Thread: Advice on running against an incumbent

Heres the deal on the council, I am setting it up like the Supreme Court, or the US Senate, where a Tie cannot happen.

namely, there are 6 council members and the mayor (3 council members from each guild + mayor). Mayor does not vote unless the council deadlocks. The Council has incentive to try and agree, and if they dont, the impasse can be circumvented. If a COucil member abstains, there can still me a majority in the COuncil w/o callingin the Mayor's vote.

I considered attempting to cut some kind of deal with the Mayor but I ran into quite a bit of resistance, thus cutting a deal with him was not an option. Any deal would have been 'do things the same way'. and that didnt cut it for me.
?

1. The council members are chosen by their guild
2. this ensures that the decisons made by the council reflect the largest portion of the Citizens possible
3. It makes it so citizens dont have to waste time in on-line meetings discussing everything..they can talk to council members or the mayor about their concerns, and let them deal with it. If a public meeting is neeed then one can be called.
4. It put the onus of attendandce on the council members, not the citizens
5. It encourages the most active members of the city to take part in its operation (rather than hand it over to a zombie account)

Oh yea, this is a more difficult way to run a government, but it also brings the most benefit.

Oh make no mistake, I did try to field these idea with the Mayor ahead of time, and was pretty much told to take a hike, things are just fine.

So thus the run for Mayor (I would rather have gotten him to go along with the idea but as a founding mayor he is very set in his ways, and is playing the 'things have been just fine' card. (of course I talk to lots of the citzens too, who say no, things need to be different, thus I run for office). Also, not many people are willing to run against a city founder, they are kinda held on a pedastal, and people tend to act like you kicked their puppy if you go against the founder.

Yea working with the mayor would be the easy way, but then again the mayor has to want to work with you. In may case the mayor told me not to let the door hit me on the way out. SO the hard way it is then.

I guess I am suprised by the number of Master Politicians who have ZERO will or desire to play the role of a Politician.

Personally I think a Council is a MUST if you are going to have multiple guilds in the same town. People suck at communicating with each other and leaving things to get passed by word of mouth is a guarantee that hard feelings will arise about decisions that get made. Unilateral decisions have the same effect.

Glad to hear some one show up with a working council..that will be most helpful

I'm an exception to that post. My guild/99% of my city is made up of posters on the SWGCraft.com forums. We all decided to come together from various servers and attempt to take over a galaxy. While voting on which server to take over, I was nominated to take over as mayor/guild leader with about 99% of the vote (I voted for someone else).

So I was a mayor/guild leader before even having a toon on Infinity.

Well I will say that, although I listen to my citizens (all 2 of them who are active /sigh My city isn't really getting off to a good start, is it?), I also wrote a constitution. In the constitution, which all new citizens must read and agree to, no one is allowed to run against me. I suppose it's a choice on the part of the mayor whether they want their position to be challenged or not. I've made sure that people know my choice from the outset.

You have to be very carful when running against a mayor who is firmly entrenched in his city and does not wish to yield control to anybody.

There is very little that can be done (without contacting a CSR) to prevent him from causing lots of problems for the city if he feels he is sufficiently challenged. If it is clear that he will lose an election, it is not unheard of for mayors to pull up the city hall rather than give someone else a victory. Be very careful. You might be better off just sucking up your pride and leaving the race if you fear that something like that would happen.

Yeah, this is true, it has happened in the past. But contacting CSRs does help with this problem. It's pretty universally recognized as "griefing" and WILL be acted upon by CSRs.

So, since it's been brought up, and if things get this ugly, here's what you do:

If the current Mayor ever actually makes a threat that they will destroy the City Hall if they are in danger of losing the election... /report them! This basically sends the most recent chat conversation to the CSRs. And it is important to have proof before they will take any action.

After you send the report, immediately file a CSR ticket, further explaining the situation, the threat, and that you used the /report command.

Like I said, hopefully it won't come to this, but if it does, now you are prepared.

Well I dont think the current Mayor would ever do anything like that. He is a pretty sane guy, stubborn perhaps but I know he would never ,ever do anything like that.

Just an update, the incumbent mayor decided not to run, and some other interested parties stepped up, and we have a 3-way race going on.

Its pretty invigorating to have an actual , real election going on. Cant say its easy, and I cant say it hasnt had its rough moments but its really cool to see the HUGE turnout the town is having for this election. The city is showing that its alive, and not full of ghost accounts. (we have a 48% turnout so far, which by American standards is pretty darn good, and by SWG standards is simply amazing)

Oh and I was asked what town this is, but I think the asker of the question already knows ;-) I would say specifically but I dont belive its wise to call out names here as I dont want to usher in outside influences into what is a local affair. Our cities politics belong to the vast majority who are members of the guilds that call it home (I think out of the 114-120 citizens we have like only 2 of them arent a member of the cities guilds.)

To be clear I speak in deliberate generality about my city here because I do not want its name called out during a election, opening it up to tampering from the outside (and you all know it can happen). (if it was up to me, id insturct the militia to deny all requests for zoning rights during the week of the election, especially on the last day)

Actually, I don't know and could care less about theinternal politics of other cities. The only city that concerns me is the one that I'm mayor of. I was only asking in regards to if you do win, I like to work with other active mayors on events and helping out with questions concerning skills, duties, etc.

**Edit - I figured it out lol. Very interesting It would be nice to see some more activity out there. Good luck.

I understand :-)

Elections are a delicate time in a large player city but I know the city, regardless of who is Mayor, would like to get in touch with our neighbor cities and work with them.

Im sure we would welcome dialouge with you and other Mayors.

Greetings to you Mayor of Tuskin'Bane,

Please be advised as a passer by of this thread, you should know that the election in question here is in City Mirage, Tantoonie. I hope this clears things up a bit, oh and buy the way the current election has 3 candidates, one of which you may know, that Fish'Head guy is currently in second place with 18 votes, the leading candidate has 23, oh and kinshi has 7.
