Thread: A Time for a True Future Plan for Cities...
Right now, we are having a lot of problem finding incentives for anyone to live 'in' the city. And even if they do, declare residence, unless we stand at their door and guilt them. (j/k)
Our city was once about as busy as Theed, surprising to even us. We had entertainers, doctors, full services, things we could offer citizens (like free buffs, etc).
In the Post CU world, they wanted these items removed from the game; however, they have left very little city incentives.
Our city is now only surviving by crafters, guild members, and we get a few travelers to support the economy, but we are on the edge of surviving.
We also have noticed that surrounding our city, approximately 50 houses have gone up recently. So they get the benefits of living right next to a metropolis, but don't contribute, even in citizenship.
We have no taxes, city council supported city, and we still have problems getting people to commit to moving in. As it gains them nothing...
How about giving a series of perks, or city structures that are citizen only accessible. Stuff we can offer to our citizens as a real benefit.
Even if it was a Starport terminal, that would be a start, and let us control that only citizens can use it (like the one at the emperor's retreat for example.) And if the cost of the Starport terminal is high, that would be fine, or restricted by making it Master Politician, doing Mayor diplomatic Quests, etc, that would be fine, just make it available.
We have built an outstanding city, but now are facing the 'why should we move here' mentality. Even trying to reinforce the city with a strong Guild is not enough.
Also another simple thing, City Chat Tab. - Not everyone in our city belongs to the same guild or faction, but would be nice to have a 'community' of the citizens.
These are SIMPLE additions that would start to help.
Game designers setup more meeting with Mayors from around the galaxy, even have a Politician retreat and in Game conference with us.
I have been the Mayor of our city since it started, and no we are not the oldest or biggest city in the galaxy, but we have been here for 1 1/2, same mayor, same name, same rules, and been almost too successful prior to the CU.
After the CU, we are even struggling, and I can't imagine a lot of the cities that are struggling to keep their starports and other issues that they shouldn't have to be facing.
Our city was started by myself and friends as a place to help new players and that anymore is not as needed as it used to be. But we still open our arms to new people and hep where we can as we have been around and have more resources to in game knowledge.
So Game Planners/Developers/Correspondents please take this seriously and meet with us. As I have posted before, there are a lot of things the CU has done to effect parts of the system and economy that are not always obvious, and we sometimes see thse effects. Also I am a developer myself, and am offering free advice when I'm not working for MSN/Microsoft to help make this game the best it can be.
I don't want to complain, I want to work with the game designers to define and find solutions. I don't care how the game was either, I want to find solutions that work in the new mechanics.
Please sign, and keep this request live.
I love your ideas.

QFE, we have so many just like this around our cities, Fayth and Riverfayth. My other problem is that as my city expanded it took now includes static harvestors that were placed, that now take up community space. What do mayors recommend for that?
I feel strongly that there is a need to make player cities a vital place for players to meet.
I belive we should be able to craft visually appealing cities with uniqueness that would attract residents. What I mean by this is by allowing us to craft cities as elegant as any static cities with a building diversity that would truely represent a city. This includes terrine modifications. A simply way to allow for building diversity is to allow for all player buildings to be constructed on all planets. When you place a structure the exterior defaults to the planet norm. So you could have a Tatooine guild hall placed on Naboo and the exterior look as elegant as any Naboo neo-classical building. This would be true of all buildings. Also, have "porch" lights at the doors and balconies. This would polish off the look of a player city. Also, you know how you can toggle different styles of signs on the front door of a house? Using the same princaple why not toggle different types of balcony furnature as well? That way you could entertain on your balconies. Terrine modifications is a mus must must.
City chat, like guild chat, should be an automatic feature.
Some way to create city "theme parks" and the badages that go along with it should be allowed. Imagine the creative story lines we could create. Currently, I am working on something simular using vendors. But it doesnt have the same sence of creativeness seeing the word "Vendor: a Palisades Noble". On the same though, why not have npc's generate and walk about a city like they do in static cities?
Other ways to award politican exp points other then challenging a mayor. For instance, you could have a ciy council that members could run for, and get exp points for this. The city council would be largely powerless, but it would be a stepping stone to mayor. They too would get exp points for when they run for office. Politican is the 10th most popular profession... but so many can not gain exp points for because of very popular incumbants that they themselves like. Additionally, change the name for militia to administrators, and when a mayor appoints them as an administratir they are also awarded politican exp points weekly.
I honestly dont see the devs taking any ideas here seriously. As a previous poster had commented they have basically undermined player cities and politicans. At this point, I wonder if simply allowing players to move into static cities would be more feasable. I think that is how they do it in final fantasy online mmorph. Have a section of a static city where players can live. If this were done then politicans can run for positions on a static city council, and a mayor.

Petitions are bad. /kthxbye
Considering the size of a rank 4 metropolis,a mayor will have the chance to 'recruit' minor faction NPCs for the city.Recruiting them will work similar to recruiting skil ltrainers. But I will have to pay for the weekly upkeep of these NPCs in advance and they will have their spawn throughout the week(which is 10-20 times instant respawn as soon as they die and 1 hour timer for the next respawn after this instant respawn has been expired).A rank 4 metropolis will be able to have up to 50 NPCs scattered around the city.To prevent in-city grinding of outsiders the respawn rate could be inreased after the instant respawn has been expired, thus eliminating the element of exploiting lol

Just create a chat channel for your city. It's not very hard.
The hard part is getting the chat channel to work. I personally have experienced many problems with private chat channels.
Also, it'soften difficult to get people to do city-related things. If it were automatic, the hassle of convincing people to join would be gone. (Of course, then you have the hassle of getting them to use it.
