This is weekfourof "This Week in Politics."

I'll make a new thread each Monday for use throughout the week for youto let me and the rest of the Politician community hear how things are going in your city, events planned, tips you might have learnedlike ways ofusing specializations efficiently, new facilities being placed, any interesting dynamics like mergers with new partners to grow your cities or issues of disagreement between your citizens, anything having to do with your politician skills, new skills, skills sold back, newissues, frustrating bugs, or just a quick status report. It will be easy for me to keep up with a digest version ofthe goings-on of the community this way, and perhaps a way for you all to get to know each other as players dedicated to the concept of building communities in the Star Wars universe.

This week, one of the issues which had my attention was the use of medium houses to build walls in cities. The building of a wall of houses may in some cases be attributable to the use of an exploit, but the use of medium houses withcertain footprint allows the building of a wall within the normal footprint placement of houses, and is, in my experience, a very common feature of many player cities.

In addition to your normal weekly reports of city activities, let us hear about your use or non-use of house-walls in your cities. Do you use them? Do you use them for defense of faction bases? Do you use them for some aesthetic purpose? Do you maintain a corridor for access to the center of walled off areas, orhave you completely walled in certain facilities or features?

I'd like to get as much of a clarification on the rules from the Devs as possible, and how house walls are used in your own cities may give me some examples on which to request clarification. If you have questions on how house walls may or may not be used as approved features of a city, please ask here.

Reporting from Last Hope, Starsider, Tattooine:

We've had an influx of citizens this week.. happilly, what could have turned into a tough situation was averted by diplomatic handling. The new "New Citizens' Handbook" was published by the Mayor's Office, and new arrivals have been praising it's usefulness -

We still await a status report on ground breaking on a new Shuttleport; we expect word soon from the Planetary Authority.

ooc: Tattooine houses aren't really able to be used as walls.. our basic residential structure is a "ring", but we cannot place homes that close together.. that, and the terrain doesn't allow for homes to be placed abut to each other, even if the house footprint would allow.

I'd like to have some "wall" structures to define borders.. but since we are a neutral Safehold, we're not really trying to keep anyone out.

Not too much to report here. The city continues to hang right around the 130 citizen mark, but we have seen less turnover overall as I think many people are starting to settle in for more for the long term. We officially elected 5 citizens to form a council and help me with the day-to-day duties of running the city, so I am excited to see some new energy be put into the city.

On the housing walls... I am a bit worried about how this would affect us. We are a completely neutral city and have no 'defenses' or anything of the sort. That being said though, the majority of our houses in the city are Medium Naboos, and they are often arranged next to eachother to form lanes. I have received countless compliments on how the city really feels like a city more so than anywhere else they have been - and I think a big part of that is the closeness of the Medium Naboos that give the city a great 'downtown' type feel. If they were to make a change forcing us to move, or redesign these Naboo Mediums... wow, it would be such a significant adjustment for us. We probably have over 100 of these buildings in the city, and I just cannot imagine trying to redo the design in a different way now - it would just completely screw up the entire city. And if that many people were forced to move... I cannot even begin to imagine the problems this would cause.

Within my city, I have zoned streets for Large, Medium, and Small houses on different streets, for asthetic purposes. I can't help the fact that most my citizens want to use med naboohouses. This creates walls because I have set the streets up, so that there is a unit street that the houses face, with no units between their footprints. To make it so my town isn't walled in everywhere,I do however have an street going vertically to the residental streets every 5 houses. I wouldn't think that this would be considered an expolit. I hope.

I however do agree that using these houses as walls to enclose/trap people in or out of areas should be an expolit. But I don't think that it would be right to ban individuals for it, Since it WAS allowed to be placed as such...

My suggestion, Trim the med naboo house on the sides, (or 1 side) so it doesn't reach the edge of footprint, or enlarge the footprint by 1 square. Both these ideas will be hard to implement because of so many houses already being used....

It's a tricky issue for the devs to deal with. I hope they can come to some decision that it fair.

Im my opinion the Medium Naboo is the ONLY house that looks good for making streets.

The Small Naboo (2 lot version) is passable, but the gaps betwen them are too large.

The large houses have an insane amount of open space around them.

I use houses to form streets, and create rows of them to obscure areas which are designated for factories. I prefer to hide the eye-sore factories from the street.

Forcing housed to all have gaps between them would remove any posibility of making nice streets.

Aesthetic use of these house styles should NOT be prevented. Taking away this ability would be akin to the stupid removal of the /citywarn instead of preventing cities overlapoping POIs in the first place.... an innapropriate solution to the wrong problem.

On Houses being used as walls

I'd really like to be able to use something simular on Tatooine to give our streets even more a "street" style ... but ... well ... we can't be as good (or bad) as the other planets

This Week in Kheraba

I've made exsesive use of the mail "citizen" function this week. Made my first big "This week in Kheraba" message to every citizen ... with the result of now having about everybody know in which street they're living, which house number they have, and how to advertise this on their house sign. Now when you ride through Kheraba you always know in which street you are because at both sides the house signes tell you in beautiful Kheraba blue.

Had yet another double maintenance bug this weekend ... but getting used to it. CSRs supervisor advised not to reimburse this time, although having our 12th unforseen update it's cost us roughly over 6.5 Million credits to date. On top of that my citizens seem to be very much less interested in their crafting profession as those of neighboring cities are ... a lot of our vendors on the marketplace are empty, sales tax are going down and are only bringing in about 2/3s of what maintenance costs. I hope to get the citizens interested into their businesses again.

We now have our /duel macro in place and are testing it ... thus having an interesting conflict between the militia and the "thugs" of the city. The city council will be reelected soon, so we're seeing a bit more action from them too

Have a very nice week

The Suntir/Riverlands Federation is to be forced to "persuade" a potential member city through invasion. Locations within each city are being given point values, and a large scale, multi-hour "capture the mayor and flags" scenario is in the final stages of planning.

Forces from both sides will be forced to defend AND attack, and the best group will be the ones to use their limited forces to probe for weakness and assault accordingly.

Soria continues to grow steadilly. Being a rebel city some imperial miscreants and troublemakers have loitered round it but for the most part it's business as usual.

Major change was to swap 4 major structures around ( Cantina, Guildhall, Medical centre and cloning ) in order to improve the flow of the city.

I havn't deliberatly used 'house walls' although 1 area is planned to be 100% meds and as Correlian houses to 'wall' that area will be walled. But only purely as an asthetic view. I try to keep roads and accessways clearly defined and walling med's makes this much easier. In fact I'd like the ability to drop walls to structure the roads better.

Nothing too new to report for Rauha this week (we don't have any official plans for the week, but it's only Monday yet).

As far as the medium house issue, we use it to form a couple of lanes of "row housing" so that someone walking down the lane will feel like there's a neighborhood of houses to the sides of them. However, our city is a mix of mediums, smalls (style 2 rounds) and larges, so we only did this in a few places in the town.

As far as using it as a wall, I kinda like the idea. Since we never got walls to place for cities, and walls are a central part of a lot of defenses, I don't see any reason not to have the ability to build walls out of anything available. Including houses.

Factional cities which uses their houses as walls to fortify their bases and structures should be applauded, not nerfed. There is never any reason to have main defensive emplacements out in the open, without any sort of cover, and medium house stacking provides this. As long as there is an access route to get to the base, anyone who is willing to try to get to the base to destroy it is given a fair chance. If they fail, they fail. If they succeed, they have won a great victory against amazing odds. How is that a bad thing?

There is a small bug with stacked mediums, however.Too many of them can cause the objects within them to not register as actually being inside them, when trying to move them around. They will move backwards just fine, rotate just fine, but when you try to move them forward, you get a message about them not being in the building.

I'm not a huge fan of stacked houses for aesthetic purposes (tract housing comes to mind, ghettos also), but for organization purposes and lane-building, it's great.

Howdy....

Nothing new this week to report from Villa Sura.

Regarding the Med houses hooked together....Heck ya we use em....Actually, we created a "condo" effect for asthetic purposes.....I have multiple streets that we have em on but they are not used for walling people in at all....If the Devs are considering removing this ability itwill totally ruin the look of my city...

Avian City had some undergoing work these last weeks, as we had to relocate a whole block to account for the placement of a marge garden in front of the cantina. Most houses being full of things, it was some worj but it's now done.

Reporting from Tal'Alderaan, Talus, Intrepid Server

Not much new to report. We may be approaching 70 citizens now, even with one or two leaving. My appeal to the populace to pay their taxes seems to have struck home - the city now has 1.4mil in the treasury, and we are financially secure for the time being. The players of the town are enthused about the progress we have made both in town and on our website by introducing forums. I personally continue to wish that the in game help features were more robust for new players, as answering SWG trivia for them has been sucking up a lot of my time.

As to the houses, I issued a statement early on that I personally viewed that type of housing placement as being outside of the intended use for those structures and requested that they not be placed in that manner. There wasn't a bit of complaint or discussion on this point, and to date no one has tried to place any medium generic houses in a way that they might obstruct the movement of visitors to our town.
