Thread: Why are you a Politician?

I was very excited to start a city and actually had a good time for awhile. Now it is somewhat a chore, and the politician profession itself is in bad shape in my opinion. We really add no value to the system and spend a LOT of skill points. After you decorate a bit and get the specialization you want (if you choose to use them at all); you're done. There is no ongoing skill use. The militia can grant zoning rights. And we don't even have /citywarn (second biggest game screw up after giving away holos). We can't do budgets, evict people, or even add that much customization. I don't see to many things coming either, it seems the combat types have one this round of development time.

I'm at a loss as to why to remain a politician? I will probably be giving it up soon.

Let me know why YOU are a politician or flame away!

Cheers,

To have and keep a player city. If I loose to a new mayor and can't win again after a few weeks I"ll just drop it but as long as I"m the only name on the ballot...

Also I need to get things organized to make a good city in our amazing spot so if not me then who?

if i didn't do it noone else would. And really, I dont' trust anyone else to have as broad a vision as i have. I'm a big fan of RTS games, so building the city is kind of like a really really long RTS game.

You see, this is why I'm glad I registered whithin the first 2 or 3 days when the game came out instead of AFTER the politician patch so I don't get it in the holo.

I was interested at first. Then I realized how annoying it will be, and it's not something you can just drop like a structure with high maintenence unless you're a slimy worm that wants around 100 enemies spreading the word about how you stuck your tail between your legs and ran.

Hrm, at first it sounded fun... and then about 5 min later I realized my life is gonna suck for the next few months. Currently my city is up to level 2 (woot! after 3 months of work) and soon to go onto 3. We have 30 citizens and our entire militia is bugged (yay!). I am currently a 2-2-2-2 mayor and I hope to reach master before I shoot myself in the foot otherwise I will need another reason to find someone else to take my spot.

There is no joy in this profession, only those that got suckered into it are doing it.

As mentioned above, to have and keep a player city, to try out some extra game "content"and also as a proper "home" for our guild. Additionally, it wasa useful way toget rid ofsome of my bank balance.

Our mayor is a "communal" shared second guild account and he's logged on briefly every day to check mails etc - other than that the profession has little more to offer once we reach our next - and final - set of new "toys" - large and exotic gardens.

On a more positive note, I takegreat pride in looking out over 60+ homes, a shuttle, a bank, a hospital, merchant tents, a cloning centre, a PA hall and a city hall packed with statues named after the founding members, plus umpteen gardens, streetlights, trainers, terminals, statues andfountains - knowing I built or fundedevery last one and can afford tomaintain it as a landmark on our serverfor literally years to come - regardless of whether I'm still playing the game!

So yes, from that perspective I have no regrets

I became mayor because shortly before the city patch I was the most aktive to gather information from test server and the 2 "mayors" of the city before then left the game at that time ... I was the first to come online, train politician and then plant the city hall (first on Gorath, yipiee ) ...

Now that I had reelections recently nobody even competed agains me, nobody wants to spend the skillpoints / do the work, so I'm rather stuck with it. I do love to help our community, but it is quite sad that being politician and mayor is apparantly so little sought-after.

But as I have also attained the city cantina lots and those of the theater I've gotten a second account, so I don't mind that much anymore. It's even quite fun to play to different roles on the same server and interact with your own character (my too chars constanly call each other names )

Our city is comprised mostly of the guild I am in, a few other smallerguilds and some unguilded players. I am an officer in my guild and I volunteered so that our city would have an active mayor to keep up with the daily needs of a large city. We anticipated a 100 player or more city and we got it. But after our city reached metropolis and I placed a Dantooine meditation garden, there was nothing left to do.

My job as mayor now is change skill trainers on what seems like a daily basis based on who whines the most on guildchat. I plan to keep myself busy in the near future by remodelling the city.

Truth be told the position is what you make of it beyond the allotted skills. Being a Politician currently, and getting elected, consists ofa lot of one shot use skills without a lot of gameplay to them.

That having been said, it keeps me very, very busy (as it does with many other mayors). I personally do not indulge in swapping out skill trainers. We just keep a selection of the elite trainers not found in the closest static city in place, and depend on each other for training.

I serve largely as the hub for the community. I redirect one person to another looking for skill training, equipment, and folks for hunting parties. I handle a great deal of the intercity relationships. And gathering forces to repell Imperial attacks on our locations. And sharing resource waypoints among the citizens. Directing placement of structures. Coordinating an average of two events per week to keep things lively around the town, particularly on weekends (no sense in having a ghost town, right?). Recruiting citizens. Helping newbies.

I could do almost all of those things without the Politician skill. The fact I am the mayor just draws folks to me though. There is a great deal of juggling going on at any given time between my personal goals and those of the city.

So the bottom line is that the profession is currently what you make of it.

I'm glad to be seeing some honest replies. I share many of your sentiments. At first, it was very cool. We have a level 4 city, almost level 5. We're primarily a guild city. I hope that the devs read this or the corrrespondant points this to them. People generally like player cities, but want more content. However, most seem to think politician is useless. It seems that it is a popular profession for a "mule" character (I have heard that many times also) or as a second. Why can't they add things to make this a primary or useful profession? If it's not, why not just let anyone run for mayor and the mayor can do any of the current pol skills in accordance with city rank? This would free up skill points for more useful things and allow for more people to be Mayor. Why make it exclusive to the politician?

The statement about one shot skills is dead on. Where is the ongoing value of being Mayor other than to be the "one" for your city to be able to use the city hall terminal? And even worse, what's the use of politician if you aren't the mayor? Nadda. Why would they develop a whole profession that had no value? That's a lot of skill points just to get a master tag and not be able to contribute much.

There have been a few suggestions, but I'm at wits end as to what the benefit of politician is. How about giving speeches that heal (or cause!) mind damage or BF? Something, anything that would be of ONGOING value to the community. The SOE question about other professions is "why would you want x in your hunting group". The question for the support or crafting professions (which should include Politiican) should be "why do you need or would want to go to y".

At the very least, I'd like to hear that there is SOMETHING in the works, planetary government, ambassadors; new skills, new city content. ANYTHING.

The promise of being able to create a backdrop for player developed stories is what lead me to take on the role of Mayor and Politician. Let's hope the tools come to enable us to do that.
