Well, it's a mixed blessing. I predict all sorts of political chaos, as everyone and their mom tries to be a mayor.
They should have reduced them, but not elminated it, I think.

Be nice to have those sp back but now as mayors we are going have to be extremely careful of who we recruit now. With no skillpoints anyone can run for mayor which means it opens the flood gates to alot of possible griefing. If the Devs only implemented a safeguard from preventing city halls and civic structures from being destroyed as a form of griefing, then I would embrace this change. I worked hard in recruiting, raising funds, getting people involved and redecorating the city hall with rare items. If all of this can be destroyed on a whim of someone getting their kicks from griefing others, then this no longer becomes a game for enjoyment.

Additionally, how many people will willingly elect a novice politician over a master politician?
This also opens up the possibility of actually seeing campaigns instead of "don't forget to vote for the incumbant again this term."
What do you deem "compaigning"? It's not like mayors have alot of power anyways. Any candidate can say "Vote for me and you'll have no taxes."
And as far as a novice vs a master. Guild X gets invited into a city to fatten the citizen count. Then Guild X puts a novice up who gets elected because the guild is stronger than the other citizens. Now you've just lost the city to someone else.
As long as skill points are required for politician, it'll keep possible griefers out.
