Thread: Conquest!

This is SUCH a common response I hear, and I don't understand it. How is this kind of political takeover by force of numbers anything like an FPS in ANY way?
FPS are twich based insta-respawn gorefests. Players only interract on the level that they are finding a larger challenge from a player intelligence than from any coded AI presently.
In this case that Aldroud has listed, they are interracting in large groups through non-violent means over weeks of time to take over a city via one game mechanic and call it their own because they were denied one by another game mechanic.
An FPS is NOTHING like a massively multiplayer persistant world. Combat is skill based and sequention special move based. That, and it's TOTALLY AND UTTERLY CONSENTUAL! I don't get the correlation. Perhaps you could elaborate?
Might I suggest to the small city. Get another city hall deed made, find a new location and destory your old city while simultaneously building the new one.
Or remove one of your citizens from the borders of your city and don't expand to Tier 2. Wait them out.
While I understand YOUR guilds guidelines for destruction, violence, as an RP manner, and you have a right to pursue those means. I don't agree with them.Others should not have to play by those guidelines unless they want to (that is the definition of griefing in RPGs).
That is while I'm providing these suggestion.
if by consentual you mean you log in for the sole purpose of shooting something... well then I guess you're right... FPS's are in fact totally consentual...
fighting here isn't always consentual... sometimes you are forced to take actions which will open you to the world of fighting... In this game that is totally retarded...
What's the point of making a combat character so powerfull that any, almost any, other non combat first character has no possibility of even scratching the aggressor before in fact perishing himself... and them making those two fight or even put the weaker of the two in a position where he can be attacked?
consentual you say?

but at the same time I was taking a moral stand and letting him know his actions where WRONG...
furthermore, Alexander was in fact great... He conquered everything in his path... almost. But at the same time it had true drawbacks and major consequences...
I was merely suggesting he try diplomacy first.. since he did take the time to announce to everyone here, in a feeble attempt at attention, what his intensions would be.
I totally see your point on alexander. There were true drawbacks. Just like there are for the emperor. Palpatine is consumed by hatred and a lust for power. These figures, like the ring wraiths in LOTR, are totally common in fantasy and sci-fi and they add such incredible flavor to the stories!
I really feel like aldroud's posts are in character. So, tagging them morally wrong "out of game" just doesn't fit. Is there really a separation between what your character does and what you do? I know from D&D experience that there is a great divide between player and player character. That you should be able to switch character sheets with the person sitting next to you (in the real world) and the personality of the character in the game should not change!
Now, that being said, if you had a character on his server and were posting as that character, then applying moral judgements to his actions would be right on! And I'd be there joinin your call... because that's the kind of character I play.
In many cases though, in an MMO, people aren't really playing a role. They're basically projecting their real world selves into the virtual world. It happens all the time. But with a large group of veteran roleplayers, like he claims he's part of, I can't imagine that this group as a whole is acting as a projection of their real world selves onto an in game group.
In my opinion, people that want consentual interractions in all aspects of the game are just as bad as those player killers who want to make this counterstrike-wars-galaxies. If someone wants to build up a city with absolute tyranical control over it's inhabitants, there's a whole series of games exactly for you! SimCity! Weeee!
If someone wants to vie for power and make maneuvers with large groups of people to take political control by force of numbers, then we've got SWG for that! bless the developers!
Granted, there are bugs in the system, but I don't think that what this guy is doing counts as one of the bugs! I think it's a vital part of the game landscape!
You've just got to have killers, explorers, socializers, and goal oriented folk all in the same world with checks and balances throughout. Without that, its' not a virtual world. It's just a glorified chat room.
Aldroud: Now that is the Empire way to do it. Keep up the good work. And long live the Emperor!
This game is intended for all kind of players and style, would I like it if 50 rebels surrounded my future city and took it over? Definently not, but its kind of like chess.. a move and a countermove.. If you like a "evry-one-is-sweet-and-nice-evrytime" kind of game maby you should try Final Fantasy onlineor some game like that.. This game and this story has Good(Empire) and Bad/Evil(Rebels) elements in them..
I am SURROUNDED by rebel scum! ![]()
More hides for the spice mines though! Seriously, I'm at a complete and total loss as to why folks are calling this griefing. I'm a huge Ultimate Online player, play almost every day that I'm not playing SWG. Our clans are huge in that world too. We play in the PvP consent world, but are not player killers. Let me rephrase that, we are not griefer player killers, the ones that fight just to ruin some one else's good time. The folks that will crash a wedding party with tamed dragons and release them. I abhore and fight that kind of playstyle with everything I have.
Taking over a CITY IN STARWARS, however, is something brand new. It's not tearing down the walls of an upstart city in Shadowbane. It's not raising an army and marching to war (although we did offer to war the folks who placed the city hall-they turned us down).
I mean, good Lord people! It's a MASSIVE MULTI-PLAYER ONLINE ROLE PLAYING GAME. Get that? Multi-Player? We dont all have to sit down and come up with a solution to every problem that makes everyone happy. If I wanted that, I'd play Tellitubbies Online. How about some conflict? How about winners and losers? I'm not out to GRIEF anyone (by Grief I mean intentionally cause another player undue emotional distress). I'm using the game mechanics as they were established to be used: have N+1 number voters=win the election.
How do I justifiy this? How about the 60 members of my PA that worked blood and tears in an attempt to build our city, just to see it fail? We can be considered losers in that context. So we back off and nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure ![]()
Those of you that want to live in a completely conflict free MMORPG, may I suggest you try internet chat rooms? Else, be prepared to be consigned to the spice mines if you get in our way or fall afoul of the most benevolent Empiror!
/cityBan only keeps people from using city ammenities, they can always get to the voting terminal in City Hall. (At least as I understand it.)

You can actually ban players or citizens from the city hall and from voting? Wow.
Watching the news today, I'm struck by the similarity of what we're trying to do with what has happend in California. Ahnold moved his houses into position and challenged the gov'nor and won. Now he gets to be 'da boss'.
Funny, how games immitate life.
Hope our run of luck is as good as the Republicans.
This is a quick thought for any incumbent mayor who is facing a hostile take over. find out who owns the buildings around your city and cityban them. if you cant find out who the owner is now wait tell their houses become part of the city and then immedaitly when the server comes back up check the e-mail and city ban all the owners of thoes houses (before they have a chance to redeclair residence and become citizens, if they do this you wont be able to ban them). Then after that get some good fighters and form a milita and blow the **edit** out of them if they ever come near your city again.
