Thread: Idea: Politicians becoming the leader of Planets
By having a leader of the planet we could also incorporate the guilds to a higher degree. Hiring guilds to perfrom certain tasks could be done. The Planetary leaders could hire guilds to get local resources, for instance, which the planet could trade to other planets for their local resources. This would allow the crafters an opportunity to stay on their own planet and just buy the resources from their home-planets vendors.
I truly believe this would bring our universe of SWG closer to what the movies are portrayed as. Even though I enjoy playing my characters, i do quite often feel a bit bored with the universe as a whole. The only thing i can do with my fighting class characters to liven up my gameplay is PvP. As fun as it can be, it would be nice to know I was killing someone for a cause, not just for the sake of killing. If i were defending my planet's harvesters, for instance, i would feel much more gratification in killing the attackers than if I were just PvPing.
Also, withing this leadership of the planets, there could be a hierarchy of generals and such as well. Again, this would bring out some true reflection of what the SWG universe is like. The current rank systems via the recruiters really means nothing when a private is addressing a Colonel and not even saluting him (or even knowing he is a Colonel).
Please add your input.
This WOULD be very Star Wars, as the Emperor did just exactly this at the beginning of Ep. 4. However, I think this could be a griefing nightmare. Let's see how these things go for now, and bring it up once cities are up and running.
And incidentally, anyone who doesn't believe politics in and of itself is PvP is living in a dream world. This is one definite arena where you are going to have to fight others and fight hard to hold on to what you have. Isn't that what makes you appreciate what you have all the more? I mean, where's the fun in being the mayor if you never have to run for office, because you know you'll win every time?
We're doing a voluntary version of this on Scylla right now . . . more of a UN thing, but its a gathering of PA's and cities for a consensus on general conduct in our respective territories. There's no making rules for other groups involved though.

That sounds very cool, BlindTyldak/Shabhaii!!
I hope it all goes well for you as that would be a wonderful testing ground as to how something like this could possibly turn out. Perhaps you can keep this thread updated with the going-ons of the 'senate' on Scylla.
Would you be able to post some of the goals, mission statements, rules of conduct, etc ??
Well, I can probably go one step further . . . out first meeting is tomorrow (today?) Thursday of about 8 PA's and cities to set down the groundwork and see how we want to go further form there. I was going to post the discussion log on the Scylla boards but I can post it here as well if you like, so you can see how one group worked through the process . . . .

Very true, OnliWahnaKanoli. I do understand that many people, a vast majority I'm sure, wouldn't even get themselves involved in such matters. Which is the equivalent of modern day politics. While the politicians in the SWG Universe, now, have the power to rule over a city...there isn't a whole lot that they can do to influence the course of the galactic civil war that is raging in and around these planets that we inhabit. As the case may be in most(if not all) 'galaxies' right now, using the /gcw will prove fruitless as no faction has been swaying the war.
Now, I feel that if one day in your galaxy that you recieved a letter indicating that the Imperials had taken control of a neutral or rebel planet, then you, as a rebel(i'm just hypothesizing) would feel driven to reclaim that planet.
The only bit of 'swaying' that went on was with the first story arc. In my server, the rebels won and thus got some benefits for that. Of course, the rebels outnumber the imperials by a ridiculous amount. Other than that, in the handful of months that this game has been live, nothing else has happened in this GCW.
A shame it is indeed.
So, let's bring out those evil politicians and really turn the heat up on the GCW!!!!
Those who build a city and don't want anyone else to have it are discussing politics. Those who are discussing the potential benefits of having planetary leaders are discussing politics. Politics is a natural part of humans interacting in any context.
That said, I agree giving some depth (or height as you might see it) to the Politician role could add an incredible level of intrigue and excitement to the game. The fact that much of the SW Uni was influenced by politics rather than force, means that such a thing would actually enhance the Star Wars feel, albeit with the possibility of making it very frustrating if I am on the losing side.
However, there is another aspect that SOE has to account for. Not everyone plays this game with this kind of ambition. Many players just play for fun to get away from the pressures of RL and have no desire to immerse themselves into a virtual world of political battles and frustrations. This itself, is a political issue that SOE has to negotiate and balance before it can go forward with it.
Heh, maybe it will but I doubt it.
I currently think that being a mayor now is nothing more than a side duty rather than a full time career. I mean, initially, the mayor will have lots to do getting everything setup and placing structures and whatnot. But, over some time, I think it will be not much else... I say this because, from my understanding, Politicians only get politician xp by being voted into office, which happens only once a week. So, it will most likely be a slow but ongoing 'hobby' profession for awhile. Also, with people changing from one politician to the next during elections, this will make it harder for the politicians who didn't win to get xp(I'm sure they'll recieve some xp for the votes they recieved).
Anyone else have some thoughts??
