Thread: Idea: Politicians becoming the leader of Planets
Although politicians have yet to hit live, i think it would be very cool if there were some sort of elected leader of a planet.
I think it could be a layered system. Mayor being the lowest 'rank' of politicians. After gaining some xp as a mayor, one would become for a district leader(perhaps a group of 3 neighbouring cities) and then, after gaining more xp as a district leader(perhaps measured by 'terms of office held') the politician would be able to run for leader of the planet.
I think this would add a great deal of fun for everyone, not just the politicians. The politicians of these planets could declare their planet as being sympathetic to the rebellion, a henchman for the emperor, or a unswerving fence-sitter. This would allow the politician to hire/recruit militia, form an army. Planetary battles could ensue(perhaps on a battlefield). Planets could make treaties, form trade alliances, hire out their armies as mercenary forces(if neutral), announce a capital city, manage its finances, etc etc.
In order for a planet to declare itself rebel or imperial, it must have a certain % of reb/imp cities to qualify. Or, all the cities mayors could cast their votes, representing their citizens, as to which faction to support.
Given the fact that many Player Cities already know whom their mayor will be, this will take those elected mayors out of the race eventually and give them something else to do. I mean, after someone has won the election, say, 4 weeks in a row, this will deter other political opponents to running for office as the current mayor has a great deal of clout with the citizens of that city.
Trade between these planets will be easily handled by players as soon as the space expansion is released.
Any thoughts, positive or negative, are welcome.
But what if they want to pick up all the banks and cloning terminals and become Hitler toons !!!!!
I mean they could seriously shift the economic value of any city !!!!
If you put a lower tax and biased faction rules on every city then that could seriously destroy some planets !!!!
SO NO....
Don't even think about this again it hurts my brain with all the greifing that could be possible !!!!
No way . . . sorry, I'm not putting all kinds of work into a city and then having some schmuck I never heard of get elected leader of the planet and start making rules for us. ![]()

well, i'm not sure about electing a planetary governor (although it sounds pretty cool), i'd like to see planetary & galactic senates implemented in the future. how cool would it be for the mayors and other elected senators to be able to vote on giving planetary bonuses, similar to the city bonuses available? they could even vote on a faction alignment for each planet (say, 2/3rds majority?), and maybe even set up a planetary police force, and designate certain bad behaving folk as criminals who are to be shot on sight. "i have the deathmark on 12 systems...."
oh, we can only hope and dream ![]()

The city should never be considered 'yours' in the first place. that's what mayors do is make changes to the current needs of the citizens.
Also, the leader of the planet could be you, after all.
My idea of the politician becoming the leader of the planet is there so the politicians don't get stuck being mayor when, perhaps, they (as all politicians do) yearn to lead something more ...something larger than a few city blocks. Also, it's there so people of a certain town don't get stuck with the same leader over and over. I know, you can vote him out but with the low level politicians only being able to place certain objects, i think people will shy away from voting a mayor out for quite awhile(so their city can get the bigger, better buildings). So, giving these politicians the chance to 'move up' in their profession will alleviate that problem.
That's up to the city though . . . we DO consider our town to be "ours". We're putting the work and the cash into it, we should make the rules, not someone else (can you tell I'm a strong supporter of the option to completely privatize a player city?
). And I would never become a planetary govenor myself because I don't think anyone would find it very fun to see rules enacted that superceded the desires of the town's citizens.

This is a great idea...naysayers be darned. It moves the game forward...yea you might get a jerk, yea your imp guild city on corelia might be toasted by the rebel majority...good. As for griefing, well if it goes by votes or the planetary leader is elected via some sort of planetary senate, really lowers the possibility of that type of person being put or staying in office.
Lets be honest...the SWG we have is a pale and flacid shadow of the free pvp, city building and destroying WAR we were promised. It has degenerated into Dant mission running and Kryat dragon runs. Personaly, i would like the game to move more towards the strategic political/empire battles that the early days of Shadowbane had...and less of this Eq with blasters no consequence, no impact starwars pop-up-book we have now. In fact, with fleets and vehicles, i would like the possibility of the empire or the rebellion to take entire planets...the thrill of that sort of threat would get the sorts of people who whine about anything that might imperil there pathalogical need to NOT interact, or be involved in the GCW in the game.
Of xource, this would need to be carefully done...PVP needs to be fixed etc etc first...but still, dont poo-poo something that might yet save this game...I have never seen turnover in my guild like im seeing in swg =(
LOL, I don't know what boards YOU were on pre-release, but you weren't reading the same ones I was if you ever thought this game was about free PvP and razing cities . . . .

I agree Seneardon. I always found it funny for Rebellion controlled heavy mines to be set side-by-side with Imperial controlled mines. This is where the Galactic Civil War should step in and allow some sort of sabotage to take place. Perhaps an increase in the harvesters maintenance or something like that would make it harder for an Imperial harvester, for instance, to be placed on a Rebel controlled piece of land(be it a city, planet, whatever).
There needs to be more separation between Rebels and Imperials in order for the GCW to really makes itself felt in this game. Allowing districts(large plots of land), cities, planets to pledge their allegiance to a certain faction will help flush out the GCW from its current hiding place.
If a planet was controlled by the Rebels and it was the only planet that spawned dolovite iron, for instance, the doctors of the Imperials would sorely need that iron to make their advanced stimpacks. this is where the Imperial planets could muster together an army and invade the Rebel controlled planet where the dolovite iron is at the moment.
I'm not sure what sounds more fun to you. Going to Dantooine to search for a holocron or enlisting in the Imperial army(a real one) with the mission to take over a planet.
That is just one scenario that could happen. There are countless others that could be created if the politicians were able to advance beyond Mayor.
This would mean some loss, and yess some griefiing...but if they coulod seperate the factions, then give them the tools to try and destroy each other, it would be something to do other then decorate your house and smack talk at the local cantina. Planets will move back and forth as controll shifts...someday fleets will clash and grand armies will fight for factional control of the galaxy...surely even you phat loot let me decorate my bedroom in peace crowd can see how that adds something to the game that is missing...whats that word...oh yea a point, a goal, and something fun. The whole jedi thing will only keep the rabel ammused for so long hehe.
