What kind of benefits would you like to see in the master box of Politician?

The Politician profession has been without master benefits for quite some time. The latest Astromech Stats show that while there are a good number of Politicians, there are very few masters. While a good part of this is probably due to the fact that many people picked up Novice Politician when the skill point requirement was removed, the fact remains that there is currently no reason to take the master box even though it doesn't require any skill points.

Suggestions that have been made in the past include unique specializations, decorations, civic structures and Player Event Perk discounts. There have been many other good ideas made--and I'm sure some that haven't--so let's share them!

It's been a busy week for new announcements to SWG, one of the biggest happening today with the announcement of the new expansion to be released November 1st: Trials of Obi-Wan. Group xp has been changed, changed back, and up for evaluation on Test Center. New Astromech Stats were released about most and least played professions today as well. You can read up on all the changes in the links below.

I did get some more information on our mission terminal discrepancy issues, which I posted over in the stickied thread. Basically it has now been confirmed that it is *not* working as intended, but the actual fix isn't easy because it involves many different factors. It is being worked on as they are looking into and evaluating the various things that go into mission generation. We've been asked to continue adding and updating that thread as a point of reference as they go through the system, so I'll be keeping it stickied for new entries to be added. It sounds like it's proving to be fairly useful.

This week's featured links:

  • Friday Feature, Part 1: The Trials of Obi-Wan -- Information on and discussion thread for the newly announced "The Trials of Obi-Wan" expansion due for release on November 1st.

  • Friday Feature, Part 2: Astromech Stats -- The initial post has a link to the professions listed from least played to most. Further on in the thread Garva found the information as it related to profession masters rather than just those with skill boxes in the respective professions. Politician is in the top 10 when it comes to overall boxes, but at the bottom for mastered.

  • Group Experience Changes -- Tiggs's post and related discussion about the reversion of the group experience system.

  • Garva's Home Show, 8.19.2005 -- An awesomely decorated City Hall wins again!

  • Role-Playing Cities by Galaxy -- For those Player Cities that encourage role-playing, post here to have your city added to the list.

  • Round Table Discussion Archive -- Looking for a past discussion? You can find them all archived here for easy reference. Feel free to continue the discussions!

The master should be able to place faction recruiters as well as a bazaar terminal.

Then you have got 2 skills really worth having and able to make your player city come "alive"

The ability to level terrain (even terrain that has structures already placed on them). Spy net operatives. Recruiters.

To be able to adjust Terrain, by ones self or by calling in some npc workers (for a fee).

To be able to allow other people admin to the city hall.

To be able to rename items like lamp posts and statues.

To be able to give area's within your city limits names.

To be able to flag "no building" area's within a city, to stop griefing from players that the DEV's will do nothing about.

To flag buildings that belong to players that have not logged in for say 3 months, to be rolled up into the "said" players inventory or bank.

To be able to give titles other than militia to citizens, that only other citizens can see without having to go to the city term, dept mayor, militia leader, council member etc etc.

Faction recruiters (though I don't understand why) are considered exploitable.

Terrain modification would cause so much lag no one would ever come to your city, but it's not going to happen.

Bazaars are only for NPC cities, and before anybody mentions it so are starports.

How about:

Reduction in city maintainence costs.

Title:Mayor (if you are one)

Diplomatic immunity from searches.

ADK that works on a vehicle (just because I -want- one!)

Ability to change name on city hall.

Special clothing item like the ace pilot reward.

Reduction in event perk costs

1. Have the artisan do that when they make the item

2. Like a 3X3 footprint with no graphic, just a place holder. And zero lot cost. Should be easy and a good idea.

3. Or even just to be able to display the title "militia", at the players option.

Also it would be nice to be able to:

-send a system message inside of the city borders, like squadleader can do

-set an enter and an exit message for the city

-set decorations like those eventperks offer for permanent use in the city, maybe some watchtowers, like those seen at bases would be nice.

also I would like to see that Politicans finaly get some authority over their city, as well as many otherthings, that might belong to another discussion.

Whats this argument about terrain fixing causing lag... do you know this for a fact? Do you get lag when approaching Imp or reb bases.... cause they flatten out the terrain all around them ya know. Point is IF they did it they could do it in a way that could cause less lag. Lag should not be the reason to throw a great idea out. BTW this issue is important to me because my metro is on Rori and its ridiculously hard to deal with the unflat terrain and little pools of water everywhere.

Cannot see how flat land would cause lag. Surely having to re-draw hills and tress etc would cause it?

Changing the names on items would be nice, so that a architect could just do a factory run of items, and not have to waste time crafting them by hand. I have items in my city which I post messages on, as there is no ingame method of doing so. Would also save money in doing this.

I would like to see some things only craftable by mayors. Like city directional signs to guide visitors, or the ability to place cantinas or hospitals and have them run off city funds as well. Recruiters, spy net operatives, factional patrol spawns.... make the city a city.

I'm sure I'm not the first person to post these ideas, but I'd like to speak my mind.

In my view and opinion, the idea of Player Cities, and the mayoral races is fantastic. It really lets people get a real sense of accomplishment. Many people in my city aren't crafters, but with a player city they still feel like they can contribute. For instance, one person has 'donated' to the city a few statues for city hall, and a handful of streetlamps.

I'd also like to say I love how the system for Political XP works. All based on votes, if you can't get your friends to help you - than you're not very good at politics. Its not like you can buy up materials and grind votes - it takes some skill to be a good politician.

Now, for the ideas I've been having. Most of these ideas are designed to make those who are citizens of the city, have the option to become more involved with city events.

Player City Starports. I know they've been suggested, many times, before. I doubt these will ever happen, because of all the things that would need to be updated (landing texts at space stations, etc) but.... I suggest that a Player City Starport could be placed, by a Master Politician, in a Metropolis. The building its self would need to be crafted by a Master Architect, and I suggest it use many parts (Heck, even some Master Shipwright, and Master Artisan subcomponents, and heck why not Asteroid Materials?). Heck, it could be a one-time-use schematic drop from some rare (and odd!) quest. This would be a huge and wonderful reward for a community. If we wanted to make it interesting, have it be put down by either Master Shipwrights, or Master Pilots.

Militia Building: I was thinking that there could be a Militia HQ building. The purpose of this building could be something as simple as a building mostly empty, and could be decorated by those in the Militia. Make it so its locked and blocked to all non-militia members. There could be a terminal there that displays some data- city size/population. Those who are banned from the city and the like. These could also have a small place to repair weapons/armor, and have storage lockers for uniforms (see below). If I had to choose a building model, I'd use the 'tower' that is seen on many smaller outposts (like the Rebel Outpost on Rori, or on Kashyyyk/Kochiro)

- On a semi-related note, I'd also like to suggest something like a Militia Uniform. These could be special item made by the Mayor of the city. Its handed over to a tailor, and assembled like any other item, except it cannot be made into anything but the factory schematic. It's put through its run, and the militia members have special uniforms. They could be something simple like 'one size fits all species' cover-alls (kind of like those Ithorian Technical suits, one piece costumes - but made for all species). This lets those who are dedicated to being in the militia strut their stuff, so to speak.

I love the idea of the Hotels/Hospitals/Cantinas being put down by masters of their profession - this adds a dynamic to the town and helps insure diversity. Perhaps there could be buildings for each of the master Basic classes. Such as, the npc city "Guild Hall" Buildings (for skill trainers and the like) from Master Artisans. We -could- allow for the 'specialty' terminals to only be set down by Masters of the appropriate profession. Heck, that would help make the community feel more involved with the city altogether.

I had been reading a lot about the BH mission terminals and SpyNet operatives.... Well, I could see why these could easily be implemented, we have public terminals already and the ability to set down NPC's. But if we're to do this, I heavily suggest that these things be set down by a Master BH. This makes sure that they will be put to good use, and so the BH does feel like he or she can contribute. The SpyNet operative should not be able to be better than the lowest rank of SpyNet operative.... plus, there should be a minimum distance between the two (500m?).

Planet Flags: Other NPC Cities have these flags set out from time to time, usually on guild halls. I would love to be able to place down nice planet flags for my buildings. We could easily make some rule where the flags are to be displayed inside buildings (so they cannot be used as walls) - or something like that. But still, it does allow for us as a community to glow with pride. I say these should be able to be crafted by any decent artisan and the product is than handed over to the mayor, who can than set it in/on/near any civic structure. Those metal flag stands could be optional, maybe.

The last idea I'd like to propose is "City Events." On the ballot terminal, citizens could put in a vote for one or two (or maybe more) 'city events' that the Mayor could select from their city. The idea behind this is, the citizens could come togeather for large things like, Oktoberfest / 'Taste of Chicago', or their could be something like "Have a Large Fireworks Display" - great for when your city improves a rank. A 24 hour firework festival, or something. Once a week, the mayor could have the option to run a ballot or simply choose the event. When selected, the Mayor picks a day/time to have it begin.
There could be waypoint-chaser missions for a "scavenger hunt" (waypoints/clues preset by the Mayor when done)
Oktoberfest could have several tents appear around the edge of the city, and have some NPC's there to vendor out free food.
Or, there could even be things like Fundraisers. Crafters can come to a special tent to sell items, and some percent of their sales made here go to the city treasury!
There are more ideas, but here are some that stick out the most right now.

There is a small handful of ideas that I have:

Militia Building: I was thinking that there could be a Militia HQ building. The purpose of this building could be something as simple as a building mostly empty, and could be decorated by those in the Militia. Make it so its locked and blocked to all non-militia members. There could be a terminal there that displays some data- city size/population, those who are banned from the city and the like. These could also have a small place to repair weapons/armor, and have storage lockers for uniforms (see below). If I had to choose a building model, I'd use the 'tower' that is seen on many smaller outposts (like the Rebel Outpost on Rori, or on Kashyyyk/Kochiro). I can imagine every one of these militia towers (for Imp cities) having a set of wanted posters in them.

- On a semi-related note, I'd also like to suggest something like a Militia Uniform. These could be special limited use item made by the Mayor of the city (liked looted schematics).

Those metal flag stands could be optional, maybe.

Area Names: When you 'search' for a player, often it will say what region they are in (ex: Mudflat East or Mos Eisley). I'd love to see the Masters box be able to have the ability to have it so when people search, it will show up that they are in the City. I know its not exactly earth-shaking useful, but it does add to the feel of the game. It makes your city feel more like an NPC City in the aspect that it feels like it has been there for a good long time. Right now, when my citizens are in the city it simply said "on Rori."

Bazaar: I've heard a lot of requests for these, and I can see why. The Dev's have set down that Bazaars are for NPC cities only - so if they say no to my idea, no hard feelings. But, I'd love to see one in my city. The bazaar its self would need to be crafted by a Master Architect, and I suggest it use many parts (even some Master 'other professions' subcomponents, and why not Asteroid Materials?). It could be a one-time-use schematic drop from some rare (and odd!) quest.

Recruiters: These could be as simple as adding them to the 'purchase with faction points' for those in various factions. To allow it to be placed in the city, I would think the city has to be sufficiently large, have a militia of X many people large, already have a faction mission terminal, have the city declared to be on the 'appropriate' side in the GCW and get some kind of 'special zoning right' from the Master Politician Mayor. I have no problem with tasks for good things being difficult, especially of its something as wonderfuly useful and desirable as a recruiter (or a Bazaar terminal).

Sighryn has mentioned a " Special clothing item like the ace pilot reward. " I think this would be wodnerful, and hilarious if this clothing item is a steriotypical "mayoral Sash." Reference many many cartoons for this one. Also, to complete the effect a mayoral top-hat (and optional monicle)

Nibo mentioned the idea of an "Enterance / Exit System Message" and I am wholly in agreeance with this. I'm sure this would have to be a short message. "You have entered Rancliff - Please enjoy your stay" or "You have entered Freeberg- Imperial Troops need not apply for citizenship" or something along those lines. I can see how this could be abused, but anything that would be inapropriate could easily be sent to the devs for review. Make these short and sweet.

I would like to see something fixed, that I think was a great idea when it was introduced, but has never worked correctly from the day it was implemented.

How about fixing the ballot terminals?

I have used my political prowess to get people into the city for weekly lottery droids, so I'm sure I could get them to come in to vote on ideas i have for the city through these ballot terminals.
