer healing is 10% more effective in an 'Entertainment District'.
Medical Center - 80k credits / week Medical healing is 10% more effective in a 'Medical Center'.
Stronghold - 150k credits / week A 'Stronghold' has trained its militia members to the peak of their abilities in the methods of tactical defense. Militia members in a 'Stronghold' get a 50 point bonus to all defense rolls against other players.
Industrial Society - 200k cr / week An 'Industrial Society' gains the bonuses of both the 'Manufacturing Center' and 'Research Center' specializations. Master politicians get this.
Scientific Society - 175k cr / week A 'Scientific Society' gains the bonuses of both the 'Medical Center' and 'Entertainment District' specializations. Master politicians get this.
The two in red are currently not available. They used to be avaialable with our master box but due to a couple of issues they took them out.
If anyone could plug in rank numbers next to these it would help out since it seems our FAQ does not have them.

dont know if anyone mentioned this but u need theskill box to be able to set specializations as well
Yea I knew i needed the poli skill and I should have it in a few weeks. The only thing I couldn't find was what city rank you needed for a research center.I couldn't find a list of city rank either, just what you foundDoc, thanks for clearing up research center for me. If someone could finish the list it might be helpful to other people.
