Thread: If we cannot have CITYWARN, then please give us Mayors JAILs instead!
Greetings all, and Happy New Year!
I don't know about the rest of your mayors, but I'm finding keeping the streets of Darkfire Metropolis safe difficult after the removal of /citywarn and it seems that the devs are in no hurry to put it back despite the huge petition and unusual level of consensus amongst politicians.
So, rather than continuingto flog a horse that is long since dead, I've been thinking of a new approach - let me know what you think.
Each citywith CITY rank or aboveshould have a JAIL facility, where people who refuse to respond to a WARNING, can be automatically detained for3 HOURs.
Someone who has been jailed can be released in two ways:
1. They convince the mayor or a member of the militia to pardon them (highly unlikely to work!).
2. They post the bail set by that city for prisoners (e.g. 250,000 credits which can be paid by anyone including a Bounty Hunter who may be after them - additional income for the city here too).
3. Jedis should have the ability to use their powers to escape, but risk revealing themselves in the process.
Why do I think this is a good solution?
a. It does not force anyone to engage in PVP, which I understand is the primary reason for the Devs wanting to take /citywarn out.
b. It still allows cities to keep their street free of people who might have a negative impact on life in that city.
c. It should be a sufficiently strong deterrent to prevent those people come back into the city.
d. It could be used to help other aspects of the game by making fugitives and Jedis have to think VERY carefully about their movement.
e. It should be enough of a compromise to keep Mayors and their citizens happy.
Here is an example of the sort of problem this will help us to address:
A large group of Imperials (over 20) come into our neutral town and start threatening the citizens and telling them to reveal whether or not they were covert rebels. They interrupted a city meeting taking place in the Cantina, and generally started hassling people.
With the JAIL function, they could have all been given 2 minutes to leave town, or be automatically transported to the jail where they would have to sit for several hours or pay a large fine.
This would actually be much more effective than /citywarn as, at the time, only two members of our militia were in the city at the time.
I'd appreciate the thoughts of you other mayors out there - let me have them and let's see if we cannot get something in place to allow us to protect our cities.
I look forward to seeing you comments!
Yours,
/bump
Excellent idea - we should have this right away. Good thinking. Can the Devs object to this?

Rebels are a disease, and The Empire is the only Solution
This would never be implemented because it could be abused even more than /citywarn.
But I do agree that we need some way to protect our assets and not allow jokers to run amok in our cities.
you are kidding right?
Giving players the right to jail other players? ROFL. Oh come on, this idea is crazy best.
It would be the biggest griefing tool in any MMORPG and thankfully one the Devs would just laugh at.
If you are going to speak against an idea, Kilesha, perhaps you would get farther if you supported your opinion! I think this sounds like an excellent idea. No one, of ANY faction, should be able to just walk into another's city and disrupt the residents lives without recourse for the residents, which is what we have right now. I would make just three suggestions.
One. Reduce the jail time. Think about how long even 90 SECONDS of incap time feels! I think that something between 15 and 30 min would be very sufficient to make someone thing twice about harrassing citizens in their own cities.
Two. Allow the mayor the autonomy to set the fine with a cap in place. I realize most will set it to the max, but this is basically a tax for would be intruders and as such should be left in the hands of the mayor to decide just how much his or her city needs to earn for the inconvenience of jailing these criminals.
Three. When a person is released, either having paid the fine or served the term, he or she should be tranported to the outskirts of the city limits. This would prevent this from becoming the "biggest griefing tool" and confine it to the purpose it was intended.
Whether this idea is adopted or another implemented, I DO hope we get some control of our cities back soon.

You still havent thought up of an idea to stop people form using this tool to grief players who happen to be in their city to look around.

I'm sorry, we have been through the exact same arguments over and over when we where discussing the removal of /cityban. You can only beat a dead horse for so long. The devs stopped us from TEFing other players, they sure arent now going to allow us to jail them.
Dont get me wrong, we do need better tools for controlling our towns. I am in a Imperial based town, close to Mos Eisley, we get attacked and griefed nightly. I know all about how disruptive some types of players can be, but it goes BOTH ways.
This will never work and the devs won't support it. It's the same reason why they do not allow slavery in the game; they will not implement a tool that allows you to exact control over another person's avatar by restricting their movements or activities in a non-consentual PvP way. This one especially would not only control the avatar, but take their credits as well. There's no stopping anyone from making an outrageus "fee" for anyone entering their town.

"The reason I don't PvP in this game is because no matter what side I picked, I'd be guaranteed to be fighting alongside at least one idiot. And I don't defend idiots."
Imagine:
I want to go to the Krayt Graveyard.
The City of Wepwnuzers is covering that area.
They jail all who attempt to hunt krayts.
Grief.
I am opposed to this, just because they wouldn't control where cities could be placed in any reasonable manner.

I could have used a tool like this one a few times already ....

I rather like the sound of this idea from a roleplay perspective actually. I agree with Rilleao that the jail time would have to be significantly less than an hour because that really is too much of an imposition on another person't game time. I think 15 minutes and the financial penalty (managed by mayor) is more than enough. Even if neither of these were implemented... just having it as a player structure would be a great thing for us rp cities.
I think that regardless of what the devs do... those who want to grief will continue to find ways to do so. Perhaps rather than spending so much effort combatting them should focus on those that actually play the game for their own enjoyment and that of those they hang with?
